Subject: RE: BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards From: Peterr Date: 14 Feb 03 - 06:03 PM A few yaers ago I wrote to Folk on 2 about the change in format of Young Tradition Awards, ie that it used to allow a chance for anyone who sent in a recording to get listened to. It changed to exclude anyone who was not already in the scene. In the south west as I'm sure everywhere else we have a good helping of young talent who choose not to live and get involved in what seems to be a rather incestuous set-up. So how many are out there who are great young singers who don't get a chance to be heard by those who run the establishment? Not gripping at Harding/Leonard who have an impossible job in less than an hour a week - just lets try and hear some OTHER good youngsters who enjoy trad/trad style singing |
Subject: RE: BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards From: breezy Date: 14 Feb 03 - 08:41 PM too much 'Prime- time' didnt you think? I thoughtthat award was going to Woody G!! silly me.and Paxton got it earlier then, as did Pete S. Have the Clancys got anything? It took daddy Carthy a long time, suppose he cant get any more awards. Perhaps it ought not to be an annual event, then there would be more time for more people to be involved in the selection and voting process. Every 3 years? or it'll get devalued. 'cant give it to him he's already got it' Watch out Roy's coming back out!!! Did I miss the Scottish contribution? or is that Mccusker Nothing for Lonnie then, mmm waste of a death. |

Subject: RE: BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards From: Bullfrog Jones Date: 25 Feb 03 - 09:14 AM Only just caught up (online) with Mike Harding's programme from last week (Weds 19th) and he made a point of playing whta sounded like the whole of Eliza's speech, including her urging everyone to sign the PEL petition. Obviously someone at Smooth Operations took note! BJ |

Subject: RE: BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards From: Deni-C Date: 25 Feb 03 - 09:31 AM Peterr You've got a really good point there. The folk scene is always moaning about not having enough young blood, so then they get a few and keep recycling them, forgetting that they miss a new batch every year. Very frustrating. Is it more incestous than the pop scene do you think? Keep plugging away, and keep pushing. Don't forget, these existing artists may be talented but is often a professional approach to music as a business that puts you in the public eye, rather than talent alone. If you ain't making waves, you ain't kicking hard enough.... |
