Subject: Help - Selling your own CD - Advice Plea From: Brakn Date: 05 Feb 03 - 07:56 AM After supplying a few CDs to relations and friends, I have decided to sell some at my gigs, in the UK, or on the Internet and I need a bit of help. I've just started to fill in an application for licence in order to pay royalties etc. and could do with some advice about the following tracks. Star of The County Down. Is it traditional? If it isn't...who wrote it? If it is, do I put down "trad/arr myself"? Public domain? Galway Bay, written by Francis Fahy. Is the correct title "My Own Dear Galway Bay"? The Bard Of Armagh, "trad/arr myself"? Public domain? The Rocks Of Bawn, "trad/arr myself"? Public domain? Catch Me If You Can. (Yes I know it's a naff song but it does show that I do alternative stuff if required!) Was this one based around called (Turn Out The Light and) Love Me Tonight by Bob McDill? I mean did somebody take this tune and give it silly Irish lyrics? Follow Me Up To Carlow written by Patrick Joseph McCall. Is the air Public domain? Also, what would be the best way to accept payment on the Internet? (I already have a website) Have any of you done this yourselves? many thanks Michael Bracken |

Subject: RE: Help - Selling your own CD - Advice Plea From: IanC Date: 05 Feb 03 - 08:00 AM Brakn We have a really good system for this - the Lyrics and Knowledge Search (thought the Forum Search part isn't working at the moment). For example type CARLOW in the box. It brings up 5 or 6 songs including "Follow Me Up To Carlow". Clicking on this brings up not only the song, but a crossreference to the thread called "Origins: Follow Me Up To Carlow". This should provide some help. ;-) |
Subject: RE: Help - Selling your own CD - Advice Plea From: michaelr Date: 05 Feb 03 - 01:04 PM Brakn -- check out online stores such as cdstreet.com, cdbaby.com, or efolkmusic.com. They will provide you with a page to advertise your CD, put up soundclips, etc. At least one of these gives you the option of sending them inventory to ship, or shipping from your house after they notify you they have a buyer. These sites get a lot more traffic than your own website will, and you can set up crosslinks between your site and the store. As an example, go to my site, click on the "order" button, and follow the link. Cheers, Michael |

Subject: RE: Help - Selling your own CD - Advice Plea From: Strupag Date: 06 Feb 03 - 10:11 AM Hi Brakn, You've already missed a chance! What's you website? Another thing; I've said this before on mudcat; If you are gigging in an area check if there is a local radio station. If so,offer them a CD and offer to do either a live spot or an interview about your album good luck Andy |

Subject: RE: Help - Selling your own CD - Advice Plea From: Deni-C Date: 20 Feb 03 - 02:01 PM Hi everyone Some musicians where we live carry other people's CDs as well as their own. This gives people a chance to browse and a choice of stuff which might be nigh-on impossible to get elsewhere. I think it's a great idea. it also saves the embarrassment of a whole attache case filled with just one CD. When I start I think I'll chuck in CDs from my own collection, which I don't want, just to make it more interesting to look through. Maybe more of us should swap 'favours' with other musicians like this....or maybe they work on commission. Cheers Deni |
Subject: RE: Help - Selling your own CD - Advice Plea From: michaelr Date: 20 Feb 03 - 08:09 PM Hey Brakn -- nice picture of yourself and the wife! ;-) Seriously, you should put a photo of yourself on the home page, I think. Nice site otherwise. Cheers, Michael |
