Doug: You're gonna like this.

Bush is not our favorite person. He's not our least favorite, either. There's Hitler, Ghengis Kahn and Sadaam to name a few that are worse. But, there's a chance he might be on to something here. Suspend your disbelief for a few moments and hear us out.

The U.S. is poised to attack Iraq and, from all indications, will proceed to do so no matter what. If that happens, Sadaam will have to hastily pack up his palaces and move to Yemen, Lybia, Sudan or wherever lest he be captured and tried for war crimes. If he's hated by the Iraqis half as much as we're led to believe, once he's gone there will be no resistance to the U.S. military. In fact, we are told, the only reason he has not been overthrown already is that, if the coup fails, a lot of folks will die. In short, they're justifiably afraid to come out against Sadaam today because he may be there tomorrow and he's been known to kill one or two people.

Now, if the attack begins, the U.S. will gain air superiority on day one and any Iraqi aircraft will be shot out of the sky. Since none of his safe havens are nearby, walking or taking a taxi will be very difficult. So, he must depart Iraq before the attack actually begins.
If he leaves, the uprising may take place and we won't actually have to start the attack and we could get rid of him without firing a shot.

His cue to depart will be the withdrawal of the U.N. inspectors. As long as they're there, he has nothing to worry about.

We know, we know. This sounds way to elegant for Dubya to comprehend let alone think up. But maybe someone on his staff thought it up and convinced him it would work.

It's possible.

Bev and Jerry - That's an interesting scenario, but it leaves out the war...so I don't think it would fit well with Bush's plans at all. It's like when they had those 2 A-bombs in 1945, which they had spent an incredible amount of money on developing... Well, gee, they just had to use 'em somewhere, and justify the effort, see? Even though Japan was already basically helpless, and was seeking a negotiated settlement with the USA through Russia...even though it was Russia's attack in the last few days of the war on Japan's forces in Manchuria (NOT the A-bombs) that convinced the Japanese it was no use to continue resisting any longer...

There is nothing more compelling than having all the best weaponry in place, ready to fire off all guns...why it's downright irrestible....and then not do it? I don't think so. Think of the lucrative resupply contracts that would be lost to the guys who make cruise missiles alone! This is why I think your scenario is unlikely. Of course, they could always save the stuff for Iran, I suppose, and use Iraq and Afghanistan as staging areas. There's too many of those Ayatollahs to ALL run away...so Iran is a safe bet for a nice high tech war if Saddam does the dirtiest, sneakiest thing possible and skedaddles before the attack.

This is not about "helping" the Iraqui people, guys. If you believe it is, then maybe you believe Hitler was saving the World from an international conspiracy of Jews, Communists, and homosexual wife-beaters too.

If I were Saddam, though, I would give your plan serious consideration, cos from HIS point of view it sounds like a very good plan indeed! And it would royally screw up the works for Mr Bush's propaganda machine.

America needs an unrepentant and defiant Saddam. He is a dream come true for the brass hats. He's even got a little dark mustache. What a guy, eh? Gotta love it.

By the way, I think you will find that the ordinary Iraqui hates the American government and military to the very bone by now. So does the ordinary Saudi. If they were in any position whatsoever to fight America on even terms, you would find that out soon enough. As it is, they have to live in humiliation and bitterness, as does much of the 3rd World, and wait for the Empire to fall through its own corruption and blindness.

Bev and Jerry: I think what you propose is entirely possible. However, where we disagree is you think Bush is a dumbo, I don't.

I would like nothing better than to see Saddam flee the country and take refuge in Saudia Arabia, Libya, or some other Arabic country. Then there would be no war, and I believe Bush would be as happy as the three of us would be.

Both Powell and Bush, in speeches this week, suggested that that would be a good out for Saddam.

If he were to escape to another country, McGrath and others could then begin promoting a plan to subject Saddam to a trial before the "World Court." He could be tried as a war criminal for commiting crimes on his own people.

Doug R,

You might want to leave out the "you liberals" if you wish to make a point. Actually, I do have some compassion for Bush. I believe that he is probably emotionally disturbed and is obsessed with avenging the threats to his father. I believe that he also feels that it's his right for him to have his oil interests. I don't hate the guy. I feel that his administration is taking the country down the wrong path. It's a kind of World War II mythology that Sadam is a "Hitler" and this requires the same kind of policy that was prevalent then. It's out of date and of synch with the world today. In that way, Bush is an anachronism. If he does have information about "terrorism" that the public should know, why doesn't he share it? Why all this secrecy? Why all this hysteria?

I agree that name-calling doesn't get it. I am a liberal (even left of that) that believes that issues need to be discussed, not personalities dissed.

I think Bush has guts. And I think he's not afraid to take risks to get things done.

It's not easy being the President of the US.
