Scots Minstrelsie: A National Monument of Scottish Song (in 6 volumes; Edited and Arranged by John Greig, 1893) can be seen HERE at the Electric Scotland site. The work is now in progress (volume 1 and half of volume 2 are completed). Notes in addition to scores are often helpful.

That will be useful; thanks for the alert. Greig was also involved with the overlapping British Minstrelsie set, also in six volumes; though the sixth doesn't seem to turn up as often as the others.

How does this relate to the 8-volume "Greig-Duncan" Folk Song Collection"?

I have the complete set of 6 volumes with illustrations by Michael Brown - are these worth anything for insurance purposes?

Thanks

I have 6 volumes of Scots Minstrelsie Edited & Arranged by John Greig.
However, the publisher is The Caxton Publishing Co. London. Any idea what date this edition was published?

I don't think that any editions carry dates (1900 is an estimate). Suspect that it was published more or less simultaneously by Jack in Edinburgh and Caxton in London.

A look at COPAC suggests that the first Edinburgh edition was 1893.

I find the Library of Congress Online Catalogue to be a useful resource for book publication dates (and biog info about authors).

According to the LC catalogue, Greig's 6 vols were published between 1892-5. I think this was the first ed, by Jack of Edinburgh. Hope so, as it's the one I've got!

I can only see vol 2 dated for 1893, the others have no date at all (also by Jack of Edinburgh).

On my set, volumes 1 to 4 are all dated 1893.
Vols 5 and 6 have no date. This set is bound in brown cloth. However, my local library also has a set and it is bound in blue.
So that's 3 known colours and various dates. Puzzling!

PS Jim,

Perhaps you could check the British Library or the NLS? They should both have the first edition from legal deposit.

I was curious about Greig himself so I emailed the National Library of Scotland asking if they had any biographical ino on him. Below is the reply, received in less than 24 hours. Well done NLS.

'There seems to be surprisingly little information on such a well known composer and professor of music, and most catalogue records merely refer to him as 'flourishing' between 1892 and 1910. [as in the Library of Congress catalogue - b.t.]

However in John Farmer's 'A History of Music in Scotland' published, 1947, Greig is mentioned many times and his dates are given as 1854-1909. According to Farmer's text, Greig was educated at Edinburgh University and Moray House Training College, he also graduated B.Mus (1878) and D.Mus (1899) at Oxford. As organist at St. Cuthbert's Free Church, Edinburgh, and as interim professor of music at the University (1891) he was very popular. In 1900 he became organist of the Scottish National Church, London, where he died'.

Also checked the blue copy of 'Minstrelsie' in my local library. They only have vols. 1,4,5 and 6. None have any date on them, but vol 1 has a photo of Greig in it, which is not in vol. 1 of my brown set!

I'm waiting for an answer from the BL but as you say, Big Tim, Farmer (Henry George) mentions Greig a few times and writes twice that the Scots Minstrelsie was published in 1892-5, Edinburgh.

Looking at the two catalogue records in our Integrated Catalogue the British Library uses the following conventions for dating publications:

G.747. is dated 1893. A date not in parenthesis is a firm date of publication found in the work, for example on the title page.

R.M. 13.e.19. is from the Royal Music Library and dated [1893]. A date in square parenthesis [1893] is a firm date supplied from another source of information, whether ineternal or external such as a publisher's catalogue or advertisement.

My husband was just given the full set of 6 books dated 1893. Just wondering about value of these. He is an excellent piper. And I am an avid book hoarder.

Hi, D. Parker - as far as I can tell, the books are very common and have little value, maybe a hundred dollars for the set - maybe $200 for a set in exceptionally good condition. I have just one volume, and I liked it. Can't find it just now, though.
I checked prices at bookfinder.com - most of the available copies were from UK booksellers.
