My grandmother used to sing a lullaby to us but I can only remember a part and wonder if anyone knows its origins and/or more words

Nutty is right. My mum used to sing this to us. I did have the sheet music but don't think I have it now. The version I know is slightly different, in that the penultimate line is 'Close your eyes and go to sleep'
The words of the verse would not now be PC

This is the only song that I ever learned in the classic traditional manner----having it passed down to me in my family. I will never forget my grandmother singing me to sleep (or trying to) with this song. She passed away around 1955. A great lady whose memory I will always cherish. And a nice song too.

Can you tell me where please, Ard Macha? I did an online search a while ago of PR's recordings, looking for this very song, and couldn't find it.

My parents sang it to me, and I in turn sang it (and still on occasion, sing it) to my children.

On the CD Paul sings lulla with a short a (as in dull) and my baby as written.
Other versions I've heard use loola and ma babby.

Just tracked down the Paul Robson version and listened to it. Strange that I remember the verses but did not associate them with the chorus - perhaps I used to fall asleep in between!

My Grandmother used to sing it to my Mother and to my Uncle and Auntie when they were children. She had a beautiful voice and I always begged her to sing it to me. Like someone else, I remember a different version of the song.
Instead of: to your mammys arms come creeping
             and soon you'll be a peeping
I was taught: through your window, moonlight comes creeping
               and soon you'll be a sleeping.
Does anyone else remember this version? Or is that just me?

Thanks for the lyrics to the song that my dear ole dad used to sing to me when i was wee. Now i have another hardie... Does anybody know who sang and what this lullabye is called...another that i remember from many years ago.

I always have sung "Bye Bye Blackbird" and "Summertime" to my now 7- and 9-year-old girls, as my mother did to me. Usually, they're out by the end of "Summertime," which always comes second. If not, I hum a couple more verses. When they're REALLY wound up, I leave them with a Mills Brothers CD playing.

I had my son, on try No. 4, 19 months ago. I started singing "Curly Headed Baby" to him when he was very little, but couldn't get the lyrics down. This has renewed my commitment to learn them. I have a version by Paul Robeson as a point of reference.


I'd love to hear the tune to "Old Backyard." If there's nothing online, I'd love for someone to call and sing it into my voice mail. Let me know if there's a willing party.

Anyone have some other good, lost lullabies?

"My Curly-Headed Baby" was also my lullaby sung to me both by my mother and my grandmother. It has had an amazing effect on me to think about it again after all these years when I have not even thought about it.

When it was sung to my younger brother - five years younger than me - I can remember both mum and granny telling me that they they had learned it from Paul Robeson and that he was a very fine and important man and that he helped the miners - two of my uncles had been miners before being killed in the First World War. It was not just that he was a fine entertainer and was in a number of prominent British-produced films in the '30s and '40s but I'm not sure that it is widely known now what an important political figure he was in Britain, during those years.

My mum used to sing this to me and I have sung it to all my six children along with Goodnight Mr Elephant and Peek a Boo I see you hiding there as her mother had sung them to her.

My Mum died 32 years ago. Last night I sang them all to her sister my aunt as she lay seriously ill in hospital. Then i came home and sang them again to my 10 month old grandson as he fell asleep in my arms.

How lovely to find google can reveal to me others who love this song - and know all the words. Mummy sang the babby version with the un PC words coon and nigger. But to me as a little white child they were beautiful words, tender, loving and exotic.

Well, I was surprised. I left Mudcat just now to google this, which my Dad sang to me (My Mum sang Golden Slumbers), only to get instantly back here again.
I was wondering how to make it singable.

I have recently been looking up songs in an old community song book - often in versions which eliminate any obvious mention of sexual congress - but it was really weird to see the n word used so blithely, not to mention the slaves regretting that Massa's in de cold cold ground.

This lullaby is so good it needs saving though.

Robeson sang to the people of Clacton from the balcony of a hotel later to be the college I attended - but they never told us that. My family respected him, though not miners, just Left Book Club readers.

This summer I was at a singing camp in Ireland. One night we gathered to sing lullabyes, and heard many lovely ones from different parts of the world. I sang the chorus to this one, which I had heard from my mother and which I sang to each of my five children. To our amazement, a women from Ireland sang the same song, with almost identical lyrics and tune. We couldn't figure out how each of us knew the same lullabye. When I got home I Googled it and found this thread. My mother was a great jazz, blues and spiritual lover, and I have to think she heard Paul Robeson's version.

The Online 78rpm Discographical Project says LITTLE CURLY HEAD IN A HIGH CHAIR was recorded by Ben Bernie & His Orchestra, on 3/28/1940, and released as a 78-rpm record, Conqueror 9461.

Another discography indicates that Gracie Fields also recorded it in 1940.

The title is usually given as LITTLE CURLY HAIR IN A HIGH CHAIR. Under that title, it was recorded by Ben Bernie (on the Vocalion label), Eddie Cantor, Jimmy Dorsey, Sammy Kaye, Johnny Messner, and Fats Waller—all around the same time in 1940. Helen O'Connell also recorded it, but I was unable to find the date.

The Red Hot Jazz Archive has the recording by Fats Waller: Click to play.

It was used in the 1940 MGM film "Forty Little Mothers," directed by Busby Berkeley, and starring Eddie Cantor. IMDb.com gives this info:

I also remember this song from my childhood when my mother used to sing it to me and I discovered the other day that my now 95 year old aunt used to sing it to her daughter. My mother was impressed by Paul Robeson as a singer and a human being. I also have his autograph as Mom used to be a avid theatre goer and was friends with Bebe Daniels and Ben Lyon (of radio and TV Life with the Lyons anyone remember??). She collected autographs of many of the stars she saw in those days. I think the stars were more available and quite easy to meet if you waited at the stage doors etc.    Pat K

My mum used to sing Curly-headed Baby to me when I was sick and couldn't sleep as a child, and to my boys when they were little before she passed away in 1991.

She also used to sing another lullaby but I don't know the name of the song. It had very politically incorrect lyrics that went something like:

Little Piccaninny in your cosy bed of bark
Mama lubra watches by
While the stars are in the sky
See the sun is setting o'er the mountains in the west.
Soon the sunshine you will see
Little aborigine.

I havent heard the lyrics for 40 years so not 100% certain of them.
