I did a forum search, and a search through the links pages, but could find no references to this excellent online sound archive at the School of Scottish Studies. Have I missed it? I would hate to think people here couldn't find any link to it. It has many songs, stories, folklore, etc. and with English translations.

Also, is there a way to do a search of the links pages besides scrolling through all of them? Some special way of using the search engines?

Anyway, enjoy this website, it's great!

I have most of these Tocher publications but what a difference to hear the actual voices of the storytellers and singers.

And, lest the thread title put anyone off, it's actually a mix of Gaelic and English-language material. They seem to have added more since I last looked at it.

Why in god's name would anyone be put off by a notice that a quality traditional music sound archive exists on the internet, in a folk/traditional music chat forum?

I believe he was referring to the "Gaelic" portion of the title - since there are many who have no gaelic.

Thanks, Malcolm, for noting that. I'd forgotten about this website. Didn't you post it several years ago? I seem to recall going to it once before, but not really understanding what it was all about back then. It is a great site.

It does no harm to re-phrase. How's this:

In case anyone should think that a Scots Gaelic archive (even with translations into English provided) might not be for them, it may be worth pointing out that no discrimination is made between Gaelic and English-language material; both are included, and both are equally Scottish.

Thankyou again for flagging the site, which is not as well known as it deserves to be.

I hope that, some day, I'll be able to her my uncle, Willie Mitchell from Campbeltown, who was featured in issue 70 (or there abouts)
I have never heard his voice since he visited my parents in Ballacheulish in the early sixties. He came up from Campbelltown, with his wife, in a tandom.
He wrote "Road to Drumlemmin" which has oft been recorded, but he recorded "Florie Loinichan" for the School of Scottish Studies at the time this article was recorded. This was a song which epitomised the kintyre dilect at the turn of the last century

Now that's interesting, too. Road to Drumleman (or however it's spelled!) is a rather nice song, though I've only heard the tune that Tony Cuffe set to it, not the one that Willie Mitchell intended. I gather that the original tune was printed in the Summer 1979 edition of Tocher; I wonder if you might be able to post it here some time?
