BEST PUB SESSION

"I nominate the Black Horse at Limbrick near Chorley (second Tuesday) as the best pub session. I've only been there once (Jan) but it were brill!"

Can I second that.

I help run a FC 15 miles away and I still think that the above is true.

I will nominate for best session(though not a pub-session) the asylum-seekers hostel in Stoke on Thursday nights(I will not be more specific on the address): where I have had the privilege over the last year of hearing fantastic music from Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, Armenia, Russia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Albania, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast, Zimbabwe, Turkey and probably a few others I have forgotten(and England too, come to think of it). No venue, club or festival has to my knowledge come near to presenting a fraction of what I have heard there.

I'll go with George's slow players session at Whitby because George is a mate and I am a slow player.

Come on Steve while we are on self promotion let's have the best club, 'The Bothy in Southport' (You are a resident after all).
Best fest has to be Whitby.
There are so many contenders for the other honours. John Kirkpatrick, Pete Coe & Pete Morton is a jolly good chap don't you know.
One of the best non commercial C.D.s I have is a home made one for a fiver by Tony Wilson.
Cheers
Les

Shameless self-promotion coming up. For Best Pub Session, the Friday night Press Room Gathering; about nineteen years old, sometimes chaotic, frequently noisy, but overall as good a mix of songs and tunes as one could wish for. Also a meeting place for Mudcatters from around the world -- Tom

Mudcat 2003 Alternative British Folk Awards

If the BBC can be the arbiter of good taste in folk, so can we...

To misquote the Radio 2 site.

March 2003 sees the first year of the Mudcat 2003 Alternative British Folk Awards. Not a prestigious event, but one which celebrates the past year in the world of cyber-assisted folk music. A completely undemocratic and non-representational group of Mudcat members will shortly be voting to pick a winner in each of the categories below.

Nominations are welcomed under each of the following categories (if I've missed any, or you'd like to see non-music items - "best dance group", "best folk drama group" or whatever, please let me know) by next Friday (21st February). Please try to be adventurous!

  • PUB / CLUB FOLK SINGER OF THE YEAR
  • PUB / CLUB MUSICIAN OF THE YEAR
  • BEST "NON COMMERCIAL" GROUP / DUO
  • BEST "NON COMMERCIAL" CD
  • HORIZONTAL AWARD (Best drinker)
  • BEST FOLK CLUB
  • BEST PUB SESSION

;-)
