Subject: Heard of The Mammals? From: Dunkle Date: 18 Dec 02 - 12:47 PM The Philadelphia Folk Song society had this group come and sing a week or so ago - Good musicians, lots of energy - very accomplished trio. I did a search to see if anyone had brought them up yet here at Mudcat; apparently not. They've got music in their genes, one being a Seeger, another an Unger...There's a website at www.themammals.net that you might check out. And go see them if they play somewhere near you! Don |

Subject: RE: Heard of The Mammals? From: Bev and Jerry Date: 18 Dec 02 - 05:11 PM Heard them on the radio the other day and it prompted us to e-mail the DJ and compliment him on his good taste (especially in comparison to the previous DJ for this program). Bev and Jerry |
Subject: RE: Heard of The Mammals? From: EBarnacle1 Date: 19 Dec 02 - 12:05 AM Tao and Pete will be singing [with others] at the Beacon Sloop Club Pot Luck this Friday night from 8PM until 10. Tao originally started singing just to "keep Grampa happy." Then he began to enjoy it. The rest is history. He organized the Mammals on his own. They perform regularly at the Great Hudson River Revival and are already booked for the 2003 Festival. |
Subject: RE: Heard of The Mammals? From: Mark Cohen Date: 19 Dec 02 - 12:09 AM I heard an extended interview/studio concert with them on FolkScene, back when it was archived online. I loved FolkScene, especially since here in the middle of the Pacific it's hard to find folk music on the radio. I hope it comes back in archived online format soon. Aloha, Mark |
Subject: RE: Heard of The Mammals? From: michaelr Date: 19 Dec 02 - 01:42 AM The Mammals are important because they are part of the NEW folk generation, along with people like Eliza Carthy, Kate Rusby, and the late, lamented Jeff Buckley. They carry on our torch, and make this music "cool" to people in their twenties -- which most of us would have a hard time accomplishing. "Folk music is not a pickle -- it doesn't need to be preserved". Who said that? Cheers, Michael |
Subject: RE: Heard of The Mammals? From: GUEST,Davetnova Date: 19 Dec 02 - 08:03 AM The mammals appear semi-regularly on Jay and Molly Unger's Dancing on the air radio show which is archived www.dancingontheair.com/ |
Subject: RE: Heard of The Mammals? From: EBarnacle1 Date: 29 Mar 03 - 01:48 AM I had it confirmed to me today that the Mammals will be at the Great Hudson River Revival on June 21 and 22. |
Subject: RE: Heard of The Mammals? From: Mark Cohen Date: 29 Mar 03 - 03:40 AM Davetnova, thanks so much for telling us about "Dancing on the Air"--what a wonderful show! I haven't heard Jay and Molly since they played at the Harvest Moon contradance festival in Santa Barbara in 1990. That was a week or two before I met my ex-wife...but that wasn't their fault! By the way, here's a corrected link (the "a href" command needs the whole "http://" URL, even if your browser doesn't): Dancing on the Air Aloha, Mark |
Subject: RE: Heard of The Mammals? From: Bev and Jerry Date: 22 Feb 04 - 12:10 AM Saw these guys last night in one of the best concerts we have ever been to. Now they are five having added a bass and drums. They did a lot of old timey fiddle tunes and at least two Child ballads along with some stuff they wrote. The style is definely geared toward younger audiences but we loved what they did with the traditional material. Refreshing. All five are outstanding musicians and when Mike, Ruth and Tao sing in three part harmony it can take your breath away. If they play anywhere near where you are, drop everything and go see them. Subject: RE: Heard of The Mammals? From: SmokinBill Date: 22 Feb 04 - 12:25 AM I had a great time this summer at Ashokan, where Ruth, Mike, Tao and Pierce of The Mammals were among the instructors. They play a great selection of traditional and original material, and they have considerably more energy and stage presence than your average old-timey string band. Bands like The Mammals are subverting the pop culture one fiddle tune at a time, and the world is a better place for it. I have a link to their Web site on my site, Smokin' Bill's Digital Depot. Look for their "Trad is Rad" logo. I also recommend an up-and-coming string band called Old Crow Medicine Show. |
Subject: RE: Heard of The Mammals? From: GUEST,SmokinBill Date: 23 Feb 04 - 03:07 AM I'd also recommend Foghorn Stringband from Portland, Oregon. Here's a link: Foghorn Stringband Smokin' Bill |
Subject: RE: Heard of The Mammals? From: GLoux Date: 23 Feb 04 - 12:57 PM Agreement on the recommendation for Foghorn Stringband. Saw them last month in Newark, Delaware, touring with Dirk Powell and Riley Baugus...their CD is great and they are on one track on Dirk's latest CD. Since we're plugging young old-time music (thread creep?) I've got to mention Rayna Gellert, too...awesome fiddler... -Greg |
Subject: RE: Heard of The Mammals? From: Mark Ross Date: 23 Feb 04 - 02:01 PM Got to hear them(The Mammals)here in Eugene, Oregon the other week, incredible, tight band. Funny too. Brendan Phillips(Utah's son)was road managing for them and playing musical saw on Lady Margaret. I lopok forward to seeing them again. Mark Ross |
Subject: RE: Heard of The Mammals? From: Bev and Jerry Date: 24 Feb 04 - 12:05 AM We didn't figure out who Brendan was. No one said who his dad is so we didn't connect it. Anyway, we saw him saw on Lady M., too. Bev and Jerry |
