Sorry to start a new thread on this - couldn't find the old one to resurrect.

I went to Grenoside & Oughtibridge last weekend and had a terrific sing - and listen. Some folkies there (I met a regular from the long defunct Stevenage FC whom I hadn't met for 15 years!) but mostly locals. String quartet in the Red Lion at Grenoside (Friday) & piano in The Travellers Rest at Oughtibridge (Saturday).

Well worth the journey - highly recommended. The book's brilliant value too at only a fiver.

And unless the legislation before parliament is changed, this will all be illegal next year, and those taking part will be liable for serious penalties.

McGrath, it won't be illegal, it will require a licence. The only person who will get in trouble would be the licencee if s/he doesn't have a PEL. Maybe the pubs in question already have one?

Don't get me wrong, I fully support the campaign, but inaccurate scaremongering is hardly helpful.

Only if the premises are not licensed. Do you know which of the "carols" pubs around Sheffield are licensed at present for singing and dancing, and which are not? I don't.

I was at the Blue Ball, Worrall last Sunday. Like the other pubs esp. The Royal at Dungworth, the first word that comes to mind is SARDINES, so how that works with capacity numbers, I'll never know. But its just so ELECTRIC! (Don't expect to try going to the loo!)

Under the law at present the licensee is liable, unless he or she has a Public Entertainment Licence covering this, and so are "the organisers" - but the singers aren't. Under the "reform" the singers would be committing an offence as well, and be liable to the same penalties.

Most places do not have licences to cover this kind of thing, and probably won't in the future. (Remember it's not just pubs.) So long as the local authorities turn a blind eye nothing untoward happens. All it takes is a bloody minded jobsworth or councillor, and there are a fair number of them about.

Just because something is traditional is no protection. Out in Dorset this week a local council official week moved in and stopped mummers from performing in two pubs in Cerne Abbas. I bet the people involved would have dismissed any suggestion that anything like that could happen as paranoid rubbish. Until it happened.
