The Guest of 09 May 20 - 09:22 AM means to say "It is the wife who is 'all' yearning for her husband, rather than 'everyone' for her." Absolutely correct. The punchline in both verses is "The beautiful wife" – nominative case, i.e. she is the one who is yearning and then crying.

If my equally fallible language proficiency serves me, the last five lines may translate:
Johnny's head rolled down forcefully;
when his wife learned about that, she cried.

Dear brothers, stand firm for the people's right!

It's a common theme in songs about soldiering of women and loved ones left behind. How is the wife weak?

It's the Wife who is weak.

"Vso toskuet" means "the wife is constantly longing"

I found this thread while searching for these lyrics, a mere 15 years later. In the comments of a Russian-language YouTube posting of the song, I also found the lyrics, which I am pasting here, if anyone is still interested, along with my minor (and fallible) revisions to Google's (at least equally fallible) translation. But I have not yet been able to find the re-written lyrics from the musically identical "Sailors' Chorus" from the 1965 film "The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming!" If anyone can direct me to those, please do.

"Soldiers' Chorus" from the opera "Decembrists"
Хор солдат из оперы "Декабристы"
(Khor soldat iz opery "Dekabristy")
by Yuri Shaporin

Beyond the Danube, beyond the Danube
Beyond the Danube, beyond the river
We hiked on foot, marching
On the Turkish troops!
Hey! In the saddle,
In the green, in the garden!
Everyone yearning, each one yearning,
for his beautiful wife.

Beyond the Danube, beyond the Danube
Beyond the Danube, beyond the river
The sabers of the hills, the sabers of the hills,
The swords shine brightly.
Hey! Charging down the hill
Vanya leading the storm!
How did she know, sobbing,
His beautiful wife.

Children! Hold fast!
For the truth of the people!

I have an LP on which the Soviet Army Chorus sings it, but my Russian is too poor for me to extract any words. I'll be happy to send you a tape in case you want to try.

I finally got into Volkslieder and got it translated; neither of your requests are there. Sorry. Found lots of CDs

I would also love lyrics to this piece by Shaporin, from his renowned opera called the "Decembrists"
