Subject: BS: who's coming to Rainycamp USA in Feb From: mg Date: 01 Jan 03 - 05:21 PM OK..time for Rainycamp. I actually have my check in and I think I got the right weekend for this but I won't actually say what it is for fear of screwing up like I did at Sasamat. Anyway, first or second weekend of Feb (I think the second) outside Seattle about 30 miles, near Carnation, home of content cows. A pleasant camp, no great natural wonders or anything, but a nice lodge and cabins. Usually about 80 people, and the music is quite good. Price is around $60 and food is good for a camp. You can do a google search under Seattle and Rainy Camp (it really should be one word) but they might have it under two. Should be lots of Mudcatters there....probably OK to get to by public transportation (more or less..to the vicinity anyway) during the day but I doubt if buses run into the evening. But I imagine there are carpools of some sort. Speaking of which, I can get to either Kelso or Olympia..if I go all the way to Seattle it will be too late in the evening to hook up rides. Anyone from Portland able to pick me up in either Kelso or Olympia? mg |

Subject: RE: who's coming to Rainycamp USA in Feb From: Genie Date: 01 Jan 03 - 09:11 PM I'm already signed up and paid up, Mary. Can carpool (ride or drive) with others coming from the Seattle area if anyone's interested. Genie |

Subject: RE: who's coming to Rainycamp USA in Feb From: reggie miles Date: 06 Jan 03 - 02:07 PM I hope I can go this year. I never know what my finances will allow for certain. I live near enough that I wouldn't have to stay on sight. Is there a day fee for those who do not need to take advatage of the cabins? |

Subject: RE: who's coming to Rainycamp USA in Feb From: mg Date: 06 Jan 03 - 03:17 PM I don't think there is and this is something that really bugs me. I take a proprietory interest in this camp since I started it. I think that is really inconsiderate of people's needs and any problems with meal planning etc. can be circumvented by telling people to bring their own food and not eating the camp food. mg |

Subject: RE: who's coming to Rainycamp USA in Feb From: Genie Date: 08 Jan 03 - 10:48 PM Here's the info at SFS website: http://www.seafolklore.org/rainy.html I'd suggest contacting Jean Smith if you have requests for unusual situations like Reggie's. I think a certain fee has to be paid to cover the camp's insurance, even if you're not staying overnight or being fed. Beyond that, I don't understand why there can't be reduced fees for "day singers." But Jean would know. Genie |

Subject: RE: who's coming to Rainycamp USA in Feb From: sharyn Date: 08 Jan 03 - 11:38 PM Maybe I'll do the crazy thing and come to this one, too -- does anyone know if they can handle last-minute registrations (I see that the deadline is Friday the 10th)? What time do things start on Friday night? And how late could I arrive in Seattle and expect to get a ride to camp? If it doesn't work I'll come next year, which I was planning to do anyway. |

Subject: RE: who's coming to Rainycamp USA in Feb From: mg Date: 09 Jan 03 - 01:40 AM can't say..but I would contact Suzi McA. She lives right at the airport and usually comes. B.C. me your email and I'll give you hers. (mgarvey@pacifier.com) I'm sort of wondering the same thing..from Long Beach are not great. I might get a ride to Olympia. I'm going to check and see how close the county buses get, and most importantly, how late they run. mg |

Subject: RE: who's coming to Rainycamp USA in Feb From: mg Date: 09 Jan 03 - 01:50 AM By the way, if anyone should happen to have an extra bow for a fiddle..mine is unplayable at this time..the bow. I might be able to bring my fiddle..just don't have a bow. Only if it is an old raggedy one of course. or I could bring mine and hope that a horse with a big tail shows up and I could persuade him to let me have some hairs.. Guess I can't bring the accordian..(was that a sigh of relief....well, you haven't heard me on the fiddle in a while..) mg |

Subject: RE: who's coming to Rainycamp USA in Feb From: Stewart Date: 09 Jan 03 - 12:07 PM Hi Mary, I'll put an extra bow in my fiddle case for you. See you then. Cheers, S. in Seattle |

Subject: RE: who's coming to Rainycamp USA in Feb From: mg Date: 09 Jan 03 - 12:22 PM Oh thanks..I think you did last year too but I didn't bring the fiddle. It is an authentic Cape Breton fiddle that I bought in a dirty books shop..long story...It is a shame it belongs to someone like me who will never truly play it like it was meant to be played..mg |

Subject: RE: who's coming to Rainycamp USA in Feb From: Don Firth Date: 09 Jan 03 - 12:45 PM I have serious doubts that I will be able to come, although there is an off-chance that I might be able to make it for part of a day, so I, too, am interested in a day rate. Big question:-- Is the area (buildings, rest rooms, etc.) wheelchair accessible? Don Firth |

Subject: RE: who's coming to Rainycamp USA in Feb From: mg Date: 09 Jan 03 - 10:37 PM do you need wider doors? I think you should call Jean at 747-7665 if I remember correctly. I say show up, be prepared to kick in a few bucks for overhead and just try and let them throw you out (if you can work out the bathroom stuff). The main lodge has a bathroom but it would have standard stalls etc. It might have a step or two but nothing that we couldn't get you up and over. There are bathrooms in a separate building and I think some of the cabins have them too... I am wondering if there is anything better in the vicinity like a restaurant ...there is a little one down the road...someone would know the name. mg |

Subject: RE: who's coming to Rainycamp USA in Feb From: sharyn Date: 23 Jan 03 - 12:53 PM I'm not going to make it this year. I do have to work sometimes. I'll come next year if humanly possible. I will be at Singtime Frolics and Folklife in 2003 and Jon Bartlett's ballad thing in Vancouver. |

Subject: RE: who's coming to Rainycamp USA in Feb From: Genie Date: 24 Jan 03 - 03:22 PM Sorry you can't make Rainy Camp, sharyn, but look forward to seeing you at Singtime (and at Folklife, if I know how to find you in the crowds!). Genie |

Subject: RE: who's coming to Rainycamp USA in Feb From: mg Date: 05 Feb 03 - 02:00 AM OK...I have made my logistical arrangements. It is just as easy to get to Europe from here as it is to get to Seattle and forget about Portland. Anyway, we (the famous cookie lady from Sunnycamp) and I are going to rent a car and drive up Friday. Cool..I get to meet her in the Wet Dog Cafe...with a beautiful view of the Columbia River. I am not going to travel light this time. I am going to bring everything my heart desires. My own shampoo. My accordian and my fiddle. My tent in case I want to commune with nature (I hate how hot people turn those cabins up). My own food for my high-protein diet. A full size towel. Heck, I'll throw in some moisturizer. I wish I had a really good tape recorder. I have a pretty good one but I can't find it. If anyone has one and wants to tape stuff, guaranteed to be good stuff. And you just never know these days when something will be your last time somewhere.. |

Subject: RE: who's coming to Rainycamp USA in Feb From: Genie Date: 05 Feb 03 - 02:26 AM Well.Mary, I have a small 4-track tape recorder and a mic with mic stand. I'm thinking of bringing them. Never tried the 4-track except for home recording, but I think it'd work. The devil is in the details of where to position the mic, I think. Glad you're coming. [We can argue about Wendell Berry and world views. ;-)] Genie |
