Subject: New Club in HULL From: GeoffLawes Date: 02 Nov 02 - 06:05 AM Weekly - Thursdays - upstairs in the Bull, Beverley Road, Hull. I need performers who will phone me NOW and say 'yes I will do a spot on the opening night.' I'd like to start on THURSDAY 14 NOVEMBER but so far I haven't got enough singers and musicians who are able to commit themselves to this date. If the first night isn't interesting, varied and lively people won't come back again. It will be a mixed, traditional and contemporary club and will include music hall, recitation, parody, story telling and self composed song, among other things. If you think a club like this is a good idea ring me NOW on 01482 443713 and book a spot because it won't happen if everyone waits to see what it is like first! |

Subject: RE: New Club in HULL From: Leadfingers Date: 02 Nov 02 - 09:02 AM Good luck Geoff.Shame it so far away-it sounds like the sort of club I go to on Thursdays already |
Subject: RE: New Club in HULL From: KJ Date: 02 Nov 02 - 02:13 PM Come on guys. It's hard to believe a city the size of Hull does not have a folk club, especially as it is an area well-known for the quality of it's musicians. Let's support this. We,ve already been in touch with Geoff & he says so far we're the only one's that have responded!!! |
Subject: RE: New Club in HULL From: brid widder Date: 02 Nov 02 - 02:49 PM I have too! and it's just minutes from my house!! near enough to crawl home! |
Subject: RE: New Club in HULL From: GUEST,kj Date: 02 Nov 02 - 04:25 PM What more can you ask for, a folk club within crawling distance. Heaven!! |
Subject: RE: New Club in HULL From: Les from Hull Date: 02 Nov 02 - 05:57 PM Maggie and I have both spoken to Geoff on the phone and we'll do what we can to support the club. |

Subject: RE: New Club in HULL From: Tweed Date: 02 Nov 02 - 07:33 PM All this Hull talk put me on a search and I found a pic of "The Bull", here. Looks like a good place to make some music to me. Hull seems to be loaded with pubs, according to the city's website. Amazing there's no folkclubs in a town with two Universities. Good luck with it! |
Subject: RE: New Club in HULL From: Abuwood Date: 03 Nov 02 - 04:23 AM Good Luck Geoff hope it comes off but I am afriad I will not be "at home by the wide muddy Humber' on that day. |

Subject: RE: New Club in HULL From: breezy Date: 03 Nov 02 - 04:42 AM Geoff you'll be O'K if you have a following to see you perform for 3 hours or if you gamble and book a known artist. It took me 4 years before I opened a folk club in my home town. If you are operating alone you have to be able to do it all and you can only rely upon your own resources and skills. Someone I know thinks you can start a club from nothing, only his booked artistes appear, I was one of 2 punters.I have my doubts about it going anywhere and its costing him a bundle as well. Start a singaround and have everyone put in a £1, do this weekly , build a fund then invest it in booking a quality name , charge more on the night and go from there. You could look into applying for grants, I havent as I wanted the venture to become self financing Last Friday we had a full house for Roy Bailey. So ,If you cant perform for a whole evening then start by finding someone who can and who would like to become enrap'n'r'l Good luck, but its not the best time to start as Christmas is fast approaching, I close on 29th Nov and re-open 25th Jan I'll watch this space |
Subject: RE: New Club in HULL From: brid widder Date: 03 Nov 02 - 04:43 AM there's a story ... of a press gang trying to 'persuade' a patron of the Bull to join them.... apparently they were seen off by farm girls with pitch forks working in the fields over the road....for anyone familiar with the pub today this is hard to imagine but it is apparently true. |
Subject: RE: New Club in HULL From: KJ Date: 03 Nov 02 - 12:23 PM It's good advice from Breezy but as struggling performers can he tell us how to become 'known artists'? For years we've gone to singer's nights & gone down well, our CD has recieved really good reviews, we've done local radio spots, we've done folk festival's for tickets only & got the graveyard spots but have been appreciated by the audience & when folk club organiser's take a chance & book us we go down well, but on most bookings the audience turnout is paltry because we're not 'famous' well known performers.HELP!!!!! |

Subject: RE: New Club in HULL From: John MacKenzie Date: 03 Nov 02 - 12:58 PM This I'm afraid is the malaise that affects most Folk Clubs now. The big names make their money doing festivals, and concerts. they get used to the big venue payments and the free accomodation. Not that I blame them for that, I think we'd all like to get gigs like that, as and when we need the money. I think that what I'm saying is that there are too many festivals, the audience get a great mix of great names, and all on one site. I think they become blase [how do you do accents?], and can't be arsed to turn out for a good evening at a local pub that some poor bastard's worked his arse off getting going, and he's probably subsidising it too. As you can see though, I don't know the answer, wish I did. Inverness, my local "big city" doesn't even have a club anymore, and they have the cheek to call themselves "The capital of highland culture" BALLS. Rant rant.....Giok |

Subject: RE: New Club in HULL From: smallpiper Date: 03 Nov 02 - 08:04 PM Hull used to have folk clubs in fact it was the folk club t the Blue Bell in hull that started off the Whitby Folk festival. I will talk to the boys and girls and see if we can arrange a trip - thursday nights are not easy - and will call to let you know - providing pipes are welcome of course |

Subject: RE: New Club in HULL From: breezy Date: 03 Nov 02 - 08:18 PM Kj send me details via p.m. A few thoughts run your own club Build up a local following by obtaining a pub residency on a weekly basis, how? , go in and ask for a one off gig to run through your numbers for a forth coming gig and dont ask for any money just drinks If they say they want you back ask them to make you an offer, then go and think about it.If at first you dont succed try elsewhere. If after 5 attempts you get nowhere then reconsider and re-appraise what youre offering., Make yourselves economically viable for a club. Get your name seen, have I missed it? Offer to play for a door percentage like Show of Hands you cannot demand a fee until youre in demand at my club I book BIG names, I must have quality or no-one will come thru the door, but I intersperse with lesser known names from anywhere and everywhere as long as they are up to standard as my judgment and reputation are now at stake. Offer to play support for free at BIG name gigs, I saw Mundy-Turner did a support for Harvey Andrews this year. Get the name seen Organise in your own backyard, session or better still your own club. |

Subject: RE: New Club in HULL From: GUEST,ossonflags Date: 04 Nov 02 - 10:34 AM good news geoff, wont be able to make this thursday, gorra gig. One word of advice though, i think you will find thursday a bad night for a club (people like me who work shifts etc>). The ones i have been associated with have always been on a friday night |

Subject: RE: New Club in HULL From: GUEST,The doorman Date: 04 Nov 02 - 06:37 PM Great location Geoff, Bev road is the epicentre of Hull 'life'. Its walking distance for a huge catchment area....spread the word. Found another pic for your collection @ http://www.btinternet.com/~simon.mason/page211.htm. |
Subject: RE: New Club in HULL From: Little Hawk Date: 05 Nov 02 - 01:50 AM I intend to move to Hull shortly and start a band called "Pinch the Hearse". That should help clarify the situation considerably, I think... :-) We will hog the stage at all opportunities and launch at least 14 threads a week on Mudcat, full of useful information about our activities and proclivities. The anticlivities we will leave to our detractors, who are a Godless lot of heathen wankers and layabouts. Yes, "Pinch the Hearse" will soon become a legend in their own time, and will never have to hire a limousine either, but will travel in the style once popularized by Neil Young....long, black vehicles with purple felt upholstery and skinny windows. - LH |
Subject: RE: New Club in HULL From: The DeanMeister Date: 05 Nov 02 - 06:29 AM Good luck Geoff. Will try to make it. Ossonflags is mistaken by the way, we are playing Thursday 7th, not 14th, so he may be able to make it. Hope it goes ok, mate. |

Subject: RE: New Club in HULL From: GeoffLawes Date: 06 Nov 02 - 04:21 PM Thank you all the encouraging people who have contribted to this thread especially Karen and Colin Thompson who phoned me pdq and said yes they would do a spot. The given voice Music Club will start on Thursday 14 November at The Bull on Beverley Road (near Bev Rd Baths). We will start officially at 8.30 but Steve Gardham, an excellent concertina player, said he will be there around 8.15 to play some tunes so other instrumentalists might like to join him? The Hull singer,Janet Rowan told me a few years ago (when we had had a few during a late night special at The Metropole during Whitby Folk week) that if I started a club in Hull she would come and sing. She is awoman of her word and will do a spot on the 14th So will Steve Bennett, a fine guitarist and singer. Maggie Graham and Les Ward both accomplished singers and instrumentalists have confirmed that they will be there Les says he is looking forward to joining in the pre spot session. Other excellent performers have said they are hoping to be there so if you want a guaranteed spot in the opening, book early and avoid disappointment. Thanks again for all the encouragement. Geoff |
Subject: RE: New Club in HULL From: GeoffLawes Date: 06 Nov 02 - 07:04 PM p.s. yes smallpiper, pipes would be a delight. But if it is for the 14th try and let me know before too long as two more groups have confirmed since my earlier missive and I'd hate to disappoint you. Geoff |
Subject: RE: New Club in HULL From: The DeanMeister Date: 07 Nov 02 - 04:13 AM I will endeavour to be there. What's the form for the evening, Geoff? Pre-arranged spots only, or round the room? |
Subject: RE: New Club in HULL From: GeoffLawes Date: 07 Nov 02 - 03:26 PM Spots it is - but if anyone wants to do one "from where they are" that is fine as long as I can alocate a time to call them. Please come over and talk to me if you make it DeanMeister -I want to meet all of you unknown wellwishers who blew wind in my sails when I needed it. Geoff |

Subject: RE: New Club in HULL From: brid widder Date: 12 Nov 02 - 01:19 PM just a mistake I think John... it is thursday. ...I remember the conversation in the Metropole Geoff... maybe it was the 'few' drinks that made you mistake me for a 'singer'!!! |

Subject: RE: New Club in HULL From: Les from Hull Date: 15 Nov 02 - 02:00 PM Excellent night Geoff - well done indeed. In spite of problems with the beer we all had a wonderful night. The landlady had a word as we left and she wants to provide some food. She suggested chip butties, and I said that half past nine or so would maybe coincide with the break. Perhaps you could give her a ring. |
