Is his name Danny Hernan? who wrote the song Mandela about hearing Mandela's speach at Yankee stadium and relating it to Ireland, great verces about Roger Casement and Bobby Sands and Padraig Pearce...
Oh my name is Roger Casement I came to my native land,etc...
anyone have the words and the proper attribution? I should know the writer's name he writes GREAT contemporary Irish ballads... Larry

Are you sure you aren't confusing two songs?

The song LONELY BANNA STRAND (in the DT) has these lines:

Said he, "I'm Roger Casement. I came to my native land.
I meant to free my countrymen on the lonely Banna Strand."

--but it doesn't mention Mandela, Sands, etc.

Then again, maybe your songwriter was quoting this song in his song about Mandela.

Anyway, I can't find any songwriter named Danny Hernan, and I can't find a single web page that mentions all four of the people you named: Mandela, Roger Casement, Bobby Sands, & Padraig Pearse.

As a colateral relitive of Sir Roger, I would not make that mistake, having grown up singing, My name is Roger Casement and I've come to my native land, I mean to free my nation on the Lonely Banna Strand... Nope, it is a wonderful ballad sung by Mary Courtney, and composed by Danny who I am searching high and low for, even in McKenna's fort! He wrote a number of great ballads, including the one mentioned here which speaks of hearing Nelson Mandella at Yankee Stadium, and applying his words to Ireland, it is a haunting bueatiful song. Is this the Mary Courtney you had in mind? She's Irish born, but I believe she lives in New York.

She is, born in Dingle, my wife and I know her since she was in nappies... her brother was the baker in Dingle, I actually have to find Danny Hannon on another matter, hard bloke to find!

Hi any luck on those Sands,Mandela, Yankee stadium lyrics?
We see Morning Star when the get to Scranton Pennsylvania at the BANSHEE pub - We have 2 of there CD's but don't have one with this song on -
I am doing a project for a college course I am taking - on Multiculturalism and I wanted to put the lyrics in my irish section - mary does a spectacular job on it -

No, problem is not the words, I am a pal of Mary Courtney's, the problem is the use of the tune, I have to speak to Dany bout that, one of my songs uses the tune, geting some air play, Danny seems not to be anywhere any of us can find, if you need the words, I will ask Mary for them for you.
