Subject: Genuine folk song

Last night on PBS I tuned in to a folk music fundraiser just in time to hear a song - but I didn't get the name of the group or the name of the song! The show was hosted by the Smothers Brothers. I think the group's name may have been the Limelighters (or Hilighters?) and the song was "a genuine folk song" gently mocking out the standard format of a folk song (This is the first verse....This is the Bridge...etc.). Anyone know anything about this song and where I can get the lyrics and chords? Thanks - Lee

I think this is it, from the PBS Special, This LAnd is Your Land - The Folk Years.

The Generic Up-tempo Folk Song
Sung by the Limeliters

This is our up-tempo folk song,
the one we use to start the show
Our up-tempo folk song,
the kind that every folk-singer ought to know
The kind that sets your toes a-tapping,
and makes you wanna sing along
The one that we stole from the Kingston Trio,
a generic up-tempo folk song

This is the middle of our up-tempo folk song,
it's called the second verse
You've gotta sing it warm and tender,
to make it sound different from the first
This where we look at all the people,
just to see who is around,
And if you sing the second verse softly,
the crowd usually quiets down.

This is the bridge and it's really exciting;
it has a different blend.
The purpose of the bridge is to get from the middle
to the beginning of the end.
This is our up-tempo folk song,
and the end is drawing is near
And by now, you're so gosh-darn excited:
you want to stand right up and cheer

And say HURRAY for the folk survivors,
May they sing forever strong
And for the land of the brave and free,
a generic up-tempo folk song.

(instrumental break) "a generic instrumental"

And say HURRAY for the folk survivors,
May they sing forever strong.
May they shed a tear each time they hear
a generic up-tempo folk song

A generic up-tempo folk song

After a little looking on the 'net, I find that the song was written by Larry Rand, and can be found on The Limeliters - Until We Get It Right

Enjoy, it is certainly up-tempo!

Seems I recall a similar type song from The Fourmen (Foremen?), a parody and humor group, don't I? I'll have to look it up in my CDs when I get home.

Lee, I think you're best to buy the CD and learn it. It's really neat.

Larry Rand and I co-hosted (alternating weeks) National Public Radio's weekly folk festival show called THE FLEA MARKET in the mid 1980s. I do recall him singing this song about then.

Art, I remember hearing that show! Didn't they introduce you as "the king of the 9-string guitar"?

Aloha,
Mark
