Hi, oombanjo - I changed the title of the thread to show that you're looking for banjo tab, but it appears that we don't have a MIDI for the conventional tune for "Sweet Sunny South." We have a "Bright Sunny South" MIDI, but it's a bit different. If somebody wants to e-mail it to me, I'll make sure it gets posted.
Oombanjo, check the crosslinks at the top of this thread for lyrics and background information.
Here's a link for somebody if they want to send me a MIDI.

That didn't come out quite right for the MIDI, but I'll bet Joe can find it.
Yes, I found it, Sorcha. It's a banjo arrangement. I don't think I can use it to extract the simple MIDI I wanted for the for the Digital Tradition.

A transcription and audio are available at the Library of Congress collection of Henry Reed tunes compiled by Alan Jabbour.
I don't know how to make a clicky (anyone want to help?) but if you'll type in http://lcweb2.loc.gov/ammem/hrhtml/hrhome.html you ought to get there. This is a wonderful site.

Messages from multiple threads combined. If you didn't get an answer to a request, post a new message to your original request thread - don't start a new thread to ask the same question. If you like, we'll change the thread name to clarify your request - but I think this thread title is about as clear as you can get.

The Alfred Reed Collection link appears to have been mistyped. This gets you to the tune http://memory.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/S?ammem/afcreed:@field(TITLE+@od1(Sweet+Sunny+South+[transcription]))
There are links from this page to both an Audio Recording and Music notation (not tab).
Quack!

oombanjo:

Did the tab at the "Hangout" look like this?

"Sweet Sunny South"""
"G"14"3"""
"C"""1"0"21002""
"G"10290"0""
"TOCODA""08"
"G"574"""

If it did that's because you need the "Tabrite" program to read the tab. I you still want the tab, PM me with you email address and I'll decode the tab and email it back to you.

OOMB- Read the thread and the title rang a bell. Found the song on Kate Lissaeur's CD - "Ain't no Grave", but played on fiddle, not banjo.
Sat down tonight playing with different tunings, and am coming near to SOMETHING which fits the overall "feel" of the tune.
If I find time to get further on with it before you find what you want, I'll show you my take on the tune! So far the best banjo tuning seems to be :-

D
B-flat
G
D
.   G

Quack!
Geoff.

You say in another thread that your going to Sacrewell OT camp this weekend - well you'll certainly get to play Sweet Sunny South. Being a song rather than a fiddle tune, you can play it in whatever key you can sing it in, but with fiddle players, we usually do it in G. When you run into me and I've got a banjo in my hand (most of the time!) I'll show you the way I play it - mostly bluff.
See you later
Ray

If so can you let us know what the result was?

I posted Lin's tune, found in Wayne Erbsen's Backpocket Bluegrass Song Book. It's a nice tune, but it's not quite the tune I know. Maybe I learned it wrong - I learned it from a Brit (who used to be married to my wife, but that's another story*)...

*Well, actually, Jim and I were best of friends, and then he died. A sweet, sweet man - I'm honored to be married to his widow. He and I loved to sing this song together, and now I sing it with "our" wife. So, it's a special song for me.

Geoff, I taught him my version of it in D at the Old Time camp, no tabs involved. Tremendous weekend by the way!

Ray - we will have to get the three of us together some time for a proper tune-swap session. By the way Ray - if you read this before tonight, we are heading to the Black Dog at Camblesforth this evening (Wednesday) for the non-mudcat music session. It was a shame you missed the weekend, perhaps you could just get to the pub!
Quack!
Geoff.

OK, so we have two tunes now, and neither one sounds quite right to me. Anybody have another - or am I wrong about the tunes being wrong. They sound to me like harmonies to the tune.
