Subject: RE: BS: Jed's concert and singaround-pics! From: katlaughing Date: 17 Feb 03 - 03:34 PM Pretty impressed with that snow, aren'tcha?:-) Makes me glad we left Wyoming where this, at the bottom of the page was normal! I hope you stocked up on everything.:-) The others were great, too. Thanks for posting them, Bill. kat |
Subject: RE: BS: Jed's concert and singaround-pics! From: Bill D Date: 17 Feb 03 - 03:48 PM perhaps 'impressed' is not the operative term, kat...*grin*...but this is now in the top 2 or 3 snowfalls the Wash DC area has had in 100 years, so they are simply not designed or geared for it. (A guy in little red sports car with 8" of clearance just tried to roar up my street with 12-18" of snow in it....guess what happened? It took 4 men an hour to get him backed out again...) |
Subject: RE: BS: Jed's concert and singaround-pics! From: DonMeixner Date: 17 Feb 03 - 04:36 PM Hey Bill, Wonderful pictures. But where is the accompanying sound bites? :-) Looks like I missed a great party. And the chance to meet more faces that fit more names is always a treat. But if you are calling that a snow fall I just don't don't see the excitement. Three times this winter we have had snow falls greater than 24" each time and right now the official measure is more than 130". And it has been cold enough here to make my son consider (consider?) putting on a jacket before they leave for classes. Don |
Subject: RE: BS: Jed's concert and singaround-pics! From: Bill D Date: 17 Feb 03 - 05:04 PM Don...it's all relative, *grin*...Buffalo, N.Y gets 5 feet sometimes, Phoenix would be REALLY impressed (sound bites, huh?..well, if I had the $$$, I'd have ALL the technology!..*sigh*...maybe soon...(Ferrara is looking into MP3 recorders) |
Subject: RE: BS: Jed's concert and singaround-pics! From: Ebbie Date: 17 Feb 03 - 05:26 PM Waaaaaah! I guess you have to be in the Inner Clique to have a clue as to who is whom! Captions would be nice. (Good pictures though) |
Subject: RE: BS: Jed's concert and singaround-pics! From: SINSULL Date: 17 Feb 03 - 05:30 PM We are expecting a foot of snow tomight. BUT... today a pair of bald eagles showed up in the pond behind my office. I stood less than 10 feet from the male. And they did their thing mid-air with Momma upside down on the bottom. WOW! I am so amazed!!!! Sorry but I had to share. Sorry too that Jed is stuck in DC. But Chance and family are good company. Hey Jed! Does he wear that hat around the house? |
Subject: RE: BS: Jed's concert and singaround-pics! From: GUEST,Songster Bob Date: 17 Feb 03 - 06:04 PM No, Chance doesn't wear his hat around the house. He has good parties, though. A number of us braved snow on Saturday to jam at his house, driving home at 1 am just as the "big" snow was starting. Nice time, good food (even if vegetarian), and good folks to make music with. Subject: RE: BS: Jed's concert and singaround-pics! From: MMario Date: 17 Feb 03 - 06:36 PM Don - I had to keep biting my tongue while down there. ;) but they just don't have the highway equiptment to handle the snow - or if they *do* it certainly wasn't in evidence. The visibility was fantastic during my drive out of DC. no blowing snow, no white outs. No traffic - which was also very good - just couldn't do any speed because there was snow cover on the road and occasionaly ice under it. |

Subject: RE: BS: Jed's concert and singaround-pics! From: open mike Date: 17 Feb 03 - 06:54 PM IT would be very helpful if the pix were labelled with descriptions instead of the generic numbers. such as so-and-so performing, snow, more snow, etc. that way we could tell which ones we santed to view if we have a slow and or dila up connection or are pressed for time.... |
Subject: RE: BS: Jed's concert and singaround-pics! From: Bill D Date: 17 Feb 03 - 07:20 PM *sigh*...yep, Mike...mea culpa...I was tired and lazy this time. I strained my arm shoveling and just thought I'd get 'em up instead of extra typing...shoulda waited, I guess...I'll try to do some labeling/name changing soon for what it's worth. |

From: Fortunato Date: 18 Feb 03 - 03:30 PM PLACES I DO NOT WEAR MY HAT: IN MY HOUSE TO BED AT THE DINNER TABLE IN THE TOILET IN HOUSES OF WORSHIP(OR ILL REPUTE) UNLESS, OF COURSE, I AM HOLDING MY GUITAR OR A GLASS OF BEER IN WHICH CASE I DO WEAR MY HAT UNLESS MY HEAD GETS TOO HOT. YOU WILL NOTICE IN THE PICTURES ABOVE THAT I WAS HOLDING MY GUITAR, AND MY BEER WAS NEARBY. MY HEAD HAD NOT YET BECOME TOO HOT. ANY QUESTIONS? fOR THOSE OF YOU WHO ASKED, I'M THE GUY IN THE HAT. BILL GOT A LOVELY PICTURE OF THE BACK OF MY NECK. CHEERS. |

Subject: RE: BS: Jed's concert and singaround-pics! From: Bill D Date: 18 Feb 03 - 04:22 PM Folklore Society of Greater Washington (DC) takes in Northern Virginia, Maryland suburbs etc...(we 'think' we are the largest folk society in the US)...(I will make some sort of stab at labeling those files this evening...) |
Subject: RE: BS: Jed's concert and singaround-pics! From: GUEST,Norton1 Date: 18 Feb 03 - 04:47 PM How nice to see the pictures and know several of the people from personal experience!! From the snow good things came! Thank you Bill D - what a hoot! Steve |
Subject: RE: BS: Jed's concert and singaround-pics! From: Bill D Date: 18 Feb 03 - 05:08 PM let me do it this way..just some notes about the pics by # ***703-708, of course, are scenes during concet...Dick Greenhaus and Susan of DT are in the front row, with Ferrara at far end by the fireplace...at the back corner of fireplace is Nancy King, who posts occasionally...in 706, you can see SongBob. who posted to this thread, and who is in the redshirt (also in 715,playing the old, beat-up guitar..*grin*...he looks long & hard for old guitars like that)...in 706, in the chair by the front door is Nan Goland, who also plays left-handed guitar in other pics..(she does wonderful country/gospel etc stuff)...the guy with the viola is Ron Davies who is getting quite a reputation for melodic backups, etc, on slow tunes, and sings a lot also..(several of the sing pics are during "Faded Love", with Ron standing and leading it)....in the corner during the sing you can see Marv & Kathy Reitz on string bass & guitar..and in one pic, he is playing clarinet..(scholars bicker over whether is better on guitar of clarinet, but EXCELLENT on both...Marv may know more songs( especially rare country stuff) than anyone I know..)...Our host was T.J. O'Malley, with the silver hair, goatee and pretty guitar (at far left in the room)his wife, Julie plays bass guitar in 712 Dottie Hurley is playing the banjo-uke, and does an amazing variety of songs..(she sang one in Hawaiian, followed by T.J/, who couldn't resist adding "Let's Talk Dirty in Hawaiian") The guy between Jed and SongBob is Barry Schlesinger, who knows REAMS of folk, pop from the 50s & 60s..etc..and has an almost photographic memory for lyrics...in 22 years, I have seen him stumble maybe twice.. Pic 710, is, of course MMario, and Jack the Sailor & Carol C. the lady in 706 in the pink & blus striped shirt, and in other pics is Gail Schneider, who is blind and knows lots of English music hall stuff, as well as many folk songs. She has song sheets in Braille she sometimes consults. ...to her left in 706 is David Sheim, who plays a large wooden harp,(which he did not bring to this evening, but which was featured at Fortunato's, where I did not make it...David can jam on the harp to almost ANY music...Celtic especially..(he was to have been a featured performer at the cancelled Minifestival) in 707, to Ferrara's right, is Lucy Goldberg (also played guitar, but not when I was shooting pics) Jed, you know..*grin*...and Chance/Fortunato in the LOVELY hat! His wife Suzette(709) plays autoharp, as do I occasionally, but I didn't bring mine and was busy...*grin*.. who did I miss? (there are several folks I did not know) |
Subject: RE: BS: Jed's concert and singaround-pics! From: Amos Date: 18 Feb 03 - 07:12 PM Wow!! What a scene, man -- I'd be SOOO jealous if I wasn't here in shirtsleeves gawking at the weird white stuff...but, musically, I am turniing green here! :>)) Nice pics, too!! A |
Subject: RE: BS: Jed's concert and singaround-pics! From: Bill D Date: 18 Feb 03 - 07:21 PM *smile*...we aims to please... (It was an extraordinary evening...nothing 'bad' was done, and most was VERY good...Jed was a nice intro to the party...*wink*) |
Subject: RE: BS: Jed's concert and singaround-pics! From: Bill D Date: 18 Feb 03 - 07:29 PM (my relatives in San Diego died years ago, else I'd find an excuse to get away from this snow) |
Subject: RE: BS: Jed's concert and singaround-pics! From: CarolC Date: 18 Feb 03 - 10:23 PM It was a lovely concert. We didn't stay for the sing after because we had a wedding to go to the next day, but we did make it to the jam for a short while after the wedding. It was a great jam, but we couldn't stay long because we decided to head for the eastern shore of Maryland before the big storm hit, to visit friends. It was really tough tearing ourselves away from those two sings/jams... the O'Malleys and the Fortunatos are great hosts. We made it safely to the eastern shore and got snowed in for a couple of days, which was nice. We just got back to Georgia a few hours ago where new green grass is just starting to grow, and there's not a trace of road salt ;-) Thanks for posting the pics Bill! |
Subject: RE: BS: Jed's concert and singaround-pics! From: Ferrara Date: 19 Feb 03 - 06:58 PM Well, it takes a lot longer to label each pic but that would be nice.... especially if Jeff wants to put any of them up on Mudcat. Maybe tomorrow.... Rita aka Ferrara |
Subject: RE: BS: Jed's concert and singaround-pics! From: GUEST,hg no cookie Date: 19 Feb 03 - 10:37 PM what kind of tree in your backyard, Bill? The one in the foreground straight and tall? loved the pics and Sinsull I saw a swan in a pond in Madison county flori-duh yesterday...not sure what kind.... |
Subject: RE: BS: Jed's concert and singaround-pics! From: Bill D Date: 19 Feb 03 - 10:51 PM the only tree that I see that might be the one you saw, hg,(in the patio pic) is a SourGum "Nyssa sylvatica" (called other things sometimes)...but it is really not a big tree.Behind it, out of sight, is a Poplar that is easily 80-90 ft. high. (I 'should' be in Flori-duh this month, at the wood collectors convention, but time and $$$$...*sigh*.....you all have 50% of the trees in the US south of Tampa/St. Pete...I drool at what gets blown down in storms there....) |
Subject: RE: BS: Jed's concert and singaround-pics! From: JedMarum Date: 20 Feb 03 - 09:29 AM what a great lookin' bunch o' folks! |

Subject: RE: BS: Jed's concert and singaround-pics! From: MMario Date: 20 Feb 03 - 09:50 AM I don't think it can be said often enough; the warm welcome and acceptance of these people to visitors in their midst is incredible! In fact I think after a few hours anyone who felt an 'outsider' would have to be working hard at it! |
