Thank you to Jeri, Mary and Tom - for your kind welcome and for the nice words about Jody. Mary - loved the "embracing" rather than "forgiving" his eccentricities. nicely said.

Tom or anybody else: I have a page at www.myspace.com/joycekatzberg if you want to check out what I've been up to musically in all these years. Nice to catch up with you here. Looking forward to finding out more about what you are up to.

Actually Joyce we embraced his eccentricities. There are more than a few cranky types here and most New Englanders.
I have a copy of Jody's CD - a gift. A few years back I found a copy of one of his records on Ebay and bought it to send him. I believe he used the recording for at least one of the tracks on his CD. Have to admit, his life in karate had me scratching my head and wondering if he was putting me on.
I miss his emails - read tomes. Full of interesting information. If you like I can send them to you.
Mary

I'm hoping that by now some of you have heard of the book by Barry Mazor about Jimmie Rodgers' influence on popular music. Mr. Mazor's book ought to address some of the issues people raise in this thread. Yeah, yeah, yeah Jody really DID work with George Martin. Yeah, Jody really did have an influence in the evolution of the song "Muleskinner Blues" which he recorded as "Good Morning Captain". In the liner notes of Jody's self-produced CD "Spanning the Decades" he admits that he didn't come up with the arrangement himself that he had heard it from some guy at some festival. But he was the first to record the version that was later copied note for note by the Fendermen.

If you doubt the collectible nature of GMC check it out on ebay along with some of Jody's other numbers: So You Think You've Got Troubles, If You Don't Know (I Ain't Gonna Tell You) and a few others. He really did trade the royalty rights to the song "Kissing Time" for a 1932 Rolls Royce when we lived in England.

Jody was a cranky yankee alright and sometimes quite verbose but he was not a liar. He did not pay anybody for his page on the Rockabilly Hall of Fame website. Jody's page is still there and nobody in our family has paid a dime to keep it there. I personally don't put much in store by these things whether they be the rhof or the Academy Awards or the Grammies either. They are all self-congratulatory machines serving the business end of the arts. The real proof is in the music and the musicians who remember your music.

Jody's music is included in the Beatles' Legacy Archives and in at least two cd collections of the best of british rock and roll before the Beatles. Jody's songs are still living - still being discussed - being auctioned off as collectible. How many of us on this or any other musicblog will be able to say that?

Jody's performing career was greatly hampered by the fact that he was naive and got cheated by his manager (Monty Bruce) and because he was difficult to pigeonhole. For better or for worse Jody was a genre bender that refused to conform to the expectations of anybody else. That's what made him an influential artist. For a capstain chantey, he'd sing "A Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin On" and then he'd do a beautiful slide guitar version of "Fairwell to Tarwaithe". Go figure.

I am new to mudcat and I'm reading through a lot of these old threads looking for my dad's contributions. It's fun and sad too. I see that many of you reached out to him and forgave him his eccentricities. Thank you for your kindnesses. As he became sicker and sicker, these conversations were the goad that made him want to get up and participate in life.

I hope to make some friends here too.

Your sister in hope and song,
Joyce Katzberg

Oh gawd...........The tale becomes more sordid by the minute.............

"Uncle Shane" is an alias, full name Shane Mulroney, for the legendary hit man Luigi "Tendernuts" Costantini. He had his hayday in those legendary times when The Family had great Cuban ties. Louie was actually the man on the grassy knoll on that legendary day in Dallas. We used to play together as kids and many thought we were brothers. But when his Dad took him to Cuba at age 14 and he got involved in that mess, we were never as close again. Sure, I got the occasional note or call that said, "Hey...Fock you Scapeeze" but it was never the same. He knows he owes me though because I had attended the kids camp of Arlen Spector who took me under his wing and when the time came, I used my influence on Spector as well as a few thinly veiled threats, to swing his position on the legendary Warren Commission so that an entire country bought off on that incredibly fucked up single bullet theory.

Luigi/Louie/Shane met the girls when they went to NYC to work for Angelo "Fruitnose" Scaffidi, the legenday operator of "Big Trash Smash." The garbage business had been good and the contract for the Jimmy Hoffa thing came his way with Louie doing the pickup and Angie planting his ass in the Meadowlands. There's more to this story, but I have to plead the 5th. In any case, that's why the girls think of him as "Uncle Shane."

Alright dammit.......It's happened finally and it's time for me to come clean I guess...........

Back in the late 60's when I was at my most radical and drug induced state, I was known to screw anything, anytime, anywhere. I was legendary and I had all of these legendary partners as well although I could never remember their names in the morning. In some cases they were around for months and I still had no idea who they were until they got into bed. It was a wild and woolly time.......I came, they went.........Years later I found out that I had fathered not only what turned out to be the entire deck crew of the legendary Nimitz in '94, but three girls as well........

Unfortunately, these girls came to see me. What made this odd was that they all showed up within a few days of each other....and of course they met. They wanted something from me and were carrying the legendary Bowie Knives to get them. But when I asked advice of my good friend Bill Clinton who I had befriended at a legendary pot party in '70, Willie said to baffle them with some legendary bullshit!!!

So I did. I got to talking about the legendary people I had known but who had no idea who I was and it was in this way that the conversation turned to construction equipment. I used to be an overhaul technician on a lot of landfill equipment including the legendary "Big Trash Smash." They all had a flair for it and lo and behold I called my old friend Angelo "Fruitnose" Scaffidi in NYC and got them all jobs. Things didn't go so well but while there they found they could sing well together and they formed a band, just the three of them. As it was all my doing basically, they honored me with their name and they too are in the Rockabilly Hall of Flame Shame Shit FAME....yeah, that's it.......Anyway, feel free to visit them there

Spaw

This is from Cranky's essay about himself:

"I did my own innovative version of "Muleskinner Blues". Up until that time, the only way anyone sang this song was the way Jimmy Rogers and Bill Monroe did it. This new version, which Bruce released as "Good Morning Captain" is now the way everyone sings this old folk song."

Muleskinner Blues has been a standard in country, bluegrass and folk music since the 193os when Jimmie Rodgers (not "Jimmy Rogers") made it a hit. Bluegrass bands typically perform Monroe's arrangement. Country guys like Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson have records of it that obviously come through Rodgers. I have a bootleg of Bob Dylan doing it in the sixties. His arrangement is a copy of Ramblin Jack Elliott's. Ramblin' Jack Elliott's is a copy of Woody Guthrie's. Woody Guthrie's was based on Rodgers.

"Everyone" does not base their version on Cranky Yankee's.

Again, from Cranky's essay about himself:

"The TETRA record, Good Morning Captain, was an instant success. ONLY RELEASED IN NEW ENGLAND, NEW YORK, NEW JERSEY AND PENNSYLVANIA, it sold 400,000+ 45's and 100,000 78's. It was on all the juke boxes and got a lot of play oon the AM pop and Rock and Roll stations."

I'm sure "oon" is a typo for "on." I would allege that the rest of his claims are somewhat bogus. Any single that sold a total of half a million copies in the fifties, or anytime, would have resulted in all kinds of coverage. It would have been enough for a Billboard #1 hit. Check the record books, you won't find Cranky's name there. Not as Cranky Yankee, not as Joe D. Gibson, not as Jody Gibson and not as Jody Katzberg. My guess is that, maybe, it sold 400 45s and 100 78s.

I guess now Cranky will have to start a new thread about how I slandered him.

Me and Bill Haley are having a good laugh up here in rockabilly heaven. Anybody with $15.00 can be inducted into The Rockabilly Hall Of Fame. Accounting for inflation, that would have been about $3.75 on the day I died.

Ol' Cranky can tell y'all that neither he nor his friend paid the $15.00 for his induction. And some of you will believe him. In the land of the free and home of the brave, it's your right to believe what you want.

I'm particularly impressed with the "fact" that Ol' Cranky's friend invented rockabilly and that Cranky himself was the first to record it. Me and old Bill Haley ain't got nothing on Cranky and his friend.
Sir, up here in rockabilly heaven, we are in awe of you. If you ever make it up here, we'll have us a little jam session.

Who said, "advertising is not allowed"
There's advertising all over the place INCLUDING THE MUD CAT.

If you read the whole thing, it says, "One mini photograph, and one page" DOES THAT DESCRIBE WHAT i HAVE ON MY PAGE?", OR ON bILL fLAGG'S PAGE?

I don't advertise, neither does Rolls Royce. The people I work for may advertise, even show part of one of my performances on TV. So What.
Don't spread bull shit unless you have a bull or buy some./ And then do it for a specific purpose so you don't stink up the neighborhood for no good reason./

Neither Bill Flagg or I sent any money.
Bill invented the word "Rockabilly" Iwas the first person to record it.(according ro Bill)

All I sent in was biopgraphical notes and photographs.

I had no idea this was in the making untill Bill Flagg told me so, at one of his bluegrass festivals.

Who said "Those Grapes were Sour, anyway" anyhow?

There are some typo's on the webb page. None of any consequence except for the line "A US Senator (Claiborne Crust) should read, "A US Senator (Claiborne Pell).
Anyway, I'm realy tickled and honored by this development which, until a year ago, I didn't even know was in the making. It's all entirely due to Bill Flagg's nominating me for it. Bill is an old friend who was also on the TETRA lable, and invented the word, "Rockabilly". He says (and who am I to argue) that I was the first person to record "Rockabilly" That was in 1956.
