Cool rain today. What happened to "October's Bright Blue Weather" ?
I remember learning a poem with that title in 3rd grade, but can't remember it now, but I can still see in my minds eye those gorgeous days of my childhood. Can't complain about the rain, tho'. South Carolina is in need of rain, as we also have been experiencing drought for several years.

Yeah, it #$%&# SNOWED yesterday -- leaves not even finished turning colors yet, most of them still green. And of course, ON the trees where they caught the heavy gloppy stuff which caused no end of problems -- including yesterday morning's power failure, so I never got around to posting this yesterday. (By the way, Animaterra, here in Nottingham we only got about 2-3 inches.)

It's not even Hallowe'en yet, fer-pete's-sake!!!!

And when you consider our last snow was May 18th . . . and summer was too bloody hot and dry. (We've been losing the weather lottery this year.)

The sun came out before noon and melted it all where I was working (5 miles from home), but as I drove home there was more and more snow and our neighbors' yards were still white.

hey Fingerbuster; we've had VERY mild winters in Boston the last several years! (No snow whatsoever last year and only 3-4 days below 30 degrees). Unfortunately, it's being said we may get our missing snow this year. Yesterday morning was a mix of snow and rain; yucky! It made for bad roads and lots of accidents during rush hour. Then the sun came out in the afternoon and it was a picturesque autumn day. This week, temps in the 50s during the day and 30s at night. I have no heating oil and I guess I'd better rectify that. I'm only bothered when I am sitting around at night. The cats cluster on the bed. In the morning, here I sit comfortable at the computer eating breakfast wearing wool socks and a fleece pullover. Gosh, it's nice being a hearty lass. I hope to get caught up on my hiking this week. I was born on October 23rd and so this season is in my blood and I look forward to it every year...Despite the drought we do have some nice crisp reds in New England! I was out in the Berkshires two weekends ago and the colors were doing well. I was in England all last week and it rained! I did get to see apples on the trees in the Glastonbury orchards and that was magical...I took what I hope are good photographs on my vintage Pentax...the fields at the base of the Tor are mostly privately owned for grazing dairy cows and sheep. The old apple trees still bear gorgeous apples. I did not eat any; now I wonder why. But it was such a gift to SEE them!

In any case, I am always looking for ways to spend more time in the UK; is January good for you? ;)

We had a lovely snowfall yesterday- not the earliest on record for the region (southwest New Hampshire, USA) but it's been a long while. Thick flakes falling among red, yellow, and still-green leaves. Here we got about 5 inches! I live in what the weather reporters like to call "the higher elevations"- the snow lingers on and it's cold and ICY this morning! About 27 degrees F! The thaw is supposed to come this weekend.
In the words of Lou and Peter Berryman, "I don't mind the winter 'cept it's so long!" I could do with a bit more autumn! The fall foliage has just gone on and on and on this year!

In Östersund, Sweden it's 0 degrees Celcius (the freezing point); that should be 32 in Fahrenheit. We've got snow, 1 dm, that should be almost 4 inches if that's the unit of measurement you use... (there is a great converter on the net!) But one birch behind my house is still full of green leaves and the rowans (mountain ashes?) are full of rowanberries so there's a lot of colours despite the snow - quite beautiful! And the air feels still more fresh and clean when we've got snow, so I'm content but afraid that the snow will dissappear again as it's a bit too early for real winter.

37 degrees Celsius (99 in old money) yesterday.

A dust storm came through last night that reduced visibility to under a mile in places. The dust stretched from Mt Isa in North Queensland to Wollongong, south of Sydney - around 1500 miles. I haven't seen anything like it for nearly 20 years.

This should all build up to a good thunderstorm about Sunday. God knows we need it - most of Queensland (500,000 square miles) has been declared as drought stricken and large parts of the rest of Australia are the same.

It's MISERABLE in Scotland - about 6 degrees Centigrade, chucking it down with rain and 50 mph winds. There is some serious flooding in the Border area and there's a severe weather warning out for North-East area tonight - gales and floods expected.

I've enjoyed the several threads we've had on weather over the past year and a half. But it's probably because I am a bit of a weather nut, er, enthusiast. I was raised, and still reside, in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada. My old man started taking me hunting and fishing when I was nine and he taught me what he had learned about weather forecasting from gramps. Gramps and Gramma were raised in the bog country of Kent County where being able to forecast weather, both short and long term, was a part of survival.... if you planted too early or too late, your seed was wasted. If you went trout fishing on a southwest wind, you wasted a day better spent weeding. If you got drunk with the lads down the river, stormy weather could sock in for days.... he learned that from Gramma.

Anyway, overnights are around zeroC and days are between 5 and 15C. I was up Kent County last week and there was a Blue Arse Fly hatch on a warm rain with a warm south wind. Visibility was two hundred metres and the little buggers are only the size of a match head. This was followed within hours by a Ladybug hatch, which voraciously feed on the flies and then migrate south. I had at least three hundred Ladybug's on the front of my hunter's orange vest at one time.

We'll have two more warm south rains for the remaining hatches of moths and butterflies and other such creatures. These hatches will feed the larger birds (that don't migrate, like grouse) during the period where the leaves of ground cover and poplar trees and the like are not fit to eat but the seeds and nuts are not yet ready for consumption. As well, carnivorous migratory birds and bats are feeding on these hatches in order to fatten up for the long flight south, which will begin by soaring high on the thermals created when the last warm south wind rises and pulls in cold air from the north. When these guys leave, it's time to barn the sheep at least an hour before dark every day and keep a shotgun by the door. I'd better stop before I get toooo out of control with my jawin.

Human contact ? Unfortunately, yes. When I'm up in Kent County these days, I have to put up with the fact that a new neighbour moved in two years ago and he's far too close at 1.5k. Used to be, my nearest neighbour was about 5k away.... gettin too crowded for me. People talk too much.

Down here in Floribama we've actually had a couple of days with no rain. First it was Tropical Storm Hanna, then Tropical Storm Isidore, then Hurricane Lili. None of them came close, but between them and a frontal system or two the rain had been non-stop for over a month. It's good to see the sun again. And the temperatures have dropped enough to turn off the air conditioner. Hopefully it'll stay off until mid-June.

And, mmm1a, I'm sure your son is a great kid, but you should probably try to get him some counselling for this trombone thing. There's gotta be something wrong with anyone who would want to play an instrument that has spit-valve. And, then, to freeze his lips off marching in freezing weather? Definite sign of masochistic tendencies. Get help before it's too late.

The weather here is unseasonably cold. There's S in the forecast for Wed. The weather has gone berserk ever since Inauguration Day (Nature abhors a vacuum) We went through five cords of wood last year; not because of extreme cold, but persistant lower temperatures through May. This year is looking no better. It's not usually this cold till mid November.

it's fucking cruel for there to be bright sun, green and red leaves and a temperature of 12 degrees above freezing!

The report from Nottingham, New Hampshire is that it's finally turned seasonably cold (and us without firewood yet). Had our first frost early last week. The trees are just starting to turn colors -- still lots of green. Foliage probably won't be that great this year because of this summer's drought -- colors will be "dusty" looking. Still have deep purple petunias blooming on the deck, but the still blooming nasturtiums got zapped by the frost.

Oh, and it's windy.

mmm1a: the best solution I found when I was playing trombone in the marching band was to hold the mouthpiece in my hand when I wasn't actually playing. Our band wore white cotton gloves in uniform, so holding the cold instrument wasn't a problem (don't go there, Spaw!). If the band doesn't wear gloves, you might try rigging up a leather cover over the tubing and slide where the hands hold them. Some soft buckskin laced on would do nicely.

It's chilly with a clear, sunny sky here in Shepherdstown, West Virginia (USA). It was cold and wet at the Getaway in Darlington, Maryland (USA) Friday and Saturday. We're packing my stuff for the move to Columbus, Georgia (USA) right now. I anticipate that it will be sunny and warm (70 to 80 degrees, F) when we get to Georgia. If we're lucky, we won't have to use the air conditioner any more this year.

We are heading for summer - how do I know? - we've had our first bushfires! The weather is getting warmer - I'm starting to avoid the sun, & have had the fan going again. The humidity hasn't arrived yet (thank you weather gods). My beautiful Hoya has started to flower. The shops are filling with Christmas stuff. Students are sitting their final exams (our school year ends in Dec).

Looks like it will be another nasty fire season around here as a large part of the state has been Drought-declared for months. Not only is the bush dry, but arsonists are out, too. Houses were burnt out on Sydney's southern outskirts last week, in a fire probably caused accidently by workers repairing water pipes. However the fires to the north that killed one man & destroyed more houses were probably deliberately lit.

Its on the chilly side. No snow yet (thank goodness), days are still sunny but the nites are getting colder. Anyone else notice the leaves don't seem to have the color change that they usually have? Maybe its just this area , but there isn't the bright colors of fall. WE are going to have our anual fall celebration next week and I hope the weather warms up a little bit. Alot of the activities are at night ,
parade next monday, it can be freezing watching it , let alone walking in it. I'll have 2 kids in the parade this year , my son is marching with the middle school band and my daughter is riding on the girl scout float..This year my son is not as excited about marching. He plays the trombone and not only does it get a little heavy but the metal gets down right cold . :) Any ideas on how to keep a trombone warm ? I'm sure he would apppreciate any tips.
