Subject: RE: What's playing now? From: Jon W. Date: 15 Jun 98 - 10:58 AM OOOPs, inadvertent click there. I meant to recommend to Roger, Woody Mann's guitar tablature book of Robert Johnson (I think it's called "The Complete Robert Johnson") as an excellent start to learning RJ's tunes. Jon W. |
Subject: RE: What's playing now? From: Will Date: 15 Jun 98 - 10:20 PM Ah, such fine stacks of music that people listen to. Just back from Pittsburgh with a treasure trove from Dave's Dungeon on 4th (or some such, I was paying more attention to the music than the name). I've got Jez Lowe's Tenterhooks playing, with the Who (Face Dances), Tannahill Weavers, DiFranco (Not so soft), the Farina's, Buffy Sainte Marie (Coincidence), the Rankins (North Country), Patti Smith (Waves), and Pete Townsend (PsycoDerilict) lined up. I'm not sure I'll get to bed tonight! |
Subject: RE: What's playing now? From: Pauline Lerner Date: 16 Jun 98 - 12:17 AM Here's something different. I'm now listening to "J.S. Bach, Sonates pour Flute." Is someone keeping tabs on the responses? A statistical analysis would be interesting. We could sort by performer, composer, genre, input (many CDs and a few LPs), day of the week, etc. Pauline |

Subject: RE: What's playing now? From: Jon W. Date: 16 Jun 98 - 03:27 PM Just got back from a lunchtime concert by a local Celtic band, Shanahy. Nice stuff on fiddle, guitar, mandolin, hammered dulcimer, whistle, pipes (possibly Scottish smallpipes?), bohran. Nice Celtic weather, also - cloudy, breezy, cold, threatening rain. Next up: a tape of Tenpenny, another local band that plays Irish/Celtic trad music. |
Subject: RE: What's playing now? From: Dave Schipper Date: 16 Jun 98 - 10:37 PM First thanks everyone, my list of music to buy has grown, I completely forgot about James Keelagan. The Grace Family cover his mine song, and it's one of my favorite. I went to put on Outright Bold Face Lies, but ended up with "That's the Ticket" We should start a thread of the singing takes me back... Whenever I hear the record I go back to the North Country Folk Festival in Ironwood. A short lived but awesome festival. Camping on Little Girls Point in July in a tent with temperatures in the 40's and Lake Superior churning iron red. But Art, why did you perform the Craig Johnson songs backwards on the record? |

Subject: RE: What's playing now? From: Rockaday Johnnie Date: 17 Jun 98 - 11:48 AM Hey -Dave You're right --I think there's some political things going on when you play that Art Thieme Folk Legacy Lp backwards..I hear Art singing "I Love Disco" over and over. |
Subject: RE: What's playing now? From: Bill D Date: 18 Jun 98 - 10:35 AM aldus...great choices...we may not spell the same, but we sure could trade music! You have inspired me- I have several Frankie Armstrong albums and 2 Delores Keane that have not been played in ages..gonna get them out today. (no...haven't seen that Topic on CD yet) I still remember with awe the one opportunity I had to see and hear Frankies Armstrong live...what power and feeling!! |
Subject: RE: What's playing now? From: Frank Maher Date: 18 Jun 98 - 10:45 AM Right now I'm listening to a CD of Frank Quinn "If You are Irish" Old Irish American Music & Song of the 1920s & 30s Great Old Stuff. |
Subject: RE: What's playing now? From: Dave Schipper Date: 18 Jun 98 - 10:41 PM While I meant that he recorded the two songs backwards, it was supposed to be Soo Line first and then the Keewanaw, but now that you mentioned it, I always thought I heard "rubber ducky you're the one" if I played his banjo tunes backward. |
Subject: RE: What's playing now? From: Bojangles Date: 18 Jun 98 - 11:52 PM I am listening to: Doug Geeting "Between Flights" Unplugged and Grounded Acoustic Guitar Doug is an Alaska bush pilot who has obiously put in many long hours working out the intricacies of the picking of Mississippi John Hurt. Doug does his fine picking and singing between flights to Mt. McKinley and other targets near Talkeeta. Since he flew me onto McKinley and we later played at the Fairview Inn 'til the wee hours, I have listened to his CD many times in the past three years. It hasn't begun to go stale on me. His address: Doug, PO Box 42, Talkeetna, Ak 99676 |
Subject: RE: What's playing now? From: Will Date: 19 Jun 98 - 03:29 PM Yes, Frankie Armstrong is wonderful in person. I recall seeing her at the Vancouver Folk Festival about 15 years ago, doing a workshop of Brecht and Weill songs with Dave van Ronk. Truly wonderful. |
Subject: RE: What's playing now? From: Big Mick Date: 19 Jun 98 - 09:46 PM I love this thread!! I am listening to "Beaver Island House Party" just now. Then some Doc Watson or Leo Kottke's "Standing in My Shoes". |
Subject: RE: What's playing now? From: Barbara Date: 21 Jun 98 - 04:59 PM Hey Will, I was there too, do you remember Frankie and Martin Carthy and the WAtersons and, I think, Leon Rosselson and Roy Bailey all singing Azekatarle on one of the small stages? Or the bellydancer at the party the first night? One of the friends I went with worked the festival and his job was to keep Dave vR supplied with boose, way he tells it he didn't see much of the festival.... Also have an indelible memory of Frankie striding out to the end of the floating dock at Sweetsmill and jumping off into the lake, by herself. Thought to myself that I'd like to have that much courage if I were blind... Blessings, Barbara |
Subject: RE: What's playing now? From: kiwi@unagi.cybernothing.org Date: 22 Jun 98 - 11:07 AM At the moment I'm listening to a King's Singers album .. they do all-vocal arrangements of everything under the sun, from madrigals to jazz to pop to sacred.. the song I'm on right now is "Fifty Ways To Leave Your Lover" by Paul Simon. The song right after is my favorite of the album, "That Lonesome Road" by James Taylor and John Groinick. And by the way, anyone know where I can find an original Taylor version of that? Sla/n, Kiwi |
Subject: RE: What's playing now? From: Alice Date: 23 Jun 98 - 01:28 AM my son's current favorite tape, the Beatles, Sgt. Pepper's... we listened to it in the car, singing loudly (he is 10, and he's into Batman and the Beatles) |
Subject: RE: What's playing now? From: Frank Maher Date: 23 Jun 98 - 11:18 AM Right now I'm listening to a CD of the Flanagan Brothers.Old Irish Music from the 1920s.Really Dynamic Stuff!!!!!! |
Subject: RE: What's playing now? From: Earl Date: 23 Jun 98 - 11:56 AM Alice, There may be a trend starting here. Our 11 year old has confiscated our Sgt. Pepper CD and, at his urging, we just bought a CD copy of the White Album. |
Subject: RE: What's playing now? From: Jon W. Date: 23 Jun 98 - 01:09 PM Wow. On our Scout campout last weekend, I had a 12-year old ask if I had any Beatles tapes to listen to as we were driving (unfortunately I didn't). |
Subject: RE: What's playing now? From: kiwi Date: 23 Jun 98 - 06:11 PM Earl, Alice, Jon, I think there IS a trend starting. :) My chamber choir sang a couple Beatles songs this past scholastic year, and I promptly confiscated all my parents' Beatles vinyls and have them stashed in my room next to my turntable. :) Sla/n, Kiwi |
Subject: RE: What's playing now? From: Alice Date: 23 Jun 98 - 06:22 PM My son just told me that The Beatles were the best band ever, because they knew how to make all those really cool songs. I agree. Unique classics that will stand the test of time for generations to come. alice |
Subject: RE: What's playing now? From: Barbara Date: 23 Jun 98 - 06:30 PM Well, the good news is my ll year old daughter not only listens to the Beatles a lot now, but also has for about 5 years, and loves them. The bad news is she also swiped my Dazed and Confused CD with oh, such wonderful groups on it as Alice Cooper, Foghat, Lyrnyd Skyrnrd and Black Sabbath. Hey, what can I say? I wanted some DANCE music, and now she's checked out the video of it which is full of casual kid cruelty (to each other), drugs and **** words. But yes, the early Beatles in particular seem to be very popular with the young teen set today. She's got my anniversary compilation Beatles CDs in her room and I have to keep asking for them back. And since we don't have TV, she's still only getting a miniscule dose compared to what most kids get. I don't like it, but I think she's got a right to know about this stuff. Blessings, Barbara |
Subject: RE: What's playing now? From: Will Date: 23 Jun 98 - 11:28 PM Barbara, yes, I remember Roy Bailey and Leon Rosselsohn as part of a small-stage workshop with Armstrong. Bailey's voice was especially powerful. I also recall thinking that Dave Van R was well into his cups, especially by the time of the main stage show that night -- your friend did his job well. (Out of curiousity, who was your friend? I used to know a few of the people who hung around the the Folk Festival crowd). |
Subject: RE: What's playing now? From: Will Date: 23 Jun 98 - 11:50 PM Just dug out my "Songs of Bertolt Brecht" tape, which is playing now. Armstrong and Van Ronk singing (separately), with Rosselson also playing on Armstrong's songs. They recorded it in Vancouver, I think originally produced by Festival Records. Great straight-forward singing and basic accompaniment. Armstrong and Van Ronk's voices and styles suit Brecht. Van Ronk: " ... and if someone gets kicked, that will be you." Armstrong: "...my son, if you think I brought you into the world so painfully to have you lie under it so meekly and ask for more ..." Van Ronk's version of Mack the Knife doesn't sound much like Bobby Darrin, or whoever it was did the top-40 version in the 60s. |
Subject: RE: What's playing now? From: Dan Keding Date: 24 Jun 98 - 11:56 PM Right now I have Nic Jones on the cd player, the album Penguin Eggs. Great playing & singing. Dave Schipper, I remember the days of the North Country Folk Festival well. I played there twice wqith my ex partner Roxannne. It was truly a wonderful experience and great people. |
Subject: RE: What's playing now? From: Dave Schipper Date: 25 Jun 98 - 11:29 PM Dan, Thanks for the note, I definitely remember you & Roxanne. We were from Manitowoc at the time and saw you there a few times. Seeing your name reminded once I put together a challenge cassette theme tape for 45 minutes of music on fruits and vegetables. The woman I gave it to had a blast, everything from Vegematic, to Strawberry Fields, but I did slip in Oats and Beans... Beans are a vegetable aren't they? I recounted more of North Country in what's become a forgotten thread called "the tellin' takes me home" |

Subject: RE: What's playing now? From: Dave Schipper Date: 26 Jun 98 - 10:56 PM Johnnie, this will definitely date the festival to say I taped a few of the concerts from a Wisconsin Public Radio re-broadcast on an 8 Track. Complete with the hiss and whirl and pop as it changed from one track to another. Thanks for the reminder on Spider John, he's playing now. |

Subject: RE: What's playing now? From: Art Thieme Date: 30 Jun 98 - 09:34 PM Right now Mary McCaslin WAY OUT WEST LP is on. Never tire of it.Mary is the best. Mick, It'd be great to get together...problem is I can't pick any longer--walk either. That's why Mudcat has become important to me; I can be with the music and the musicians and all my old road pals vicariously.(E-mail too) I had never touched a computer before January '98. Would love to be with Phil Kucera & Horse & Frank Youngman & Jay Stielstra watching the bears eat rancid bacon by headlamps in the dump at Copper Harbor...I sure do miss the hangin' out. Yeah, the more things change, the more they get different!! Art |
Subject: RE: What's playing now? From: Nora Date: 30 Jun 98 - 11:51 PM Van Morrison is on now. It's hot here in North Carolina, and I've been contradancing like crazy. Grand Marais must be so lovely right now. I sure miss that big lake. I believe it was Spider John Koerner, tending the bar at the Triangle on the West Bank in Minneapolis, who served me my first Black and Tan. Bless his heart. Nora |
Subject: RE: What's playing now? From: Craig Date: 01 Jul 98 - 12:39 AM I had been listening to Ranma 1/2 Best Collection. Beginning and ending music for Japanese animation, but now you've put me in the mood for some Phil Ochs. Thanks. Craig |

I remember her from another day,
But we swam without our clothes in Lake Superior's waters,
Eventually she got married to a jackpine savage,
Can she bake a cherry pie, Billy boy, Billy boy,
But she never skinny dips or drinks wine from a bottle, Art |

Or are ya faking? ;-) I've lost track of Jay Stielstra! But I'll check with Craig Johnson & see what he knows! Subject: RE: What's playing now? From: Kiwi Date: 01 Jul 98 - 09:32 PM Spider John Koerner tends bar too?!? Wow.. who knew! I thought he was exclusively a musician (fishes for her Koerner tape). Of course, that could be because the only reference I have to him is Spider Robinson's books, which mention the very album that I then went out and found via a friend of mine... Slán, Kiwi |
Subject: RE: What's playing now? From: Big Mick Date: 07 Jul 98 - 10:34 PM Art, I have been offline for a couple of weeks due to working so %#$@#$*&%^&^% much. Sorry I wasn't aware of your circumstance. It reminded me of how blessed I am to be able to share the music. If I can figure out where you are, I will see to it that we stop by some time when we are in Wisconsin (?) and share the music. In fact, we ought to get all the Mudcatters to come up and have a picnic and do a little pickin and grinnin. (WADDYA THINK, FOLKS?) Gawd, it's been years since I have been to the dump in Newberry and seen those trash eatin bears. Come to think of it, I have been described as a trash eatin bear from time to time. Just now I am listening to Pat Broaders of Moore and Broaders play the Uillean Pipes. I love that instrument. Mick |
