WHAT SHALL WE DO WITH THEM!

The sending of Christmas cards is a wonderful custom.

I send them out to everyone-no exceptions!
I generally do my own artwork- this year a coke a cola santa in a guy fawkes chair setting with the slogan:
"what shall we do with him"
inside - we shall let you decide.

It is still not expensive to send christmas cards. If you make your own it can be a folded over piece of paper....
People cite expense, relative ease of communicating via phone and e.mail etc....
Not good excuses!
Christmas cards are more than communication and greetings. I enjoy them for their art. I have them hung up on a ribbon in the club basement pub of my house. They brighten the place up. I also think of the sender when I look at them.

I am tired of letting the bah humbug anti christmas card louts prevail. Its like any other traditional custom. It now needs protection from morons.

I suggest the design of a stamp or something that can go on christmas cards sent to those who refuse to take part.
Something like a santa uncle sam figure.

pointing and saying: I want you to send christmas cards!

Or perhaps a little package from the horse barn...

Anyone have any suggestions for the campaign?

For the last ten years, staff at the school I work in have made a contribution to charity in lieu of sending each other Christmas Cards. It is called the "Bah Humbug Appeal". In 2002 we sent £115 to the North of England Childrens Cancer Research Fund. In previous years it has been sent to Nepal, Zambia, our local Air Ambulance and many other deserving causes. It makes us feel good and doesn't add to the recycling mountain!

I guess I win the box of manure prize this year. I'm sorry! I only sent about a 1/4 of my list out this year. I'm guilty, I'm lazy, I'm going to do better next year, I promise!
Other than that I agree with you on making cards #1 Peasant. I have a lot of fun doing that also. That's one of the reasons I wanted a computer is the creative side to it. I have a couple different programs that allow me to do all kinds of wild things. (Print artist and adobe photo deluxe)
Problem is I don't have a scanner yet to really do what I want with them. Sorry was that a thread drift??

Well, if my cards get out before Lent begins I'm still in the right litergical season.... One year we sent Easter Bunny cards when we missed even that dead line. As long as I find a way to keep in touch with folks, I don't care how/when it happens...

We sent out 150 Christmas cards, so we obviously enjoy doing it. We also reached out to friends by phone who would find receiving a card meaningless. We particularly like to remember people who are in nursing homes or who are shut in and have very few (or no) living family members to remember them. That said, I don't think you should do ANYTHING (if we're into all caps) that you don't believe in. There are people who would appreciate hearing from you any time of year, and many of them would prefer a phone call or a visit... or an e-mail when they really need it, not on a pre-chosen day of the year. If you're really thinking of others, start with what they believe and what would lift them.

I'm relieved to finally have it confirmed that I'm not a moron, Kendall..

-cards are simply not that expensive....
-often cards maintain the social safety net of contact and this eventually helps.

I have been thinking about it...
Possibly those not sending out cards to whom you have sent cards should be enrolled in an infinite mailing list tree-chain letter with the only way to have their name removed would be to send christmas cards to all of the members of the tree.

The proper name for those not supporting tradition.....just pick one and wear it. Has nothing to do with me. Everything to do with the god of tradition. I can not claim to be that god....but I know what makes it happy!

Get a piece of paper draw something festive on it, fold over in half staple address and put a stamp on it....go for it!

In lieu of Christmas, I ask every prospective sender to send me $10.00. This makes the sending a more personal thing and therefore more enjoyable for the sender as well as the for the recipient (me!)

But old traditions are hard to replace with new traditions. People have a hard time with changes. However, I am a persistent cuss, and , though I have made no converts in my last twenty years of diligent effort, I will continue to lobby for the creation of this new tradition.

Bobert and Jerry sent me a card. I thank them greatly for this. However, after they read this post, they will then know what I expect next Christmas!!!

Personally, Conrad, I do not like receiving Christmas cards, per se.

If you want to send me a year-end letter telling me about how your life is going, that's another kettle of fish entirely. That's a letter, not just a Christmas Card.

But it's not the folded piece of paper and pretty picture that appeals to me at all. In fact, I dread getting a card that has nothing inside but "Dear ____, happy holidays" (or whatever). "Love, _____". All that tells me is that I'm a name on someone's list, and that the calender is creeping up on a certain date. Whoop-de-doo. I'd rather know that the life of another tree had been spared.

If you like sending homemade cards, and sharing yourself with your friends and family through that medium, I'm happy for you. But there are more than one way to celebrate the love of people in our lives, and the most loving generous way is to give them what they'd each want and need, not to impose what you want to give onto them.

Now that I know you like getting pretty cards, if we ever become friends, I'll be sure to send you one. But, unlike you, I don't have a place to display them, and as I use a wheelchair, it is sometimes diffecult for me to get to the mailbox and sort out the junk mail from the cards and letters. So I'd prefer an e-mail, thank you (if you want to draw me a picture, scan it and send it as a file attactment).

Just realized - this is first Christmas in many years that I did not get one of those insipid, printed on green paper tomes about how successful the brilliant children are,Dad's promotion, Mom's trophy for best cherry pie, etc.- the real world version of SPAM. I send out just a handful of New Year cards to very close friends with pictures and/or personal write-up.
Every greeting card, including Christmas, should have a Please Recycle notice on it.

Smallpiper, a wee question. Can "Ta" mean goodbye as well as thanks? Seems I've heard it that way on TV.

In an older house we bought, we found about 300 postcards, from about 1905-1910, which I have put into an album. A number of them are Christmas picture postcards. These seem to have been replaced by the card-in-an-envelope type.
At a Hallmark shop, I was told that the number of Christmas cards has been going down every year, along with Easter cards, although other types (birthday, get-well, drop dead) etc., are holding steady. I wonder how much longer Christmas cards will continue.

I have been making my own Christmas cards since the 60's. A girlfriend's mother used to find this somehow infra-dig or cheap as she put it. The stupidity was when she showed me the box she bought and only 6 pence a card. I didn't even bother to point out that my individually crafted had not only the personanl touch but the thought was not the price and I thought about the recipient as I made each one. Such concepts were lost on her generation who HAD make things out of poverty. 'sides which how could I explain that they wer more expensive - I was profligate and cheap at the same time. The girlfriend is of course an ex (long since).
Now that I do them on a PC they are cheaper but more professional, & I do feel I have lost something. The jokes are worse too!

Nigerian scam artists need love too. Think of how lonely it gets sitting in some seedy apartment in Lagos, churning out thousands and thousands of emails to people who are too hardhearted to even respond to a generous offer to share $30 million dollars for a few simple formalities. Think of the pain of countless rejections! Think of the despair and bereftitude in Nigeria!

So I say, show some interest in what they have to offer, ask how you can help, what you can do, whom you should contact...get all the info...and then send 'em a penny (a nice, bright, shiny one) along with an autographed picture of William Shatner jumping rope in the nude, with Conrad holding one end of the rope and Dubya holding the other. (Okay, Spaw? How's that?)

It's time we brought a little Christmas spirit to Nigeria. You can make it retroactive to 2002 or just wait till next year, assuming Dubya has not invaded Nigeria by then in search of "terrorists" or weapons of mass destruction...
