Subject: RE: Christmas Folk Music From: Ron Olesko Date: 10 Dec 02 - 09:41 AM I would like to invite all Mudcatters (and anyone else who reads this!) to join me for the annual Christmas program that I host on WFDU-FM. The show will be broadcast on Sunday December 22 from 3 to 6pm on 89.1FM in the NYC area, and you can listen in via the internet at www.wfdu.fm . On this program (which I have been hosting on the Sunday before Christmas for the last 23 years) I feature carols and folk songs from artists like Pete Seeger, Jean Ritchie, Odetta, the Christmas Revels, Nowell Sing We Clear, Cyril Tawney and many others. I try to give some background behind the songs, and we will have a few guests this year to talk about the traditions. The main focus is on enjoying the music of the holiday and I'm proud to say that many listeners have sent me notes that they gather their families together to listen to the show, trim the tree, and share in the holiday spirit. I hope that some of you will be able to listen in as well. Ron Olesko WFDU-FM |

Subject: RE: Christmas Folk Music From: Haruo Date: 10 Dec 02 - 12:24 PM Ron, you need to put the http:// part in your links, otherwise the browser thinks "www.wfdu.fm" is a page on the Mudcat site. Try this: www.wfdu.fm. Haruo |

Subject: RE: Christmas Folk Music From: Haruo Date: 10 Dec 02 - 12:45 PM Note to Max or whoever: Might not hurt to have the "Make a link ("blue clicky") blickifier page clue people in to this. People who don't know how to make a clickie from scratch are unlikely to know that they need to write "http://"... most browsers have trained people not to know such things, and ads routinely reinforce their ignorance. Subject: RE: Christmas Folk Music From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 10 Dec 02 - 09:17 PM I have just gotten about 14 Christmas Hymns which were written to the tune of a variety of traditional tunes. I'll post them in this thread as I get a chance to type them up. A number of them were written by something called the "Iona Community", which I assume to be something tied to the Scottish Hebridean Islands. |

Subject: RE: Christmas Folk Music From: GUEST Date: 11 Dec 02 - 12:35 PM At http://research.yale.edu/lawmeme/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=681 is a light discussion of copyright issues related to Christmas songs, with links to a poll in which you can vote for your favorite from a list of 12 songs. Greenfleeves and Filent Night are both on the list, though many other favorites aren't. Silent Night currently has a slim lead over "Carol of the Bells". |

Subject: RE: Christmas Folk Music From: Genie Date: 11 Dec 02 - 01:20 PM I tried to vote, but when I clicked on the "vote" link, there was no option for voting. They're obviously not limiting the poll to folk songs, since Winter Wonderland and Rudolph were in the top 5 or 10. Also I wasn't clear whether voters were limited to those 12 (since the voting option didn't work). At any rate, internet polls mean about as much as the paper they aren't written on. |

Subject: RE: Christmas Folk Music From: GUEST Date: 11 Dec 02 - 01:25 PM I did it just now: I clicked the little circle next to "Away in a Manger", then clicked "Vote". It seemed to kick in. Your right, of course, that no one takes internet polls seriously, not even the people who post them. |
