Subject: RE: Shellback Chorus to USA Oct 2003 From: Mark Cohen Date: 09 May 03 - 05:24 AM You know, you'd have the chance to sing "Rolling Down to Old Maui" in Lahaina, or "John's Gone to Hilo" on the shores of Hilo Bay*, or "I Want to Go Back to My Little Grass Shack in Kealakekua, Hawaii" in Kealakekua, Hawaii! Well, it was just a thought. Aloha, Mark (who would love to be in a shanty group again) *I know, I know, "Hilo town is in Peru"--but you don't have to tell anybody that. |

Subject: RE: Shellback Chorus to USA Oct 2003 From: KathWestra Date: 20 Oct 03 - 03:19 PM The Shellbacks were a sensation, a definite hit. We loved 'em (and they seemed pleased with their warm welcome to D.C. too). See the Getaway 2003 memories thread for my complete description (which I'm sure will be added to by many) of their wonderful music and of their Sunday night "Cinderella" skit featuring, among others, Colin Kemp (who I mistakenly called "Colin Hume" since I'd just been reading about his upcoming English Dance workshop in DC) as the Ugly Stepsister. I fully expect a lot of amusing photos to start cropping up as people get some sleep and start downloading pix. Cheers, Kathy |

Subject: RE: Shellback Chorus to USA Oct 2003 From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 21 Oct 03 - 08:06 AM Ruth and I are excited about meeting and hearing them on Thursday at Mystic Seaport... an hour's drive from here. The Fall colors are nearing their peak and it will be a beautiful drive over. I'll take some pictures there... and then look forward to more time with them (hopefully) after they leave Pinewoods camp the next weekend. The Messengers are hoping to connect with them to, and there'll be some joyful singing going on over here in Derby, if that works. That's Derby to you. Have to get used to that English accent. Jerry |

Subject: RE: Shellback Chorus to USA Oct 2003 From: SussexCarole Date: 21 Oct 03 - 02:47 PM Hi Having a really wonderful time - the Getaway was beyond all possible expectations - thanks Rita and all. It's been wonderful meeting so many catters and everyone without exception has been so friendly. Clive, Sheila & I are staying near Washington and have had a wonderful time sightseeing. There's lots of piccys - as yet not too many that can be used for blackmail....but I'm sure time will resolve that. Our love to Brian & Arthur - we really miss you both and hope you're both on the mend. Looking foward to meeting Jerry at Mystic (despite the accent)!!! We're off to Judy & Dennis Cook's tonight for a good sing. Carole x x x xx x |

Said this was the third time he has broken the hip but this time it didn't hurt! He is hoping to drive to Yorkshire this weekend - if he can arrange someone to get him out of the car!!! Glad you all are having a great time. The Great Lakes next time sounds great. I will be there - even if I have to re mortgage! :-))) |

Subject: RE: Shellback Chorus to USA Oct 2003 From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 23 Oct 03 - 07:25 PM My wife Ruth and I just came back from a thoroughly delightful afternoon listening to the Shellbacks at Mystic Connecticut. What a terrific buncha people. And to top it off, they sing! It was such a delight to meet Colin, Sussex Carole, Noreen, Allanww,Theresa, Snuffy and the rest! We took a lot of pictures and I'll see if I can figure out how to get them off to Pene and get them posted. This weekend, the Shellbacks will be at the Pinewoods Camp in Connecticut, but we have other commitments and won't be able to be with them. But, they're coming to our house for Halloween (dressed as Englishmen and women..) and then a sing with the Gospel Messengers, Saturday morning. Now, if we could convince them to stay.. Jerry |
Subject: RE: Shellback Chorus to USA Oct 2003 From: Tinker Date: 23 Oct 03 - 09:41 PM Okay, who actually made it to Wall Street and how did you get by the front desk without being buzzed up???? Jarius came home sorry he couldn't leave for the concert ( a deal suddenly doubled and had to go out by five). And sends apologies he couldn't spend a few minutes showing you around. Of course since he spent the day alternately telling his staff the guitar was a gaitling gun and to get thier asses in gear or that he was going to go down on the street and sing the blues, it would bring in more money than they do... ( Deleuded man has no idea...) Have great fun see you in Newark Tinker |
Subject: RE: Shellback Chorus to USA Oct 2003 From: Noreen Date: 27 Oct 03 - 04:16 PM Hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm at Tinker's computer in Montclair New Jersey (I think that's right), after dropping off several Shellbacks at Newark airport and in the middle of New York for various assignations, at the end of the official Shellback part of our US trip. Col, Theresa, Alanww, Carol and I are heading off to Long Island later on after taking of Tinker's hospitality in her wonderful 'funky' house. Judy O may also be coming with us for a while, and there's a get-together planned for tomorrow evening somewhere in Manhattan where remaining Shellbacks are going to meet up with Jerry Epstein and possibly a Johnson Girl or two for a meal. Then on Friday evening we'll go trick-or-treating at Jerry Rasmussen's and have a grand sing with his Gospel Messengers on Saturday. My mind is so full of singing and new friends and singing at South St Seaport under Brooklyn Bridge and singing on board the Charles W Morgan at Mystic that I'm sure this won't be a coherent post. Suffice it to say that we are having a wonderful time, being made exceedingly welcome (and being asked back!) and we all send our love, particularly to those who would wish to be with us and cannot be. |
Subject: RE: Shellback Chorus to USA Oct 2003 From: Bill D Date: 27 Oct 03 - 04:56 PM *big smile*...oh, I am so glad it is going well! Johnson Girls and Mystic and Jerry & Ruth and more time with Tinker...and....wow...I'm surprised you can type! ...you all know that those 'being asked back' comments are heartfelt. We will scheme with you to make it happen! Take good care and have fun! (he said, nibbling on Cadbury's) |
Subject: RE: Shellback Chorus to USA Oct 2003 From: alanww Date: 27 Oct 03 - 05:13 PM I, too, am at Tinkers and I won't repeat Noreen's details of where we have been and what we will be doing ... All I can say is that we've had a wonderful time and have so many fantastic memories. Just one of them was swapping concertina experiences and tunes with Chris Koldewey and teaching him the Rochdale Coconut Dance and the Top Top Polka. (Chris is the friend of Joy Bennet, a Johnson Girl) and he is a shantyman at Mystic Seaport). I look forward to seeing them both at Lancaster Shanty Festival next Easter and will be pleased to catch the Johnson Girls' tour in July/Aug, which includes Warwick, Sidmouth and Broadstairs Folk Festivals. The main impression, however is one of a very generous and welcoming set of folkies. Such big hearts! "Storms hang about the closing day ...!" Alan * There is a storm warning at present. |
Subject: RE: Shellback Chorus to USA Oct 2003 From: Tinker Date: 27 Oct 03 - 09:39 PM Well Jarius is off to Penn Station to connect folks with the LIRR and the rest of their journey. We watched the Getaway Shellback concert and part of Sunday's concert while folks were here. The laughter just kept on and on.... Theresa and Carole helped me assemble the singing dancing skeleton and hang it in the kitchen .. Very tacky and of course we all sang along. I finally got to show of my "pub" to real Mudcatters as well as all the odd bits and pieces of this house that haven't changed since the twenties. Absolutely great guests... the kind you can leave to drop off and pick up kids and know they'll find what they need and care for themselves... Can we do it again???? |
Subject: RE: Shellback Chorus to USA Oct 2003 From: SINSULL Date: 27 Oct 03 - 10:09 PM Pictures, Tinker? I would love a look at the Speakeasy and the statue. |
Subject: RE: Shellback Chorus to USA Oct 2003 From: Tinker Date: 27 Oct 03 - 10:17 PM I tried to take a few, but in true Speakeasy fashion there is insufficient light after dark for good pictures. |
Subject: RE: Shellback Chorus to USA Oct 2003 From: Mrs.Duck Date: 28 Oct 03 - 08:06 AM Great to hear you're all having a wonderful time. Subject: RE: Shellback Chorus to USA Oct 2003 From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 28 Oct 03 - 12:07 PM I just had a first batch of pictures developed today, from Ystic Seaport... what a handsome group! Subject: RE: Shellback Chorus to USA Oct 2003 From: Suffet Date: 29 Oct 03 - 05:54 AM Greetings: My wife and I heard the Shellback Chorus at the New York Pinewoods Fall Weekend at Camp Isabella Freedman in Connecticut this past Friday through Sunday and they were simply wonderful! If you get a chance to hear them, please do so. With a little bit of luck, we will visit the UK in 2004 and take our own advice. --- Steve |

Subject: RE: Shellback Chorus to USA Oct 2003 From: momnopp Date: 29 Oct 03 - 09:21 AM Snuffy, I share your sentiments EXACTLY -- boo hoo! I've just gotten home after spending a total of 10 hours on the road (for what should have been a 5 hour trip; but that included naps and horrid traffic and pouring rain) after spending the most lovely day with Shells and other silly people in New York City yesterday (I drove all night, basically). You lot (Shellbacks) are at least as wonderful as you accuse us of being! It has been such fun getting to know and spend time with you all and just bask in the mutual admiration society :-). I can't wait to meet up with some/any/all of you again soon! It was loads of fun playing tourist with a gang of crazy Brits (and David Kleiman) in Manhattan (The Shells Take Manhattan?)and singing and drinking in a NY pub and dining in a Hungarian restaurant...talk about a culturally diverse day! Perhaps I'll get some sleep before I try to do anything coherent... I miss you guys already! Peace, JudyO |
Subject: RE: Shellback Chorus to USA Oct 2003 From: Mrs.Duck Date: 29 Oct 03 - 01:50 PM Too late, Snuffy, me and Menolly have already put our names down!! Didn't get the new job but will definitely want to be part of any future Shellback visits!! How about a set above Niagra falls to see which is louder? |
Subject: RE: Shellback Chorus to USA Oct 2003 From: Noreen Date: 29 Oct 03 - 04:03 PM Me again, on a computer at Patchogue library, the workplace of Barbara Hoffmann who is kindly allowing the Shellback remnants (Alan, Colin, Carole, Theresa and me) to stay with her for a few nights at her lovely house in Bellport. Both of these places are about half way along the south side of Long Island (hope you can follow the technical description) and Barbara's house is just a short walk from the ocean. Wow. We went into New York City yesterday on the train (Long Island Rail Road) for the gathering described above, and had a wonderful tour guide in David Kleiman who entertained us with information and anecdotes on our walk and on the Staten Island ferry. Day went so quickly. Today we were invited to a lunch with her local Rotary group and sang for them....! Then we had a tour of the local brew pub where the meeting was held, and sampled all their wares. Surprised I'm typing coherently :0) and it's only 4pm. Lovely to read all the other feedback from folks here and at home, thank you! |
Subject: RE: Shellback Chorus to USA Oct 2003 From: GUEST,alanww (at Barbara Hoffman's on Long Island) Date: 29 Oct 03 - 04:14 PM Yes Judy, yesterday's trip arouind Manhattan was wonderful and wasn't such a brilliant guide. The singing (despite the barman!) at the old pub was real fun ... we then had a great meal and seeing momnpop, Jerry Epstein and Joy Bennet of the Johnson Girls again was a real treat. The remaining five of us are now enjoying the pleasures of Long Island, so far today including a Rotary lunch (with us singing a song) and a brewery trip with a tasting! Later on we will be singing to a few people at the local theatre and another, more lengthly, visit to the home brew pub ... smashing hospitality! "Come fill up your glasses and let us be merry ...!" Alan |

Subject: RE: Shellback Chorus to USA Oct 2003 From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 01 Nov 03 - 12:29 AM My wife Ruth and I just spent a wonderful Halloween with Colin, Sussex Carole, Theresa, Allan and Noreen. They arrived at the house in costume, after a long and tiring trip up here to Derby, from Long Island. Our son Pasha, his wife Nina and our Grandson Little Pasha had come over to meet our English friends, and we just had a great time talking and eating. No singing, if you can believe it. But, it was late, we were all tired, and tomorrow morning we'll sing the roof off the house with our friends, the rest of the Gospel Messengers and an old friend of mine, Karen Kobela here as well. And, I think I'm starting to understand English... Jerry |
Subject: RE: Shellback Chorus to USA Oct 2003 From: Big Mick Date: 01 Nov 03 - 01:24 AM Jerry, I would give much to be there with you. I thoroughly enjoy these folks, and knew you would as well. And KarenK as well, eh? Don't git much better'n that, Paw!!! Ask her to sing "Mary and the Seal". Great stuff. All the best, Mick |
Subject: RE: Shellback Chorus to USA Oct 2003 From: Alaska Mike Date: 01 Nov 03 - 06:33 AM We are finally home in Alaska after 3 weeks in the motorhome and 11 hours in airplanes and airports. I MISS THE SHELLS!!! The Shellback Chorus was wonderful to listen to both collectively and individually. Their songs and their personalities helped to make our vacation more memorable than we thought possible. Noreen sings Irish ballads that can melt the coldest heart. Theresa, Ruth, Jim and Col will forever be my Thespian buddies. Snuffy and Clive have to send me the lyrics to "Sideways". Stuart and Denise are fabulous. Each of the Shells added something unique to their overall performance. Shellbacks are the best. Thanks for coming over to America and sharing all your wonderful talents. Tawmmie and I will try very hard to find a way to come over to England and share some songs with you all again. Got to go get some sleep, we've been up for 26 hours straight. Best wishes, Mike |

Subject: RE: Shellback Chorus to USA Oct 2003 From: SINSULL Date: 01 Nov 03 - 08:49 PM Oh dear! Did Colin wear the Ugly Sister Outfit from the Getaway for Hallowwen? How unfortunate for the younger children. Looked like a candidate for Jerry Springer, I think. |
Subject: RE: Shellback Chorus to USA Oct 2003 From: Ferrara Date: 01 Nov 03 - 08:52 PM You know, I'm getting a taste of what it must be like for Micca, Morticia, Bret and Amos, etc when they read the Getaway threads. I WANNA BE THERE! It all sounds just glorious. So happy that you all (you too, Jerry & Ruth, and Karen) are having so many wonderful experiences together. Rita |
