Subject: RE: Shellback Chorus to USA Oct 2003 From: SussexCarole Date: 21 Oct 03 - 02:47 PM Hi Having a really wonderful time - the Getaway was beyond all possible expectations - thanks Rita and all. It's been wonderful meeting so many catters and everyone without exception has been so friendly. Clive, Sheila & I are staying near Washington and have had a wonderful time sightseeing. There's lots of piccys - as yet not too many that can be used for blackmail....but I'm sure time will resolve that. Our love to Brian & Arthur - we really miss you both and hope you're both on the mend. Looking foward to meeting Jerry at Mystic (despite the accent)!!! We're off to Judy & Dennis Cook's tonight for a good sing. Carole x x x xx x |

Subject: RE: Shellback Chorus to USA Oct 2003 From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 21 Oct 03 - 08:06 AM Ruth and I are excited about meeting and hearing them on Thursday at Mystic Seaport... an hour's drive from here. The Fall colors are nearing their peak and it will be a beautiful drive over. I'll take some pictures there... and then look forward to more time with them (hopefully) after they leave Pinewoods camp the next weekend. The Messengers are hoping to connect with them to, and there'll be some joyful singing going on over here in Derby, if that works. That's Derby to you. Have to get used to that English accent. Jerry |

Subject: RE: Shellback Chorus to USA Oct 2003 From: KathWestra Date: 20 Oct 03 - 03:55 PM Postings from the 2003 Getaway are in a "Getaway Memories" thread that can be found here: Getaway Memories I understand from Dennis Cook that the lot of them have decamped from Camp Ramblewood and have landed at Chez Cook in Laurel, Md., where they are drinking tea in the livingroom while we talk about them online behind their backs. Heh heh heh |
Subject: RE: Shellback Chorus to USA Oct 2003 From: KathWestra Date: 20 Oct 03 - 03:19 PM The Shellbacks were a sensation, a definite hit. We loved 'em (and they seemed pleased with their warm welcome to D.C. too). See the Getaway 2003 memories thread for my complete description (which I'm sure will be added to by many) of their wonderful music and of their Sunday night "Cinderella" skit featuring, among others, Colin Kemp (who I mistakenly called "Colin Hume" since I'd just been reading about his upcoming English Dance workshop in DC) as the Ugly Stepsister. I fully expect a lot of amusing photos to start cropping up as people get some sleep and start downloading pix. Cheers, Kathy |

Subject: RE: Shellback Chorus to USA Oct 2003 From: Fortunato Date: 26 Feb 03 - 01:41 PM QUEEN OF SKYE It's haul her up boys and away she sails, Off to seek a fortune, With the sky in her bow and the wind in her sail, Bound for Carolina CHORUS Hush little baby don't you cry, Gone, Gone away, We'll sail through the air on the Queen of Skye, Bound for Carolina When the Queen of Skye stood in Glasgow town, Off to seek a fortune, Those ragged boys they fit her down, Gone, Gone Away, Kegs of dried up salty beef and biscuits shaped like boulders, An old one-legged parakeet they carried on their shoulders, CHORUS For twenty-one days we sailed the main Off to seek a fortune, 'Till we got swept up by a hurricane, Bound for Carolina, We road those billows low and high, the passengers were wailing, Then a great strong gust threw us up in the sky, above the storm clouds, sailing, CHORUS Then the captain cried clap on more sail, Off to seek a fortune, When we got caught up in a comet's tail, Bound for Carolina, We road that comet 'round the moon, the passengers delighted, And the first mate bellowed there she be and America was sighted. |
Subject: RE: Shellback Chorus to USA Oct 2003 From: Fortunato Date: 26 Feb 03 - 01:36 PM Noreen, it's a great song written by one the Red Clay Ramblers, a North Carolina Band. I'll go fetch the lyrics. Wait right here, ok? |
Subject: RE: Shellback Chorus to USA Oct 2003 From: Noreen Date: 25 Feb 03 - 01:30 PM Yes indeed, Chance, I'm very much looking forward to meeting all these people I've heard so much about- wasn't it the chilli oil that you have to watch out for?? Shellbacks love singarounds, that's what we do! Can't wait! (What's the Queen of Skye? Should the Shellbacks learn it too then?) |
Subject: RE: Shellback Chorus to USA Oct 2003 From: Col K Date: 25 Feb 03 - 12:05 PM As far as I know Judy and Dennis Cook are going to organize a house party for us on either the monday or tuesday after the Getaway before we head off towards Mystic. If you know them they will be able to give you more details of where and when. We cannot wait to come and see all you folks in October, it seems such a long time away. As Snuffy said the two drivers are coming over on Thursday so should be well rested by the time they start driving. Both of us have lots of experience of driving on the wrong side of the road and are looking foreward to the challenge of the USA driving. Thanks for all the positive responses to our visit we appreciate all the help that is forthcoming even at this stage of the planning. As far as I know we have all booked our flights now so there will be no escape for you now. See you in October Many thanks Colin |
Subject: RE: Shellback Chorus to USA Oct 2003 From: alanww Date: 25 Feb 03 - 12:01 PM Thanks for the warning, Fortunato. I'll bring my winter wollies (or perhaps I mean woolies)! "Oh the wild winters wind, blows around our humble dwelling, while we around the fire, lift our voices with our singing ...!" Alan |
Subject: RE: Shellback Chorus to USA Oct 2003 From: Fortunato Date: 25 Feb 03 - 10:27 AM Noreen is coming to the Getaway? Cool. Great news. And all the Shellback Chorus, eh? Sounds like the Getaway will shift mightily to the seaward. I'll relearn the Queen of Skye to sing with you folks, not my genre, you understand, but if the Red Clay Ramblers could sing it, I can as well. We'll try to put together a singaround at one of our houses here in the Folk Ghetto of Silver Spring if you've time when you're in town. Dress warm, you guys, it's sometimes as cold as a well digger's patoot at the Getaway; you can always take it off you know. Micca did! cheers, Chance |
Subject: RE: Shellback Chorus to USA Oct 2003 From: Snuffy Date: 25 Feb 03 - 08:24 AM Our two minibus drivers are flying in the previous day, Mary, so they will have had a good nights sleep. Both have driven extensively in the States. (And I believe jetlag is supposed to be worse going the other way!) See you in October WassaiL! V |
Subject: RE: Shellback Chorus to USA Oct 2003 From: mg Date: 25 Feb 03 - 01:12 AM are you sure you really want to drive with jet lag in metropolitan areas that are hard for anyone to drive in and we drive on the wrong side of the road you know....are there locals you could persuade to do the driving? mg |

Subject: RE: Shellback Chorus to USA Oct 2003 From: momnopp Date: 22 Feb 03 - 09:33 PM As Bill D says, it's so nice to see/hear/feel the buzz for an October event in February (heaven knows we all need it!) The excitement you Shellbacks exude is highly contagious. I can hardly wait for October myself! I wish I had more bathrooms in my house so I could accommodate more bodies comfortably! As it is, I've already put in my "bid" with the powers-that-arrange to house at least one Shellback while you're in the DC area. Max, old man, (hahaha -- he's young even by my standards!!) if you read this, take this as (continued) high praise for the INCREDIBLE "forum" you've created, where so many people can connect over such distances and make the world a smaller, friendlier place. Go, Mudcat! :-) Peace, JudyO |
Subject: RE: Shellback Chorus to USA Oct 2003 From: SINSULL Date: 22 Feb 03 - 09:14 PM Sorry, Jerry. I didn't know exactly where you lived. Jeri too is in NH. And I am leaving out a whole lot of people. Mostly i listed the homes where Micca and I flopped two years ago. |

Subject: RE: Shellback Chorus to USA Oct 2003 From: SINSULL Date: 22 Feb 03 - 07:35 PM From Connecticut (Paton Territory) you can go south to NYC (InoBu and Annamill), NJ (Tinker), PA (Max's territory) or north to Massachusetts, New Hampshire (Curmudgeon would love to see you at the Saturday shanty sing) and Maine where Kendall, Naemanson, Charley Noble and I will welcome you with open arms. If you have money, you can fly to the west coast. It is unlikely that will spend a night in a hotel. This is a generous and welcoming lot. Pay your way with song. Mary |
Subject: RE: Shellback Chorus to USA Oct 2003 From: Col K Date: 21 Feb 03 - 09:08 PM We are all looking foreward to the trip and I don't think that a litle silliness will put us off. We want to meet all or as many as possible of you catters over there, thanks Kathy pm onway. Any suggestions for those of us staying longer ie until Nov 1st or 2nd will be looked at.We are not sure of distances etc and any help in planning will be gratefully accepted. See you in October Colin |
Subject: RE: Shellback Chorus to USA Oct 2003 From: Bill D Date: 20 Feb 03 - 09:53 PM I've just been looking at the Shellback's website, and quite a crew they are! Durned if you all don't look like real people....It's wonderful to see the PMs and plans already being made for an event 7+ months away. I'm sure we (the Wash DC/FSGW bunch)will feel like we almost know many of you before the plane lands. (already do some of you)...Micca and Morticia and greg stevens and Kate must not have said TOO much that would scare you off..*grin*. (and I TRULY hope the craziness in the world news these days does nothing to alter the mood of this oportunity...perhaps it will all be calm by then) |
