Clueless Don, I think they may be verses from the same Pepsi jingle--it did go on. Actually, the first four lines I quoted were the bridge. Some popular singer of the time--it might have been Eydie Gorme--sang it at least once. I was a kid then, and it still rattles in my head!

Subject: "Why dont you pick me up & smoke me sometime?"
From: Genie

The Muriel cigar commercial is coming back to me.
From googling it, I learned that it was Edie Adams who crooned the Muriel cigar jingles for 18 years. (I didn't know her name at the time I saw the commercials). One jingle was a parody of "Hey, Big Spender" from "Sweet Charity."

But the one I remember started out,
"I'm today's new muriel, the fine cigar
(something something something something something) by far.
(Can't recall the next line.)
"Why dontcha pick me up an' smoke me sometime."

But as I recall it, it was done as a voice over for a cartoon (female) cigar clad in a sort of "harem" outfit.

According to a post at this website this takeoff on Mae West was banned as too risqué for TV at the time.

As Jimmy Buffetts sings in the song "Pencil-thin Mustache,"

Here's the whole jingle:

"Bryllcreme,
a little dab'll do ya.
Use more only if you dare,
But watch out!
The gals will all pursue ya.
They love to run their fingers through your hair."

Thanks to this website http://www.able2know.com/forums/about42165-10.html

for jogging my memory of the rest of the jingle.

sixtieschick, your Pepsi jingle sounds like a follow-up version of the jingle that went

The modern crowd
today agrees
if you think young
say "Pepsi please!"
So pick the right one
the modern light one
now it's Pepsi ...
for those who think young.

sung to the tune of the old song "Makin' Whoopee".

(or maybe it was "So pick the light one, the modern right one" - memory fails me!)

When you say, 'Pepsi, please,'
You're putting yourself among
people who like their leisure
With Pepsi, the drink that's young.

So go ahead,
and say the drink
That lets you drink
As young as you think.
You've picked the right one,
The modern light one.
Now it's Pepsi,
For those who think young.

I used to drive my mother crazy when I was little by singing all the jingles for most every product while we were grocery shopping. A couple of years ago I was discussing jingles with my nephew, who was 32, and asked him some of his earliest jingle memories. He remembered one from when he was a toddler & cable TV was new, the Chicago Empire Carpet jingle:

five eight eight, two three hundred, Empiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiire.

Then he picked up the phone & called them. They were some financial company & get occasional calls from people all over the country who remember the jingle.

for the Hamms jingle & other beer jingles:
(sorry, couldn't get the blue clicky to work today)

a recording of old commercials:

for a piano midi of the Hamms tune,

                              wa-a-ters,
From the land of pines, lofty balsam,

Here's all I can recall of the 1950s commercial lyrics (from the very early days of TV).   I can clearly picture the cigar clad in a belly dancer type outfit, cooing in her best Mae West voice:

"Oh, I'm today's new Muriel, the fine cigar,
...
...
Why don't ya pick me up and (provocative pause) smoke me sometime?"

I suppose I could have looked it up on the 'net, but it's been one of those things I always thought would wake me at three in the morning with one of those 'eureka' things. Thanks, Beans!

You jogged my memory, and everything you posted is as I remember it (post-jog). But I'm pretty sure sometimes they did use the last line I posted
"Rheingold the dry-flavored beer!"

Could be they revised the jingle a bit over the years. It was the early 1950s when I used to hear that jingle (in NY and NJ).

My beer is Rheingold, the dry beer.
Think of Rheingold whenever you buy beer.

Won't you buy extra dry Rheingold Beer?

Up above (on 12 Feb 05), GUEST,chicky5 asked "What are the words to the Oreo jingle? :^{ ".

It is probably available on the net, but here is what I can remember off the top of my head:

Little girls have pretty curls
but I like Oreo.
Oreo's my favorite because
it's the very best cookie, ever was.
Girls are nice but, oh, what icing
comes with Oreos....

I think there is more, and I probably botched a word or two (for example, it might be "*boy*, what icing...").

And the place for me
Is the local public library.
They've got books and things
That they lend for free.
It's the latest, it's the greatest
It's the library.

There's a verse, too, but I can't rememrber it.

Re: The Spaniel

I stumbled across this thread (goodness knows if I'll ever find it again) and I do have the complete text for "The Spaniel". It's in "We're Still Using That Greasy MAD Stuff" (c)1959, 1963, E. C. Publications, Signet Q6499.

by Edgar, Al, & Moe

Once upon a midnight cautious, while I pondered weak and nauseous,
Over some advertising copy I had wrote for Macy's Store,
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a yapping,
As of someone loudly yapping, yapping at my office door.
"'Tis some client there," I muttered, "yapping at my office door -
    Only this and nothing more."

Then I felt my terror worsen, for my guest was not a person!
In there stepped a cocker spaniel; naturally I jumped in fear.
Tried to climb an oaken panel, ripping there my new grey flannel;
But the spaniel merely stood there, speaking out with voice so clear -
Speaking out like Jack Lescoulie, in a voice both loud and clear -
Quoth the spaniel- _"Drink Blatz Beer!"_

How I marveled this ungainly dog who did commercials plainly;
How he spoke the message clearly; selling points he underscored.
For I could not help agreeing that no living human being
Ever yet could mouth a slogan without sounding slightly bored -
Quoth the spaniel: _"Buy a Ford!"_

Thus this dog with voice like Murrow made my heavy brow unfurrow;
Thoughts of fortunes I could make now made me shake down to my knees.
But the spaniel set me grieving then by turning tail and leaving.
Naturally, I begged him tarry, crying out, "Stay with me, please!"
Quoth the spaniel, _"Eat Kraft Cheese!"_

ITV, mid-late 1950's: Coates Cider

"We all likes drinking cider
When we watch the tv show
'Cos Coates comes up from Somerset
Where the cider apples grow"

All sung in country-bumpkin West Country zummerzet voices. Come to think of it, haven't The Wurzels built their whole career on this?

Re: The Spaniel

I have the poem in a paperback Mad collection in my garage and was
hoping I wouldn't have to go dig it out. But since there are now TWO
people that want to read it (you and myself) I guess I'll have to
go get it. I think it starts out something like this:

Once upon a midnight cautious, while I pondered nearly nauseous
over some advertising copy I had wrote for Macy's store...

The spaniel also says "Buy a Ford".

Stay tuned.

This one is rather specific to the Washington DC area, around the mid to late 60's, I would say:

Eddie Leonard sandwich shops, you should try 'em
for the very best in sandwiches, just buy 'em
no matter where you are
you'll find that you're not far
from an Eddie Leonard sandwich shop

So take that short ride

you're never far from an Eddie Leonard sandwich shop

Nobody has mentioned the *other* Oscar Meyer jingle (which I remember through having recently learned a very bawdy parody):

My bologna has a first name:

It's O-S-C-A-R.

My bologna has a second name:

It's M-E-Y-E-R.

I love to eat it every day

And if you ask me why I'll say

That Oscar Meyer has a way

With B-O-L-O-G-N-A.

For some alcoholic beverage by a company called Martini & Rossi (I don't do mixed drinks, so don't know any more than that):

Martini & Rossi on the rocks

(repeat)

Say Ye-e-es!

For the United States Army:

Be all that you can be

In the Ar-rmy

There's lots more to it, but I can't remember it.

For Coca-Cola:

It's the real thing (Coke is)

In the back of your mind (Coca-Cola)

What you're hoping to find

Is the real thing

(Coke is)

Miller Beer (if you can call it "beer"):

When it's time to relax,

One beer stands clear. (beer after beer)

Well if you've got the time,

We've got the beer (Miller beer.)

And finally the creme de la creme. I could only remember the parody of this one...

McDonald's is your kind of place.

They serve you rattlesnakes,

French fries between your toes,

Hamburgers up your nose.

The last time that I was there

They served me underwear.

McDonald's is your kind of place.

...so I went out looking for it. Oh, the horror! Click the "View the famous 1966 commercial" link down near the bottom of the page.

McDonald's is our kind of place.

It's such a happy place.

Hap, hap, happy place

A clean and snappy place.

McDonald's is our kind of place.

It's such a happy place.

McDonald's is our kind of place.

[spoken] Your kind of place.

[voiceover with ad copy]

McDonald's is our kind of place.

It's such a happy place.

McDonald's is our kind of place.

[spoken] Your kind of place.

Oh my! It's even worse than I had thought. *LOL*

BB,

NightWing

"Louis the Fly" is still the base of their ads today...

Mortein's ad line used to be
"When You're on a good thing, stick to it" - and it was delivered vocally by John Laws - the logo was a dog going hell for leather while having his rear end stung...

Re. Freedomland.
you can download there commercial jingle(s)[audio!] from the web - don't have them in front of me now. I do remember one of them, only remember first line or so:
'Mommy and daddy take my hand
Take me out to Freedomland'

And, yes, was there once in life and indeed seemed to beat out Disney; you participated in the different themes. They also used to have entertainment for the 'parents' come nightime, maybe other times. Probably the first time my parents actually left me out of their sight.
Now, Co-op city stands there.

I'm Louis the Fly,
I'm Louis the Fly,
Straight from rubbish tip to you.
Spreading disease with the greatest of ease,
Straight from rubbish tip to you.
I'm bad and mean and mighty unclean
Afraid of no one
'Cept the man with the can of Mortein.
Hate that word Mortein.

One spray and Louis the fly,
Apple of his old mother's eye was Louis,
Poor dead Louis,
A victim of Mortein...Mooorteiin.

"Just one Cornetto - give it to me!
Delicious ice-cream from Italy!"

Most of the jingles I remember from the early seventies had been satirised to include our Headmaster and other notable school characters. But get MBSLynne on the subject of Louis the Fly or Masters Choc Milk...
