Well, here we go again! More facts:

#11; I was born in a toilet (my face was flushed, but my broad shoulders saved me);

#12; MY cat, Kissa Poika, and I make mad passionate love. Afterwards, he requests a ciggarette, but I deny him;

#13; I can play melodies with my neck bones;

#14; Did mention that I was born in a toilet?

#6529008 After weeks of trying, I'm unable to think of a single fact about myself that my wife doesn't already know. Except that time I slept with her sister.

I lived a year or more in Oxford MS, about a block from Faulkner's house, and never saw it.

Here's an unlucky 13th fact about me to refresh this thread:
I have metal plates in my ankle and wrist. Unlucky because today the ones in my wrist were supposed to come out, but one of the bones hasn't healed yet, so I have a new plate in my wrist and it's very sore and I can't drive and I am typing very slowly with 2 fingers.I just noticed the heading says "for fun". Not my idea of fun, in fact you could say, more like wrist slashing. Ah well.....

1. I haven't been to the movies since 1986, & have never owned a television, tho I did have custody of my brother's TV while he was o/s in 1978.

2. I have a friend who is an actor & didn't realise for months after meeting him that he is very well known. Several years ago I ran across him & a few of our friends, & a stranger, Tony. Everyone else knew they were meeting Sir Anthony Hopkins, I said hello Tony. Well, what else would I say?

3. I am definitely the only non-performer running a folk club in Sydney & maybe Australia. I love singing along with the choruses but can't hold a tune on my own or recogise a note. I just love it when the choir leaders blow a little note & all hum it then start singing. I also watch bemused when guitarists are tuning up (sounds all right to me, I think to myself!)

4. Back in the days when I had my brother's TV, I lived on Bondi Beach (everyone knows Bondi, it's Australia's most famous beach) & I never stepped on the sand, nor did I dip a toe in the water. But I did look at it every day when I caught the bus to work. I like looking at the ocean. I was reminded of this by Mudlark's wrong guess on the Mystery Santa Goofy Hints thread.

5. All Australian's love sport (generalisation) I hate sport - playing it or watching it.

6. All Australian's love beer (another generalisation) - my normal drink is water, with an occasional fruit juice.

maybe I'll think of more obscure facts later

two more for me...

14. I've just had my very first magazine article published in a music magazine - double spread!

15. I was once escorted off a marina in Annapolis by 3 FBI - bomb squad - type people. I'd wandered into a restricted area with my friends - we'd only wanted to go see the boats, they looked pretty. And they had some kind of function going on. First of all this fella in a blue t-shirt/sweater type thing came up to me and my friends and asked us if we were part of the entertainment.

Then when we said, NO! That we were just having a look at the boats, his face changed into a funny sort of red and panic - then asked us how we got into the marina. I just pointed at the gates and said, well, we just walked on in through there - he was amazed that no one had stopped us - and then all of a sudden, radios were blasting to put more security on the gates, the man turned his back to speak into his collar and it was then I saw the back of his t-shirt!

Tapping my friends we all saw it and then were bewildered what was going on - two more FBI guys turned up, and the three of us were escorted - in the nicest way off the harbour.

We didn't have a clue - 3 UK girls on holiday, touring about, just wanting to see the boats. Still didn't find out what it was that was going on!

Ella

Allan C - I AM considering becoming becoming a member, there are just a couple of questions on the form where I'm not sure what to put. I'm currently asking Sandra's advice and it'll happen soon.

Which brings me to no. 12) I know next to nothing about computers. I've only had one for about 3 weeks so I have a lot to learn.

Then you must know, Jenny, that it was there that Ringo supposedly coined the term, "groty" which later became "grody" (from the word, grotesque).
Consider becoming a member, Jenny. There are no hidden catches and the Personal Message feature can be quite nice.

Additional facts about me:

I am very safety conscious and am always alert (especially in the workplace) for potential safety issues.

My first starring stage appearance was in the role of "The Littlest Christmas Tree" in fourth grade. Mom made my costume. It consisted of a Kelly green, felt, A-line skirt with a similar overshirt and a conical hat. No photos were taken, fortunately.

I once aspired to become a high school choir teacher/director. I had a hero who was one and who inspired and nurtured my musical potential. I wanted to emulate him. While I don't regret not having followed the path that would have led me toward that career, I do wonder sometimes how it might have been.

I am a people-watcher. I love getting small glimpses of folks being themselves and doing whatever it is that they do. I think most people are fascinating. One of my all-time favorite quotations is: "There was never yet an uninteresting life. Such a thing is an impossibility. Inside of the dullest exterior there is a drama, a comedy, and a tragedy." -- Mark Twain

* For 26 years my birthday was on November 24th. Then I found a calendar of that year and discovered I'd been born on the 28th instead. (Everyone agreed that it had been Thanksgiving Day when they woke up that morning.) So I'm four days younger than I used to think. My birth wasn't registered, until I had it done in my 30s, because I was born in a North Dakota blizzard and the midwife couldn't make it to the house.

* I saved my adopted sister from drowning. My family nurtured foster children for a number of years and one day we went to the river to swim. Each of us older ones (I was 15) were assigned two children each to watch- mine were two little boys: Tommy, age 5 and Torlik, 10 months. With Tommy by the hand and Torlik on my left arm I waded into the water. Something made me turn to my left and there behind me was Jeannie, age 3, lying on her back under the surface, her eyes and mouth wide open.

I flung Torlik to my right arm, Tommy grabbed me by the thigh and I scooped Jeannie up with my left arm, lost her once and swooped again. Then with her lying over my left leg to help her drain, I lurched for the riverbank, yelling for someone to come help me. As I got close, I looked up and on the bank were three siblings watching us, mouths agape. Gads, I was angry.

Well, maybe one more..

11. Once, many years ago, while sitting in a woman friend's living room on a Sunday morning reading the NY Times, I heard a strange, sing-songy cry behind me and turned to see her dance out of the kitchen ON FIRE. Apparently, she'd reached across a burner on the stove to get something, flame touched shirt and poof. Wrapped her in a blanket, just a few minor burns, really….something you don't forget

So one more fact I could add about myself, I suppose, is that I don't live my life in fear. Yay!!!!!

There are currently about 80 fires in and around Sydney, and the one near my place has died off. There are some very bad fires in the north west part of Sydney, right near the F3 freeway which is the main route north from Sydney to the Central Coast. I was intending to visit my son up there today to see his new house and I am still debating whether I should go. He thinks I should come and other people are telling me I'd be mad to go. I'm not usually so indecisive but I just don't know. One thing I should bear in mind is that in the past I have rarely regretted things I have done, usually things I have NOT done. The road has been closed intermittently but it is open at the moment. I don't think it would be dangerous - I just might get stuck in traffic or find it hard to get back tomorrow. My flatmate can look after my cat so that's not a problem. I'll be deciding within the next half hour. Looking for a sign.

Partridge--yikes. I have an older brother and a little sister myself. Being a middle child is a little like having all 4 wisdom teeth out, you don't sit for those 2-wisdom teeth war-stories. My wife is a first-girl who used to try to pass as a "middle-child."

MattR, just teasing you as to whether 1. building models, and 8. collecting Lord of the Rings figures maybe had any causal relation to 7. never been kissed. But seriously I envy you what you can look forward to, because you wind up always wanting to recapture it--not that you can't, but you can't all the time.

--I've been with one woman since I was 17, which is a little more than 20 years ago. I count it as obscure since not even she knows it for a fact.

Helping this on the way to 400, a few more..

A snapshot O took of my mom feeding my sister's cat spaghetti off of her fork was one of eight top prize winners in a statewide Kodak competition. They gave me a 10 X 12 blowup of it which was displayed at the national level in Washington D.C. I had it framed and matted and we used it at mom's graveside service when she passed away.

My friend, Ricky Miller, and I were on television when we were in 6th grade. We played a duet of Silent Night on our violins.

I got to sing with the Pesuasions in a class they held the next day after a concert. I also got to interview them for a pre-concert article. Also interviewed INXS, Moody Blues, Sawyer Brown and a few other groups for articles I wrote for the statewide newspaper. My first paid-for newspaper gig was reviewing a local college production of Guys and Dolls. That parlayed into a monthly op/ed column which lead to a national weekly column.

I have a scar on my right hand where sealing wax burnt me. As a kid I used it on all of my notes and letters!

I stepped out of our family car once on a picnic in the mountains of Colorado and right at my feet was a perfect arrowhead.

I once made all of my Christmas presents from gourds grown in my garden.

JennyO - how's the fire situation near Sydney? Still had those rainclouds on my mind as I fell asleep last night.

I agree that these situations often happen for a 'bigger reason' that we don't understand right away. In fact I was going to mention that in my post yesterday, but it wouldn't have sounded very helpful at the time.
Sonetimes it's wiser to focus on the trees, not the whole forest, so to speak.

Gary Z's books have often caught my eye - I'll check them out!

Meantime, hope all is well for you and your kitty ....

Hope my positive energy is as long and stretchy as your tongue!

Mytoycar--which one?

Partridge--I once explained to a woman I'd just met, who had an older brother and a younger sister, that she was not a middle child but a First-girl, and proved by algebra that her family had no middle child. You're not trying to claim middle child status are you?

Matt R, Do 1+8 perhaps = 7?

Someone found this odd--I only use regular soap and hot water to shave.

To answer Lyle first - normal nose and long stretchy tongue. It's an impressive party trick, although some people are a bit grossed out by it. Thanks for the positive energy.

And to daylia, thank you for what you wrote. It really lets me experience, first hand, feeling connected. I believe we can change things with our thoughts. I had not heard of "The lost mode of prayer" before, or Gregg Braden, but I do use visualization to create the realities of things that I want. I can do small stuff, like finding parking spots, so much that my friends joke about my legendary ability. With more important things, one thing I have noticed is that even when things don't seem to be going the way I want, there is usually a bigger picture, a reason which becomes evident further down the track, sometimes it is a lesson I need to learn. Have you read any books by Gary Zukav? I can recommend "Seat of the Soul" I'll look up Gregg Braden's website - should be interesting. You might be interested to know that there was a cool change last night and the Blue Mountains even had some rain. Sydney missed out on the rain, however, and there are still strong gusty winds which we need to drop. The fire danger is still very high and there are still about 40 fires burning. Although I live in an inner suburban area of Sydney(East Ryde), the unthinkable happened last night - a large fire sprang up in a reserve two streets away, and I spent a sleepless night lying in bed listening to the wind and smelling the smoke, having made a list of things to take if I was evacuated, and having filled the gutters with water and hosed down the house. Today this fire has died right down but others are still raging. Just the process of making the list makes you think about what really matters and what you really need. First on the list was my cat Onyx, followed by photo albums, important papers, my mandolin, fiddle and drums, my CD's, my camera, followed by stuff like my computer, stereo, etc etc. Anything further down the list than the musical instruments would have been a bonus. In fact, so would anything more than me and my cat. This would make an interesting thread, wouldn't it! Top 5 things you would take if your house was about to burn down. I've never started a thread and I'm not sure I'd know how. In fact I've only had a computer for 3 weeks and I'm still feeling my way around. My lovely brother in Paris gave it to me as an early Christmas present and my equally lovely son put it together and set it up,and already I am spending heaps of time on it, lots of it on Mudcat. Keep sending your lovely positive energy and I am sure it will make a difference.

I sent out a gang email to about 20 or so, and the results are now rolling in. Like the M'cat thread, some serious, some interesting, some dumb, some ROTFLMAO. Would that be because of a long tougue or a very short nose?? Curious minds want to know!

JennyO, thanks for being a 'kindred spirit'. We ARE all connected! I see each of the different belief systems/religions as colours of the same rainbow, so to speak. To know and embrace each colour in it's uniqueness is to bring unity and beauty and healing to my world - both inside and outside myself. Whatever I create within myself ripples out to effect everything and everyone I touch ...

Sorry to hear about the bushfires in Australia. Positive energy is coming your way now ... I'll try visualizing rainclouds sending gentle healing waters over the area while I go out for my walk this morning.

Ever heard of the "Lost Mode of Prayer"? This takes 'prayer' one step further than the usual pleading for supernatural help, which always tends to reinforce feelings of powerlessness, for me anyway.

It's about imagining that what you are praying for - say world peace or an end to those fires - has ALREADY HAPPENED. What would that look like, feel like? Let your mind play with these images, and fill yourself with the emotions that those imaginings produce (joy, relief, gratitude, whatever). Your emotions are then empowering the thought-images you've created, making them physically 'real'. Know that this is so - our thoughts, empowered by emotion and directed by our will/intent, are what create all of our experiences, good or ill. We DO have the power to change our world however we choose! If we only learn to use that power effectively ... to create what we WANT instead of what we DON'T want ...

You can find out more about the "Lost Mode of Prayer" on Gregg Braden's website, if you like. Just search for 'gregg braden'. Most interesting stuff ...

Happy trails

daylia

Daylia, I'm with you on being a pagan. The great thing about it is that it is all-embracing. It is about having respect for all living beings and personal freedom and making a difference with love, not judgment and "being right" Therefore I love Jesus and Buddha and all the great teachers and shamans of the world. We are all connected.

In the spirit of this, could I mention that, as I speak, Sydney,Australia is experiencing a serious outbreak of bushfires in the outer suburban areas, so could anyone who believes as I do that sending positive energy can make a difference, please send some here?

This sounds like fun! You mudcats have wonderful obscurities - here's some of my own.

My real name's not 'daylia'!

When my cat gets herself in a foul mood, attacking my feet as I walk by, sometimes I get out my diggery-doo and blast her with some really loud notes. This shocks her back into her usual laid-back mood. I only do it when there's no one else around though ....feel a little guilty about it.

I talk to trees and chipmunks and rocks and sunsets. If I listen the right way they talk back!

I record my dreams and take them very seriously. Sometimes I make major changes in my life because of what my dreams show me. My dreams never lie!

My favorite breakfast is banana-and-waffle sandwiches.

I smoke ... but only outside. Not even Little Hawk has managed to "cure" me yet ... tobacco is a sacred plant for good reason!

Sometimes even one beer or drink makes me feel sick. This really bugged me in my youth, but now I'm old and wise and I don't care!

I actually enjoy shovelling snow. Not what the plow leaves at the end of my driveway though!

I was born with what they call 'perfect pitch'. I try not to let this show, though. It can be a real handicap sometimes, like when I'm playing a transposing instrument or one that's not at concert pitch. When my hands are playing one thing and my ears are hearing another, I can get totally confused. Feels like being cross-wired! Also, my family and musical friends tend to drive me nuts with "what's that chord? What's that note?" when they are trying to figure out something 'by ear'. So don't tell anyone .... and thanks for listening to my bitchin'.

Although people who know me think I'm a 'pagan' because I love practicing earth-spirituality, ceremonial magic and Eastern-style meditation, I LOVE JESUS AND THE ANGELS! And they love all of my 'pagan' ways .....

Was that ten? Felt like ten! That's enough, anyway!

Cheers!

daylia

I only just found this thread and couldn't resist it. In fact I've only had a computer for two weeks, so I am almost a virgin, in that sense. Reading the others got me thinking about some of my more obscure facts, so here goes:

1. I can touch my nose with the tip of my tongue.

2. I went to a concert in the early 60's where the Rolling Stones were a support act for Roy Orbison.

3. I once had my photo taken with Cilla Black

4. When I was at a folk festival a few years ago, a large piece of wood fell on my head - while spending a few hours in hospital, I wrote a silly poem about it and performed it, complete with black eye, the next day at the festival. A couple of weeks later, I started a folk club and joined a community choir, so it obviously did something to me!

5.For a few years I worked for a kid's show host who was well known in Australia. I was supposed to be his housekeeper, but had to do some strange things for him sometimes, such as helping him dress up as Santa, painting his nose red and stuffing a pillow up his Santa suit.

6.My great great grandparents both had children when they married, and later when their children grew up, they fell in love and got married, too.

7.My dad was 21 years older than my mother, and already had 4 teenage children, so now I have lots of nephews and nieces older than me (shades of I am my own grandpa, but that's another thread)

8.I talk to the trees - and they talk to me too!
"I talk to the trees, that's why they put me away!" (Spike milligan)
I'm not sure if I believe in past lives - I didn't last time either

9.I'm an ageing hippie/activist/bodhran playing/folkie/witch.

10. I'm a closet fiddle player (probably the best place for me).

Just a couple of questions -

Willie-O, you said you were born on 22nd August, 9 months after Christmas. By my calculation that is only 8 months. Have you been laboring under a misapprehension all this time? I was born on 28th September, which is much closer.

Liz the squeak, I was in the UK last year, touring with my choir. My friend Rhymin' Simon, who is also in the choir, stayed on a bit longer, in August, to go to some festivals and he said he met someone who called herself Liz the squeak. Could that be you? He was tall with a long grey beard.

Since there seems to be a sub-plot to this thread having to do with peanut butter and whatever combinations.....

Someone way back toward the beginning of this thing was raving about peanut butter and bacon. I tried it last night and found it to be an exceedingly mediocre combination. I don't think it will become a staple around here.

Just a little extra BS to keep this thread on track toward 400.

Bruce

Oh, hell:

*I was on television at at age 7 and again at age 10 -- and it was 45 years before they let me on again.

*One brother owns a lightly used coffin, a canoe, a boat, a motorcycle, two cannons, and ten swords. My other brother is a bit strange.

*My father was a carpenter and my mother a lady (no foolin'!)

*My brothers, wife, and I do historical re-enactment -- using my grandfather's still to demostrate distilling!

Thank god and max for page breaks!

1. When I was 9 I went on a kids show with my dog--we were a hit and I met Bing Crosby on the way out.

2. Stole a basketball from Bullocks Westwood on a dare...just walked out of the store with it.

3. Wore beatnik black, haunted the coffee houses of Venice, CA and wrote bad poetry

4. Was an afficianado of the bullfights in my misspent youth...even I can't believe that now.

5. Hung out at Rosarito BEach when it was just a big, beautiful hotel, with the best margaritas and best mariachis in Baja.

6. I had to follow Jose Felliciano on an open mic night in a folk club called The Gate of Horn

7. When I was young I could hold my liquor so well I was always the designated driver

8. Once owned an island called Charles in the Trincomali Channel.

9. Had the only outhouse in Madison Co., Ark. with a real toilet seat, an electric light for those nighttime visits, AND a window.

10. Can slice homemade bread straight.

Oops, Genie! I lost track of this thread and didn't see your question until just now.

I was a wildlife rehabilitation worker and after that, a zookeeper back in the 1970s. With species like raccoons that were native to the areas where I was living, I would take in orphaned babies, raise them, and then release them when they reached maturity.

The idea was to try to imitate the way a mother raccoon would raise her young as much as possible. So what the babies were telling me was that they were hungry or scared or just checking to make sure I was nearby, or whatever, and I would use the sounds a mother raccoon would make to communicate things like "get over here", or "everything's ok", or "Danger!", etc.

;-)

I can verify what Celtic Soul has said about her age, but only as a probibility. We found her in the cabbage patch (I think the Stork brought her or something), so we're not exactly certain.

in response to Fred Miller WAY back up there..(I had not read the rest until tonight)

"Bill D, the greatest per capita concentration of unusually attractive people seems to me to be in Lawrence KS. What's going on there?"

well, Lawrence is a bit like Fort Collins, Colorado(where the coeds I saw nearly made me step on my tongue)...it is a college town, and LOTS of attractive young folk are about...other than that, I can't say....(Now in Omaha, they all seemed to be farm girls and WELL fed on corn....)

11. I name all my animal friends after rocks. Dogs-Zircon and Jade, Cat-Cinnabar, Rooster-Alabaster, Chickens- Ruby, Opal, Agate, Emerald.
Deceased animals- Diamond (in the rough), Topaz, Jet, Jasper.
12. I sang to Shawn Phillips on his stage while he was tearing down from a show. I was more than half drunk on tequila. He autographed all my old album covers and said he would come to play at my place for $1,500.00. (He is now a fireman down in Texas)
13. (This is the last one I will post to this, I swear it is!) I played harp for Jonny Lang when he was just starting out. I think he was about 14, at a tavern in Northern MN. Then I pissed him off when I told him I had always wanted a virgin.(he claimed he wasn't one)
what post number are we at now?

Just keeping the thread simmering, in case somebody wants to post message number 400 ...

15. An uncle, on my father's side of the family, was once a magistrate (in Gateshead, North-East England). I haven't spoken to him for many years, now. Partly, we have all drifted away, and I like to think that we "black sheep" of our families, have some principles to uphold [tongue firmly in cheek].
16. Another uncle, on my mother's side this time, emigrated to Australia and died there a few years ago.
17. I recently achieved a long-held ambition, and played guitar along with "Guitar George" Borowski, all right, a mere half dozen chords before somebody snatched it off me, at a friend's "house-microwaving" party (she got the house after a contested divorce, this was its "re-warming"); but it still counts, in my book.
18. I once travelled thirty miles in a coffin. (My little brother owned a BSA C11 motorcycle, at one time. It had a sidecar, the body of which had rusted away, and been replaced with a plywood coffin.)

11. My half-brother is 23 years older than I am. Which makes him the same age as the parents of many of my friends.

12. My dad has a cousin named Jim Carter. He's not a former president of the US, though.

13. I won a putting tournament of the local Junior Golf Club when I was ten, beating the boy who'd won it the previous year (he was very upset to have lost to a girl).

14. I had the highest single SAT score of anyone who has graduated from my high school to date (one boy got ten points higher if you took his verbal score from his first test and the math from the second), and received a National Merit Commendation (i.e. "you're not smart enough for us to give you money, but here's a nice piece of paper for you").
