Not to interrupt all the BS here, but I'm surprised we haven't seen any discussions of this young 'un. I'm currently listening to this song, which grew so much on me from my kids MTV airplay, that I went out and bought the CD. Here is a girl who has ALL the talent. Voice, instrumental chops (though I know they'll get better) and arranging and writing talent.

Anyone else "fallen" for this great new talent?

Oops--spelling correction (I hit send, before I previewed). Fallin' is the name of the song, and her last name is spelled Keys.

I love this girl!

The title of the song is "Fallin" and is found on her newest CD "Songs in A Minor". The girl can wail, smolder, and growl in the best sense of the blues and R & B tradition.

I liked the song, but I haven't heard any of her other stuff. I thought "Fallin'" was surprisingly understated for such a popular song.

Well, her MTV thing may end up killing her. But if she can get beyond it (not easy at her tender young age, and the desire to be accepted by her peers), and stay focused on the music, I predict she will become one of the greats.

Mister and I saw her on Saturday Night Live awhile back and both agreed that she is pretty incredible. Definitely outstanding amongst the crop of young poppers these days.

Ditto for india.arie.

KimC, I'm curious. Why do you label Alicia Keys' music as pop? I mean, Britney or Macy Gray she ain't! Now, india.arie I would label pop. But this one CD of Alicia Keys' that I have definitely doesn't sound like pop--R & B for sure, with some blues stuff mixed in.

I didn't mean that her music is pop - it isn't. I meant that she stands out from the pop artists on the radio. Here in Nashville she gets played on the pop stations right alongside Britney and Pink and the like.

There you go! That makes sense. Like I said, I first saw her on MTV, so you are right, she is getting cross-over airplay. And fair play to her for that too! But I put her stylistically in the R & B and blues genre. She has one set of pipes, that girl!

I haven't heard it. Is it the same "Falling" that Lennon and McCartney wrote for the Beatles (later done as a banjo-heavy bluegrass number by ???)?

I agree with most of what's been said. I have the CD and would consider Alicia as one of the front runners in a surprising crop of real new talent arising from the derivative quagmire that is a lot of today's "MTV culture" music. I would also put some others like Meshell Ndegeocello in this "excellent" category.

No beadie, it isn't the same song. The lyrics to the song aren't all that great (which is true of a lot of writing on the album). But the delivery makes you not really care! In fact, I'd say the lyrics are the one weak point Keys will have to work on. But she doesn't have too many weak points for a woman of her tender age.

mooman, I agree about Meshell Ndegeocello too. I just hope the pop industry doesn't take them away, and that they aren't destroyed by the MTV/BET culture. It must be very difficult for young musicians to try and make it these days in the R & B world. They are getting pulled in a lot of different directions that previous generations haven't had to deal with. Makes me hope someone sits down next to them every single day and says "the cable TV industry isn't the REAL music world". God knows, the music business is bad enough!
