Subject: Hi everyone From: Mr Furrow Date: 01 Nov 02 - 08:18 AM I'm a newbie here and "tripped over" the site via our MP3.com presence. We are Straight Furrow, originally a barndance band and now doing some recording of new and original material too. It's mostly in the Celtic genre. On the offchance that there's anyone reading who hails from Norfolk in England, we've got a public gig (a barndance)on 9th November at Woodnorton Village hall - that international centre of culture with which I'm sure you're all familiar. Anyway, if you feel inclined, you can sample our wares at www.mp3.com/straight_furrow or take a peep at our own site at www.straightfurrow.co.uk Hope to talk to some of you soon. Cheers Jon |
Subject: RE: Hi everyone From: jeffp Date: 01 Nov 02 - 08:21 AM Hi, yourself! I can't come hear you as I'm on the wrong side of the pond, but many others will be here to welcome you to the Mudcat I'm sure. Lots of information and fun here, so stick around and join in. jeffp |

Subject: RE: Hi everyone From: songs2play Date: 01 Nov 02 - 08:28 AM Welcome with open Arms If you go to the top right hand side of this page, and use the drop down box for "Members Photos and Info", then go to "Location", hopefully you will find a memeber in your viscinity. It's a starting point. Welcome again. |
Subject: RE: Hi everyone From: greg stephens Date: 01 Nov 02 - 08:29 AM Mr Furrow you're very welcome to our kindly friendly world. A word of advice: you use the phrase "Celtic genre". Never, ever, start a discussion using this phrase on Mudcat. You won't know what hit you!! Sorry can't come to your gig, a bit far away. |
Subject: RE: Hi everyone From: Mr Furrow Date: 01 Nov 02 - 08:40 AM Yeah Greg, that whole "genre" thing is a real minefield just about everywhere :) I tend to use it just as a staring point so people will know we're not into sea shanties or whatever. We've been playing together for about 12 years and never gave a thought to genre until we started posting some songs on MP3.com and they force you into specifying. Also we were lucky enough to get taken up by a publishing company and they're REALLY genre-conscious. I suppose that's because they're commercially driven and get over sensitive to these things. Ho-hum, we just play the stuff we like and hope for the best. Jon |
Subject: RE: Hi everyone From: Pied Piper Date: 01 Nov 02 - 08:46 AM Hi Mr Furrow. Welcome a board the ship of fools. Lots of UK Mudcaters here. I'm based in Eccles Manchester, but north of you in Hull it's Crawling with em, as you'll find out. Greg's right about the "Celtic" thing; just start a thread called something like "What have the Celts ever done for us" and you'll see. Hell I'll do it just to give you an intro to this place. All the best PP. |
Subject: RE: Hi everyone From: Mr Furrow Date: 01 Nov 02 - 08:50 AM Hi Mr Piper I shall stand well back and watch your thread with interest :) I'm a recorder/flute player so, like you, I moonlight in the rat removal business LOL. Cheers Jon |
Subject: RE: Hi everyone From: kendall Date: 01 Nov 02 - 08:53 AM The rat removal business? Come on over, Washington is crawling with them! Welcome aboard Mate. |
Subject: RE: Hi everyone From: MMario Date: 01 Nov 02 - 08:59 AM Jon - skip the genre discussion and go for "What is folk?" - after you recover from the incineration you'll feel like you've been here forever! (JOKE!) Welcome - hope you enjoy your stay |
Subject: RE: Hi everyone From: Mr Furrow Date: 01 Nov 02 - 09:00 AM Hi Kendall If I do, you'd best be sure to pay the bill or I spirit all the kiddies away in the night! Actually, come to think of it, maybe that's why so few people pay me? Hmmmmmmmm. :o) Jon |

Subject: RE: Hi everyone From: Mr Furrow Date: 01 Nov 02 - 09:10 AM Mario You're quite right of course. Perhaps I should start that thread, I've always wanted a clear-cut, well-defined and unversally acceptable definition of folk music. Do think I'd get one? Yours with a wistful shake of the head Jon |
Subject: RE: Hi everyone From: Declan Date: 01 Nov 02 - 09:14 AM No but if you're not sure how to spell the word Horse you could start one up and wait for the famous quote from Big Bill Broonzy, or was it Leadbelly or Louis Armstrong or ... |
Subject: RE: Hi everyone From: Mr Furrow Date: 01 Nov 02 - 09:15 AM Declan Are you sure you're not thinking of the Beatles? |
Subject: RE: Hi everyone From: Bullfrog Jones Date: 01 Nov 02 - 09:15 AM Yeah Greg, that whole "genre" thing is a real minefield just about everywhere :) I tend to use it just as a staring point Maybe it's the staring that causes the furrow? Welcome again! BJ |
Subject: RE: Hi everyone From: Mr Furrow Date: 01 Nov 02 - 09:18 AM Hi Bullfrog Yeah, typing huh? You'd think with the number of keystrokes I make at least a few of 'em would end up in the right place :o( Jon |
Subject: RE: Hi everyone From: rock chick Date: 01 Nov 02 - 09:26 AM All these numbers~: not very good with foreign languages other than British Sign langauage, but nice to have you here, ad infinitum - beat that Declan!! |

Subject: RE: Hi everyone From: SharonA Date: 01 Nov 02 - 09:38 AM Welcome (just 1!) from across the pond in Pennsylvania, home of Mudcat (which explains why all posts are dated according to US Eastern time)! Guess I'll have to wait for Straight Furrow's US tour (or the CD) to hear your music. Enjoy the Cat! Sharon |
Subject: RE: Hi everyone From: Mr Furrow Date: 01 Nov 02 - 09:47 AM Hi Sharon Thanks for the welcome. Just in case we don't manage a US tour this year (in our dreams!) take a listen to us HERE Cheers Jon |

Subject: RE: Hi everyone From: Amos Date: 01 Nov 02 - 10:00 AM Hi, Mister Furrow, and welcome to the 'Cat -- whacked out, but warm and usually harmless. Always glad to see a new face -- even a taciturn one! A |

Subject: RE: Hi everyone From: GUEST,Glenda at work Date: 01 Nov 02 - 10:20 AM Hi,Jon. I welcome you to Mudcat. I am the wife of "53" and he is a man of few words. Actually I found the cat and signed up as 53, the year I was born. As time went on it reached a point that Bob was posting more than I so now people understand that he is "53". Sometimes I post as 53 but am careful to state that it is I doing the posting, sometimes with only a little "g". Bob is a guitarist and is teaching me to play. Tell us about all the instuments you play. Oh, we live in the US, in South Carolina, near Myrtle Beach. g |
Subject: RE: Hi everyone From: GUEST,Glenda at work Date: 01 Nov 02 - 10:25 AM NO! I didn't mean I signed up at the 'Cat the year I was born, I meant 53 was the year I was born!! Oh, how easy it is to say the wrong things when one types quickly. Glenda |
Subject: RE: Hi everyone From: SharonA Date: 01 Nov 02 - 10:29 AM Hi again, Jon Furrow! :^) Sorry, but if the music is not in MIDI format, I can't get my Macintosh computer to play it. Maybe someday I'll have time to figure out why, but not today! Catch you later, Sharon |
Subject: RE: Hi everyone From: Mr Furrow Date: 01 Nov 02 - 10:30 AM Hi Glenda Sorry to hear you are at work :o) I'm avoiding it today and sitting here chatting instead. We're a 3 piece band and I'm mostly heard on soprano recorder and transverse flute but there's evidence of my alleged mandolin playing on a few of our recorded tracks. In our live sets I play some guitar too. Brian plays guitar, mandolin, lute, violin and harmonica and he writes the original material (songs and instrumentals) which we mix in with the traditional stuff. Susan plays keyboards, bass, melodeon and recorders with the band and is our dance caller too. Susan and I are partners and Brian is one of our oldest and closest friends so gigging and recording are just like really intense social events for us. All the best to you & 53 |
Subject: RE: Hi everyone From: Alice Date: 01 Nov 02 - 10:42 AM Jon "Furrow", what exactly was it on mp3.com that led you to Mudcat? Alice |
Subject: RE: Hi everyone From: GUEST Date: 01 Nov 02 - 11:01 AM Thank you Jon. You should also check out the chat room and send in your pix to the Photos and Info section!! Bob likes the chat room, but alas, even there he is very brief in his comments. g |
