The most wonderfully ironic one I think I've ever seen was on a webpage--an ad for a Christian songbook. They had messed up the title to read: "The Hymn Fake Book - A Collection Of Over 900 Mulit-Demoninational Hymns." The idea of a Christian songbook w/ "demon" in the title really got me! The "mulit" was interesting, too!

I have a similar one to Little Hawks, which came from an obituary in my local paper. It stated the late lamented lady, "Was a fiend to all" They too dropped the "r" out of friend.

I still have a very old magazine advertising jobs at WANG computers - at least that's what they meant to put, but the last letter came out as K - in large type.

Not far wrong, from what I heard.

The genuine headline "Newly-weds face mounting problems" in Private Eye years ago, and the (possibly apocryphal) typo in the Irish newspaper article about Queen Victoria's visit to Dublin at the end of the 19th century that mentioned "the wonderful prospect of the Queen pissing over the bridge".

My cousin who lives in Riga, Latvia, told me that some years ago when the Baltic states were still in the vile grip of the Soviets,
the man himself; Stalin, was to visit a huge manufacturing plant in
a place called Ogre (pronounced - o'grey).

To mark this auspicious day 1000 badges were printed with the word "Stalin" on one side, his gruesome face in the centre, and "Ogre" on the other side.

They went like hot cakes!

And were all gone by the time the soviet authorities noticed the error.

Best one I've seen was in the Orillia paper...a headline stating "CASTRO MAKING FIENDS THROUGHOUT SOUTH AMERICA". They left the "r" out of "friends".

They also ran a nice photo of a jackrabbit once, with a caption underneath which said "this ten-metre replica of the narwhal may be seen at the 'Giants of the Sea' display at the Royal Ontario Museum". I have no explanation for this, but the Orillia paper can be a little odd.

Some time back in a thread on Funny Road Signs I posted this:

Speaking of orthographically challenged stippers: Years ago, the then First Interstate Bank (now subsumed by Wells Fargo) was putting up a big building in downtown Seattle, and all around the construction site they posted proud-parent-like signs announcing:

There was one from a Wellington, NZ, newspaper which was reported in Private Eye in the late 60s. It has stuck in my memory ever since. I can't quote it exactly, but two stories had been crossed up. The result was that, at a presentation ceremony, the Mayor of the South Island had been found by police standing on a haystack abusing sheep!

Whilst not a typo, one of the best headlines I have seen was in one of the 'Dog' newspapers, (Dog World, or Our Dogs) shortly after the Kennel Club had failed to rule on whether docking (tail removal)should be allowed for certain breeds. The Headline ?

"Kennel Club fudge the docking issue"

I am sure the available spoonerism must have been deliberate!

The best type I've ever seen was in the newsletter for a concert series. The concert promoter made many typos, but this time he surpassed himself. The concert was to be by the Irish traditional music group called "How To Change A Flat Tire".

Somehow, the promoter morphed that into "How To Fix A Flat Trio".

My late lamented father-in-law was an engineer. Many years ago (early 70s, I guess) he designed a large piece of machinery and, to avoid unnecessary expense and work, had a model made first. On the day it was due to be delivered, there was a message that his model had arrived. "Splendid", he said, "bring it up to my office."

"Er, that's a bit difficult, Mr Cope. It's on a low loader." came the reply.

The workshop had missed the bit at the top that said 'all dimensions in millimetres' and made it in inches!

I used to work for a company like that Lin, only they made conveyors. Mistakes on an engineering drawing usually result in loads of expensive rework but they never did learn. They just kept making things wrong and then had to go back and fix them.

I used to work in a word processing department for a medium-sized law firm in Washington state. Personnel in our department were responsible for proofreading their own documents. This is frequently a good way to miss typos, as your brain knows what you intended to type and skips over misspellings.

One of our lawyers filed the paperwork in Olympia for a "pubicly held corporation." The documents had been read by at least three people: the word processor, the filing lawyer's secretary, and the lawyer himself. All of us missed it...

Does everyone remember the era of "ping-pong diplomacy"? IIRC, it was not only table-tennis wizards that the People's Republic sent over, but athletes of many sorts. Back then, I saw a program listing in TV Guide announcing that viewers could tune in and watch "the Chinese acrobrats".

In the early '70s, the telephone company launched a new slogan: "Let Your Fingers Do The Walking - Through the Yellow Pages." This slogan, and several spin-off variants, appeared on billboards everwhere. They also inserted related ads for themselves as "fillers" in classified ad (Yellow Pages) section of new directories.

Coincidentally(?) the 1971 "major replacement" of the telephone directory was the first to include "Massage Parlors" as "legitimate businesses" in the Yellow Pages. Prominently featured on the first page of listings for "Massage Parlors" was the 'phone company ad:

"Imagine 30 million walking fingers."

I thought it "nicely appropriate," although the company was reported to have taken "disciplinary action" to assure "such errors" would not be repeated.

I committed a strange sentance myself last week, but it was rather subtle, so I let it stand. After I wrote, "Whaling afforded black men employment opportunities they did not have on shore," one of my co-workers pointed out that of course it did, since one seldom hunts whales ON shore.

I worked for a while in a day care center called "Cub Corner Early Childhood Learning Center." The owner was livid when the Yellow Pages made a typo in her (rather expensive) ad, so that it read "...Early Childhood Learing Center." (Even though that's not how you spell "leering," it would sound the same.)

The phone company would not give her any kind of refund on the ad. (They're the phone company. They didn't have to.)

on another note, our local set dancing group made up little posters

Not exactly a typo, but Alice's story of the tee-shirt misprint reminded me of it. When I was working in the college bookstore business, a paper products manufacturer in Atlanta took an order for several thousand spiral-bound notebooks from Florida State University. The books were to be printed with F.S.U.'s name and university seal in the school colors, "garnet and gold". When the order arrived, the books had the correct school name and seal, but they had been printed in orange and blue, the school colors of F.S.U.'s hated arch rival, The University of Florida.

Of course, the order had to be redone. The store I was working in bought the defective notebooks from the paper company for a ridiculously low price and we sold them as novelty items. They actually sold like hotcakes.

Bert: LOL! Nah, I'm pretty sure it was an honest mistake, especially since there was also a Shepherd's Stall set (misspelled "Shepher's Stall") that included a figurine of "A Shepher's"!

On the Tonight Show on Monday nights, Jay Leno has a feature called "Headlines" in which he displays various newspaper clippings with the sort of misspellings and double-meanings seen on this thread. This past Monday, he showed a newspaper ad for a business in Spring House, PA that was described as being across the street from the "Puke Restaurant". It's actually called the Pike Restaurant, but having eaten a few meals there I have to say that, in this case, the typo may indeed have been deliberately made!

I have an egg carton that I've kept for years simply because the brand name was printed at the same size as the word "eggs" and in a very similar font, so that it appears to be a carton of "Wolf Eggs".

When I'm not Pooby the folkie, I'm a full-time newspaper editor, so I've seen bushels of typos (probably more than a few that I'm personally to blame for). But hands down, my all-time favorite (must be, because it dates back about 30 years) was from a New York Times article on the wedding of Tricky Dick's daughter Tricia Nixon to a guy named Edward Cox. A couple paragraphs into the story (but still on Page 1) the reporter was describing Tricia's attire, but a few words or so got left out. The sentence ended up reading: "The bride's gown was decorated with white Cox...."

The worst typo I have intercepted in my career as a copyeditor was in an article on modeling the spread of AIDS. It said that "viral counts were high", except that I had to supply the o.

Some years ago Time Magazine perpetrated a delightfully distracting word division, strictly according to the rules, in a discussion of arms control. It went something like

...it no longer matters which
combatant has the bigger arse-
nal...

In less than a saccade, a vision of sumo wrestlers flashed into my mind.

After complaining many times and getting no response, I finally stuck a Sharpie permanent marker in my glove box, and when I drive through one that I haven't edited yet, I leave with it looking like
