Subject: Lyr Add: I STAND ALONE (Steve Perry)
From: katlaughing
Date: 21 Dec 02 - 02:49 PM

Is it maybe this one:

I STAND ALONE
(Steve Perry)

Like every tree stands on its own
Reaching for the sky, I stand alone.
I share my world with no one else.
All by myself, I stand alone.

I know the sound of each rock and stone
And I embrace what others feel.
You are not to roam in this forgotten place.
Just the likes of me, you're welcome here.

Everything breathes and I know each breath.
For me, it means life; for others, it's death.
It's perfectly balanced, perfectly planned,
More than enough for this man.

Like every tree stands on its own
Reaching for the sky, I stand alone.
I share my world with no one else.
All by myself, I stand alone.

I've seen your world with these very eyes.
Don't come any closer. Don't even try.
I've felt all the pain and heard all the lies,
But in my world, there's no compromise.

Like every tree stands on its own
Reaching for the sky, I stand alone.
I share my world with no one else.
All by myself, I stand alone.

probably not--it is a blugrass one
with some lines like "in a storm
trees support each other" and a
tree by itself gets hit harder by the storms..
not exact quites....but those ideas....
with images of a grove of trees....
thanks for sending that one, though.
it sounds good too.'
just feeling sort of sloitary this season
looking for a grove to lean on!!

Searching for the phrase "trees support each other" I found no lyrics, but some other interesting stuff, e.g. this quote from a forestry site:
Interior spruce, when growing on wet sites, does not always work very well with partial cutting. Because the roots are shallower in wet areas, and the trees support each other, spruce can suffer wind-throw when thinned too much. We are also trying small patch cuts in these stands to mitigate the tendency towards blowdown...."
Or this quote from a Woodinville, WA newspaper:
[The city planner] also explained that the City wants notification whenever someone is planning to cut a tree down. She cites a recent example of a group of trees which were cut down, leaving no wind barrier for the trees behind them. She explains that trees support each other and when the wind blows, there's a domino effect if there isn't a barrier to hold them. In the recent incident, the wind plunged several trees to the ground, having had its barrier suddenly removed.
There were also several sermons and essays that used the tree analogy to illustrate why people ought to help one another, such as this quote from the Atlanta Business Chronicle:
Hope nurtures an atmosphere of trust, loyalty and creativity. The very name connotes a sense of community, for the company is named after a tree that is the largest organism in the world. An aspen may look like a single tree, but underneath the surface, the roots form a complex network, so the trees support each other. Hope extends the metaphor to Aspen Productions: "Each individual employee is supported by the entire company."
It's not too surprising that someone would develop this idea into a song.

"A Tree That Stands Alone" was recorded by The Country Gentlemen on their 1963 album "Return Engagement". It has been reissued as a CD. Still looking for lyrics, sound files, etc.

I've listened to a couple of sound samples, and transcribed this:

…and there'll be no one close by to lean on.
When you stand apart from all the crowd,
You'll have much broader vision all around,
And you won't tend to break when troubles come,
If down deep you know your heart is sound.

[CHORUS?] A tree that stands alone cannot hide from wind and storm,
But its roots have room to grow, and its branches of beauty unfold.

If you're bound to live your life alone,
Stand your ground and stand oak-tree strong….
