Subject: Tech: What's the 'd' for on long threads? From: GUEST Date: 01 Jan 03 - 03:48 AM Notice that all threads over 50 messages now have a "d" option in addition to the 'read 50 a time' one. What is it, and what difference does it make? Thanks |

Subject: RE: Tech: What's the 'd' for on long threads? From: Ebbie Date: 01 Jan 03 - 04:15 AM I believe it presents the thread last post first. Handy- I scroll down to where I last read it and work my way upward. |

Subject: RE: Tech: What's the 'd' for on long threads? From: GUEST Date: 01 Jan 03 - 04:22 AM Thanks, Ebbie It would, indeed seem to be that. And it is handy. Why Max chooses to implement such changes without telling his 'customers' is beyond me. Just his way, I suppose. |

Subject: RE: Tech: What's the 'd' for on long threads? From: nutty Date: 01 Jan 03 - 05:33 AM This was actually done at the suggestion of a mudcatter ..... a very sensible one, that Max has taken on board, for the benefit of those people with old or low powered machines. |

Subject: RE: Tech: What's the 'd' for on long threads? From: GUEST Date: 01 Jan 03 - 08:41 AM It is better to inform users of changes (but maybe an update came unexpectedly with the big crash) but where Max demonstrates willingness and ability to take on board ideas to benifit certain users and implement these in a reasonable time scale, praise, not criticism should be given. |

Subject: RE: Tech: What's the 'd' for on long threads? From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 01 Jan 03 - 10:51 AM If you type anything into the "filter" box and hit "refresh", you'll see this message: * Click on the linked "Messages" numbers to view the thread split into pages (click "d" for chronologically descending). Why it only appears when using "filter" is a riddle that only Max can answer. Bruce |

Subject: RE: Tech: What's the 'd' for on long threads? From: Stilly River Sage Date: 01 Jan 03 - 11:15 AM Guest, I figured it out all by myself by testing it a few times. The powers of observation are useful; the complaint you posted demonstrates one of your shortcomings, perhaps? I don't care to read threads in that order, but it doesn't merit a whiney thread. If things are a little quiet around your establishment this morning go check out Google News. There, you might find (if it's still up) that "D" stands for "Dumbledore" and it looks like Michael Gambon has been pegged to play him in the next film. SRS |

Subject: RE: Tech: What's the 'd' for on long threads? From: SINSULL Date: 01 Jan 03 - 11:22 AM Happy New Year everyone. Oh good. I would have been disappointed (as would Max, I am sure) if we hadn't started off the new year with a bitching thread. Yeah! How dare anyone improve things around here and not warn us? Where's that rope, Spaw? New or not, I am going to go hang myself. First Iraq; then North Korea; now a f**king "d"! What's the use of going on? Of course, I have already broken my New Year's resolution about not responding to flamers. Some things never change. |

Subject: RE: Tech: What's the 'd' for on long threads? From: nutty Date: 01 Jan 03 - 11:25 AM You can do it for any thread if you click on the blue sort descending at the top of the page. The advantage of being able to do it on a split thread means you can read the new postings without cluttering up your computer with postings you have already read. |

Subject: RE: Tech: What's the 'd' for on long threads? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 01 Jan 03 - 11:33 AM What's wrong with "suck it and see"? One push on the "d" and it is pretty obvious what it does, and it's a nice little New Year's Present to us all. Some people... |

Subject: RE: Tech: What's the 'd' for on long threads? From: Tyghress Date: 01 Jan 03 - 01:01 PM I thought they tapped McKellan for Dumbledore. . .::returning to befuddled reading of overreactions:: |

Subject: RE: Tech: What's the 'd' for on long threads? From: Ebbie Date: 01 Jan 03 - 01:54 PM Speaking of over-reacting! Just about everybody on this thread! I took it as a valid if idle question asked at an idle moment- the sort of thing that I - and I suspect, a few others on this earth- have done once or twice in my life. A question that pops up in one's head, not of great moment but valid nonetheless. |

Subject: RE: Tech: What's the 'd' for on long threads? From: GUEST Date: 01 Jan 03 - 02:10 PM Thank you Ebbie, I was only asking. Shame I got beat up for doing so... |

Subject: RE: Tech: What's the 'd' for on long threads? From: Big Mick Date: 01 Jan 03 - 03:52 PM That's because you choose to use GUEST, instead of a screen name. Hence all three postings from GUEST seemed to come from the same person. Each of the three GUEST postings are from different folks. You folks always defend your GUEST status, quit snivelling when it works against you. And I did think your original question was valid, but would have been better posted in the HELP section. Mick |

Subject: RE: Tech: What's the 'd' for on long threads? From: SINSULL Date: 01 Jan 03 - 04:19 PM The question is valid although clicking on the "d" would probably have answered it. The criticism of Max is the usual crap. I stand by my response. Now lets move on to who among us is part of the inner clique and automatically comes to Max's defense at every opportunity. Might as well cover both subjects in one thread and save space. SINS, whose NYE resolution is shot to hell. |

Subject: RE: Tech: What's the 'd' for on long threads? From: GUEST Date: 01 Jan 03 - 04:51 PM Where was the criticism of Max please? Nowhere. You're chasing ghosts SINSULL. Whatever makes you happy, I guess... |

Subject: RE: Tech: What's the 'd' for on long threads? From: Liz the Squeak Date: 01 Jan 03 - 06:12 PM The implied criticism of Max was that he'd implemented a change without asking our permission or warning us it was going to happen... Like he needs to ask us what to do with his site...... LTS |

Subject: RE: Tech: What's the 'd' for on long threads? From: My guru always said Date: 01 Jan 03 - 06:43 PM I was delighted to find Max's New Year present to us, it saves me at least one turn of the page and on my slow home machine that means a lot! Thanks Max! |

Subject: RE: Tech: What's the 'd' for on long threads? From: Stilly River Sage Date: 01 Jan 03 - 10:26 PM It wasn't the original question. Nothing wrong with that. It was the smart-aleck response of "Why Max chooses to implement such changes without telling his 'customers' is beyond me. Just his way, I suppose" that set up a few backs. For someone who considers him/herself a customer without bothering to join, there is little tolerance for your complaints. Max is a resource that many of us are daily in awe of. Without his computers on his dining room table (wherever that may be these days) there would be no Mudcat. Simple as that. And it's quite a community, something he can be very proud to have nurtured by providing this forum. SRS |

Subject: RE: Tech: What's the 'd' for on long threads? From: Nancy King Date: 01 Jan 03 - 10:58 PM In fact, the explanation of the "d" is right at the bottom of the threads page, just below "Mudcat time." It says, " * Click on the linked "Messages" numbers to view the thread split into pages (click "d" for chronologically descending)." Thanks, Max! Nancy |

Subject: RE: Tech: What's the 'd' for on long threads? From: Joe Offer Date: 02 Jan 03 - 02:25 AM Why Max chooses to implement such changes without telling his 'customers' is beyond me. Just his way, I suppose. Well, actually, it's my job to post an explanation in the FAQ (if things need explanation), but I was off at Camp Harmony making music and washing dishes. Nancy's right, though - there's an explanation right down at the bottom of the threads page, down next to the asterisk. We decided long ago that we were not going to make an effort to explain every single feature we add to Mudcat - we'll explain the complicated and essential ones and answer any questions people ask, but we encourage people to explore every link and find things out for themselves. We have all sorts of treasures and surprises we haven't explained, and we've decided to let people have the pleasure of discovery. We also decided that it may have been a mistake to hold off on all the changes for so long, and then to release them all at once. People got impatient waiting for us to fulfill our promise of the "new Mudcat." It was worth waiting for, but we could have given people many of the new features earlier. In the future, expect to see little changes like the "d" links. They may appear for a time and then disappear, depending on how effective they are. Play with them when you see them, and let us know what you think of them. Feel free to start a thread to discuss innovations you find. -Joe Offer- |
