From: Rick Fielding

Hmmmmmm....now I see that my FIRST ten 'facts' are hardly obscure, 'cause they've come up constantly in four years of posting....plus I was being a tad too serious. Well, this is fun (and much cheaper than REAL therapy) so here's some more absolutely true facts, that may be a bit more obscure.

#1. My most prized posession is none of my expensive instruments, but a postcard from Pete Seeger saying "Dear Rick, thanks for the best review I've received in all my 75 years". I'd reviewed his book "Where Have all the Flowers Gone" in the Mariposa Festival Magazine.

#2. I had chats with Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau (but never met "Maggie".

#3. I (and two others from my Local Pony League) was invited to a tryout camp in Montreal by the Chicago Cubs Organization when I was 15. I lasted 3 pitches. I was too slow, too nervous, and was one of the first kids to be sent packing. Two of the three pitches I threw were knocked over the fence by tough inner-city french Kids. I was in shock! My parents bought me a milkshake, but a very important dream ended quite abruptly.

#4. My memory has always been SO selective that I can forget very important things completely and yet can remember what kind of capo David Bromberg used in a concert thirty years ago. I've burned the bottom out of at least fifty pots and pans, by putting something on the stove and then going off to read a book (or look at Mudcat).

#5. I was a bit of a shoplifter when I was a kid. Not much...candies, magazines, small toys etc. I stopped, not because I felt it was morally wrong, but because I was terrified of being caught (obviously more terrified than Wynona). I think it was just a phase, BUT I did walk out of a Big Box store a while ago with three little screws rather than stand for 15 minutes in line.

#6. I've squeezed Crazy Glue into more than one Juke Box in bars where I was playing. It worked. In each place they had to remove the machine to fix it.

#7. I can 'dowse' for water.

#8. I can't dance and was terrified to go to parties when I was a kid. My parents made me go to dancing lessons and I STILL occasionally have nightmares about a huge older woman with an odd smell squeezing the crap out of me and (in frustration at my lack of co-ordination,) saying "ONE two three, ONE two three"! In reality, she was probably thirty, NOT huge, and perfectly nice smelling...but ohhhh boy, did that mess me up!

#9. I won't attend funerals, and ATTEMPT to avoid traditional style weddings. Don't know why (maybe) but my back starts to hurt big-time when I have to sit in Church pews for any length of time. I CAN sit in Church pews for HOURS at a music concert.

#10. The thing I miss most in life that I used to do is not baseball (I quit playing softball about seven years ago when we bought a house and I had to get more serious about my teaching), but..."Taking the overnight train to either Montreal or New York,(Friday Evening) and just walking for miles and miles in each city the next day. They're both so interesting, but I simply stopped doing it.

#11. I TELL people I'm allergic to onions....but I'm probably not. It's just easier than telling them that if I bite into one....I'll throw up right then and there! Minced onion or onion powder don't bother me....just chunks....EEEYAHHHHHH!

Cheers

Rick

One of my favorite sandwiches in PB, banana and mayo on a good, hearty wheat toast. Can you tell I'm a southerner by birth?

And yes, I eat mayo on french fries, but I stir it up with the catsup. The best catsup, however, is the kind without any sweetener in it... the grocery store kind is so sweet it hurts my teeth.

The better the french fry, the better reason to eat with mayonnaise. And I try to stay away from bad french fries . . .

(I can't seem to get away from this thread!)

The other really good peanut-butter-and-pickle-related snack is you take peanut butter and mix it with small cheddar cheese chunks then you stuff it into pickled peppers -- such as banana peppers. Let them "set up" a bit in the fridge. When I first made them, everybody wrinkled their noses -- but they sure didn't last long once someone tried them!

I love a good Elvis special - that's a fried peanut butter & banana sandwich!

Mister loves peanut butter & honey. And when I was a little kid, we used to to peanut butter and marshmallow creme.

Anyone for mayo on french fries? Yum!!!

I guess it's about time for some Supplemental Facts about me. (Hey, this IS addictive!)

1) I eat pie starting with the crust and work towards the point -- the best part.

12) Saw both the Beatles and the Rolling Stones in concert in Milwaukee in 1965. There were less than 200 people at the Stones concert because no one knew who they were. (And Brian Jones was in the hospital in Chicago.)

13) I didn't get my driver's license until I was 32. (The day after I got my divorce.)

14) I didn't see the Atlantic Ocean until I was 20. (I grew up on the shores of Lake Michigan.)

15) I feel so much at home in salt water that I'm constantly surprised my lungs can't breathe it. (What happened to those gills I had before birth?)

Actually, I really like PB on Pepperidge Farm's Wheatberry bread with chutney (Major Grey's does quite nicely) and sprouts. I don't normally care for sprouts, but on PB & chutney, it cuts the sweetness nicely.

For whatever it's worth, I've eaten PB and jelly (all sorts, including mint), PB and mayo, PB and Kraft Salad Dressing, PB and honey, PB and catsup (or ketchup), PB and bananas, PB and carrots, PB on toast, and PB and yellow mustard. I have also eaten and enjoyed mayo and banana sandwiches.

Some of the PB combos above are good. Others I don't recommend, but to each her/his own.

My first rule of cooking: Nontoxic in, nontoxic out -- inedible, maybe, but it won't kill you.

Greg-I shot a quail once and I cryed for an hour, never again will I kill anything either. So when is dinner?

10. You already know, but I can add that I am thankfully breaking through the blocks that have kept me from letting all the poems that are still in me to flow out...
9. I prefer sleeping outdoors. In fact I am known to pitch a tent and camp in my own backyard!
8. I slept in the foc'sle of all our sailboats as a kid with my kid brother. Currently, we are not speaking to one another...
7. I would rather swim in a spring than almost anywhere else! My favorites are Ginnie. Devil's Eye, Wekiva, and Salt Springs...
6. I am making woven potholders for Christmas presents this year!
5. I once capsized in an interlake with nine little kids (while teaching sailing) and I saved all of them from drowning. I was sixteen.
4. I once interviewed John Pollard (I think that was his name), a British researcher who pioneered research on LSD at the University of Michigan when I was a high school journalist and published a long article on the research in 66' in the student publication. They wouldn't let me be an experimental subject.
3. I have been more outspoken about all my opinions and feelings on mudcat than anywhere else in my life. It hasn't always been met with positive responses (to say the least!) but it has allowed me to see a greater picture of my true self. And it has been liberating. Being nice all the time is so tiring!
2. In high school I "lettered" in Field Hockey, Basketball, and Volleyball.
1. I am learning to play the bones!

1. I was married once. My husband was the author of a book of poetry about Viet Nam called A POET GOES TO WAR. I was his third wife out of five or six to date. When my twin daughters died in premature birth he abandoned me. The marriage lasted from wedding date to divorce date - 7 months.

2. I have overcome an intense phobia of using escalators.

3. I had a phobia about driving until after my parents were killed in a car accident. I got my first driver's license at age 30.

4. I bought a car and drove it for the first time when I took my driver's test. Thick snowflakes were falling so that visibility was almost zero. Ronald Reagan had been shot about ten minutes before my test started. The driving examiner was so distracted from the President's shooting that it was all he could talk about. He showed me where the controls for the heat and wipers were because I was unfamiliar with the car. I had never had a driver's lesson. I passed the test perfectly. I've driven excellently and with no fear from that day on.

5. I have climbed the pyramids of Tikal, Tulum, Uxmal, Chichen Itza, Palenque, Monte Alban, Teotihuacan (twice), and Tula.

6. I've seen the "miraculous" image of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City.

7. I had malaria in El Salvador.

8. I had a phobia of singing solo in front of anyone until I was 45.

9. I am related to Cotton Mather on the maternal side of my family.

10. I have a hardcover book illustration on Amazon.com for a book titled "Camp Of The Angel" published by Philomel, a division of Penguin Putnam.

#1) I'm really, really bendable. I can touch my foot to the back of my head (and stuff like that).

#2) I was the first person in the history of the state of Oklahoma (USA) to officially collect, identify, and catalogue a specimen of the Swamp Rose Mallow.

#3) I can communicate in Raccoon language.

#4) I once defended myself against an attacking Collared Peccary using Kung Fu kicks.

#5) Like President Jimmy Carter, I've been attacked by a Rabbit (Black Tailed Jack Rabbit), and lived to tell about it.

#6) Several artifacts in the North American Living Museum of the Tulsa Zoo (Oklahoma, USA) which, last time I checked, were still being passed off to the public as very, very old, and of American Indian and Eskimo origin, were made and artificially aged by me.

#7) I never play my accordion in a public setting unless I'm asked to.

#8) I don't know any Polkas.

#9) I have one of the smallest 41 key, 120 bass accordions in the world.

#10) My first Mother-in-law was one of the original Radio City Music Hall Rockettes.

All facts about me are obscure.

My social security card reads "Freferic."

The most affecting words I've ever known a woman to say--that she can hold a freestanding pose for 40 minutes. Holy figure drawing, Bat girl!

I rode with Truman Capote to a talk he was giving when I was a kid, thought he was a commedian, and I laughed at odd moments, trying to help him out.

I've only ever been interested in pursuing things that I have no aptitude for, the only thing I ever learned easily was symbolic logic, and so I stopped.

I was a lute major my first year of college, the only one, and the major folded down when I transferred.

I've never watched a ballgame of any sort in my life.

I lost my virginity at a very early age, which seems grotesque now, but didn't then. I've been monogamous since I was 17.

I wrote and prosecuted the broadest U.S. patent in wearable picks, which are ideal for me, but don't seem to suit anyone else.

My parents were the most generous spirited people I ever knew, my kids are the best people I know. Something skips a generation.

I notice that I have misspelled the name of the patron for Proper English! Sir Trevor McDonald - sorry!

Bonus fact: My g-g-g grandmother spent the last 12 years of her life in a lunatic asylum, 1836-1848. The scary thing about that is the orignal asylum building was still in use as a mental hospital as recently as 5 years ago, being one of the few that Maggie Thatcher didn't close entirely.

Second bonus fact: I never met Mrs Ackroyd.

Whoo... my life seem terribly boring and mundane after that but here goes....

1) I was once a hunt saboteur.
2) I served Sir Trever McDonald (UK Newsreader and patron of the 'Proper English' campaign) with a beef sandwich, he took hours to finish it.
3) The only politician I let kiss my daughter as a baby was Tony Benn.
4) I've slept in the same bed as Martin Carthy MBE, Sid Kipper and Les Barker & Mrs Ackroyd.
5) I try not to eat anything that has more limbs than I do.
6) I would gut and scale mackerel when I was 6. Can't touch them now.
7) I can sight read music and have perfect pitch - I cannot stay in the same building when the piano is being tuned.
8) I was vegetarian for 8 years.
9) I've signed the Official Secrets Act twice in the line of employment.
10) I once played rude word Scrabble with a priest, in a Friary. He won, and the prize he claimed was me. We were together for 3 years until he went to China to work. There he was one of only 2 Westerners who were neither expelled nor interred after the Student Riots. They escaped over the mountains into India on foot but for a year, even his parents thought he was dead.

Well I said it was boring and mundane....

Well, OK, here goes:

1. I was born in Washington, DC, as were both of my children.

2. My earliest real memory is of Franklin D. Roosevelt's funeral procession. I was not quite 3.

3. According to my parents, when I was a small child I had an imaginary friend named Mrs. Ally-Ally, who lived in the bathroom and served "apple drinks," which I allegedly explained had "apples in them instead of olives."

4. At the age of 7 or 8, watched my brother (then about 12-15 months) swallow a TinkerToy stick. I never told anyone. As far as I know he has never suffered any ill effects, but I always wondered…

5. I won an American Legion award of some sort in high school. I have no idea why.

6. I have the autographs of the Weavers -- all on one piece of paper, Erik Darling, Lee Hays, Ronnie Gilbert, and Fred Hellerman. I also have autographs of Burr Tillstrom and Fran Allison of "Kukla, Fran and Ollie," as well as a dinner menu card with a penciled "Adlai."

7. I know how to make the Land o' Lakes maiden reveal a secret. Do you?

8. Although I have a graduate degree, I managed never to take a single chemistry course.

9. Sign me up for the peanut-butter-and-bacon-sandwich fan club! On white toast, please. This is one of my all-time favorites, learned from my Dad. My son was pleased a few years ago to finally find a place in NYC with PB&B on the menu.

10. I once accompanied (as a roadie, not a member of the band) a folk group comprised of five men on a two-week tour, with 10 gigs, in Southern England and Wales. Had a great time!

Cheers, Nancy

2. I sculpt clay that I dig up in my back yard. I have a santa series right now I call double image, because they are two sided. My trade mark is Motherclay.
3.I had a drink with Frank Zappa at the Night Train in Tucson, AZ.
4.I hitchhiked around the US for five years.
5.Tom Robbins is my favorite author.
6.I am an inventor of many ideas, one I will share is a peanut butter store. I make the peanut butter, pb pies, pb and celery, pb and mayo, fried pb sandwiches, pb cookies, pb malts, you get the idea!
7.I am a rock-hound
8.I've never been married or had children.
9.I sneak out to the karoke clubs once in awhile. I won $400.00 in June at a contest.
I almost died this summer, now I see entities. Whoa!

Duane, I saw a new-in-the-box all-manuals, etc. Vic-20 at a thrift store a while back for $10. I was tempted; it was my first computer, and lord knows I have a fetish for useless mechanical stuff :)

(I was a true capitalist as a kid... I sold it at a yard sale for more than the original price tag...)

1. I graduated from my county college in NJ with an Associate Degree in Applied Sciences after attending for nine semesters and while there during 1971-1972 was a member of SDS and protested at the March on Washington, April 1972.
2. I worked in the early 1970's as a Citroen mechanic and in the late 1970's to late 1980's as a product support technician on aircraft and aerospace accessories and was FAA certified. To this day, I don't and won't fly.
3. Like Bat Goddess, I also can differentiate between the different models of the "T" series MG's. I can also identify the model year of aircooled VW's and Citroen "D" series automobiles.
4. I was an avid fisherman as a teenager and tied my own flies. I designed some of my own patterns and they actually caught fish. Once, while fly fishing at a public park pond in Morristown, NJ,(which was adjacent to the public swimming pool)I accidently foul hooked a teenage girl in the top of her bikini while false-casting. I couldn't do it again if I tried and if I was to do it today, I'd probably be arrested.
5. I was trained as a crewmember for the New Jersey Forest Fire Service and was certified S-130/S-190 and crewed 1991-1995.
6. Around 1970 I started studying and collecting antique utillitarian glass and amassed a sizeable collection, still in my house in NJ.(bottles, jars, insulators)
7. I have, perhaps, the largest private collection of Commodore computers (64,128,colt,amiga).
8. I currently maintain the Folk Legacy computer systems as required.
9. I once had lunch with WWF wrestler Tito Santana and his family and have met and chatted with many important music folks including: Pete Seeger, Don McLean, Melanie, Arlo Guthrie, Tom Chapin, Tom Paxton
10. I once wrote a "Messier Catalogue Notebook" for my astronomy club in NJ and was appointed Messier Certification Committee Chairman for the United Astronomy Clubs of New Jersey (UACNJ). I signed off certificates for those amateur astronomers in NJ who were able to prove observing the entire Messier Catalogue of deepspace objects. Although I have observed the entire catalogue several times, I never applied for certification.

This thread is too good to pass up. Here goes:

1) I always iron my shirts in the same sequence, starting with the collar.

2) I can tie a perfect necktie knot, but only on myself -- and I can't describe to someone else how to do it.

3) When I was 12, I got Richard Nixon's autograph, and I still have it, even though I grew to hate the bastard. Later I got Leonard Bernstein's autograph, but gave it away to a woman I was in love with.

4) When I order a cheeseburger and french fries, I always eat all the fries first.

5) I was the valedictorian of my junior high school class; in high school, I flunked calculus.

5a) I still have my slide rule from high school math class, but I'll be damned if I know how to work it.

6) After 20 years (as of tomorrow), I'm still with my first wife.

7) I sorta wish I never gave up playing the cello, but I'm damn glad I learned to play the guitar.

8) The only foreign countries I've been to are Bermuda and a handful of Caribbean islands.

9) The only bone I've ever broken was my jaw, but I still managed to perform two gigs with my jaw wired shut.

10) I think 3 is a mystical, almost holy, number -- and 27 (3 to the third power) is even more so.

Whew... That wasn't so bad now. Peace and harmony to all.

Poobs

Hi. Art says to tell you:
1. This is the first time I have ever posted to mudcat as myself.

OK. The rest of this is from me, not him:

2. I spend some time chatting on Mudchat second hand--Art (he spends a lot of time...) will be chatting and I will be saying things like, "What are they talking about now?" and "Oh! Tell them..." Or, of course, he will have come to me for the answer to some obscure question, because
3. A mind is a terrible thing to waste, but mine is full of trivia, mostly pretty useless.
4. I can indulge in chatting over Art's shoulder because of the way the main room of our house is. I love it. Standing at the sink I can look out a window onto the neghbor's wall and some greenery, or over the sink at the back of Art's head and the computer screen, and beyond him, a couch with usually at least one of three cats. Or perhaps a cat on the desk or the sink counter. (Yuck.)
5. Three cats. "The boys", or sometimes, the "bonnie bad boys".
6. I did coursework at 7 colleges before acquiring my first bachelor's degree (met Art during the first; there is a connection). About eleven years later I started the second B.S., took 6 years and four schools but that one has been more useful for contributing to society (!) and earning. They call them B.S. for a reason, no?
7. All four of my grandparents came to America by sea early in the 20th century; two from England and two to get out of tsarist Russia.
8. Often I would rather sew, bead or knit at home than go out anywhere fancy. Not always.
9. I'd rather folkdance than almost anything else.
10. I can be verbose at times.

Sins:

Yep, perfect mold to my rear. However, I had a very small butt back then. Last I heard, my sister gave away the frame of the kayak with the seat still attached. Either someone recovered it, or it is on a bar wall somewhere. No, the frame, not the seat.

1. I'm afraid to fly, but do it anyway.
2. I have a major case of performance anxiety.
3. Hardly anyone who knows me knows that I play the fiddle.
4. I've performed in public exactly ONCE. The hired band at a corporate Christmas party should NEVER hand the microphone to someone who has had 16 buttery nipple martinis.
5. I was a published author by the age of 15, but haven't written much of anything since.
6. In college, I was a die-hard Republican.
7. I was once interrogated by the Secret Service for a college prank pulled at a rally in which a Republican presidential candidate was speaking.
8. I was once denied a security clearance to work at an event a certain president was speaking at.
9. My ancestors include Irish slaves in Barbados and Danish royalty, but mostly just a whole lot of German farmers.
10. I'm horribly allergic to onions.

Morticia is shy and grumpy in the morning? Not for the few days I spent with her. Maybe it was the Nyquil. She did give Captain K a run for his money. The lady is very quick and very funny.

Hey, Sins --

What did you move to Maine for if you don't like lobster?!? (Can I have your share, please, can I, huh?)

I prefer Perrier Jouet in the Lalique bottle (but mostly can only afford to fantasize about it). Cordon Rouge is a bit sweet for my taste.

I'm tweaking my supplemental obscure facts list before posting it.

1. I was the first baby born in San Angelo Texas in 1955, and my brother was the second.

2. I made a 14 foot canvas and wood Kayak from plans in a book I ordered from England, when I was a Junior in High School and then only used it about 5 times. The coolest part was the shaped plexiglass seat that required sitting on the plexiglass while it was hot!

3. As a business venture my Dad imported a chinese junk that we sailed in on Lake Travis when I was 7. It ultimately was used as a bar by LBJ on his lake.

4. My mom's maiden name is Findlater and we are part of the Oglivie Clan. Our ancestors include the Earle of Findlater and there is a Findlater Castle in Scotland (2 miles east of Cullen in Banff). The Castle fell into ruins after it was abandoned in 1600. The story goes that in about 1560, the Ogilvie Laird argued with his son, disinherited him, and signed the properly over to Sir John Gordon, third son of the Earl of Huntly. In 1562, the Gordons rebelled against Mary. refusing her entry to the castle, and when they were defeated at the Battle of Corrochie, the Earl was beheaded and the castle was abandoned was in ruins by 1638. So I may have a real beheaded ghost in the family!

5. I can crack a bull whip really loud! As we found out one summer while trying to load young bulls in a cattle trailer: If you stand your ground bulls will still chase you! Bulls get the runs when they are scared. A cattle prod doesn't hurt but it shocks the bejezzus out of you! And that's no bull.

6. I'm married to a twin named Linn.

7. I got my first non-musical musical instrument in my Xmas stocking when I was 11. It took us forever to figure out how to play that jaw harp. Since then, I have become a master of non musical instruments, and am forever trying to learn real ones.

8. My brother and I took 2nd in the state (Michigan) in Forensics Multiple Reading in High School in "The Secret Life of Walter Middy" (I was the mild Walter). Since then I am a closet Story Teller.

9. I have broken more bones than anyone I know, and average a major break about every 5 years. Last time I drove myself to the hospital, and they wouldn't believe that I had a compound fracture of my foot...until they took the xrays.

10. I spent a summer in 1974 living on the corner of Haight and Cole one block up from Haight-Ashbury while working as a construction worker building Embarkadero #3. While there we (my brother and I) took a improvisation class and did street improv in the park.

and

11. I wear a pocket protector at work.
