Subject: BS: Maths forumla for happiness! From: smallpiper Date: 18 Jan 03 - 10:37 AM I received this in a newsletter from a counselling organisation interesting I wonder what is next! Psychologist identifies formula for happiness: An occupational psychologist claims to have reduced the search for happiness to a mathematical formula: P+(5E)+(3H). To reach a state of contentment you need personal traits (P) such as outlook on life, resilience and adaptability, according to Carol Rothwell, an occupational psychologist and life coach for Thomson, the holiday company. Added to this, you must fulfil "existence needs" (E) such as health, money and friends and "higher order needs" (H) such as sense of humour, ambitions and self-esteem. (The Times 06/01/03; p.6) |

From: CapriUni Date: 18 Jan 03 - 08:03 PM My own highschool maths teacher gave us this formula for satisfaction, which is a close cousin to happiness: S = E/R Or: "Satisfaction equals Expection devided by Reality" For example, if you expect a movie you're going to see to merit two stars, and it does merit two stars (In your opinion), then you come away with a Satisfaction level of 1: par for the course. If the movie merits 3 stars or even 4, then you'll be very satisfied, and give it a rave review... This works for just about everything, I've found... even though the ratings we give things are more subconscious than film reviews in the paper... |
