While looking for info on Pap and the Jug Band, I came across the music section of this wonderful website owned and maintained by East Tennessee State University - check it out: Archives of Appalachia.

This is a good site. I especially liked the references to the railroads and Roan Mountain. BTW, Roan Mountain is on the Appalachian
Trail and is intentionallly kept the way it is by many organizations, including the Appalachian Trail Club. The idea is to keep it as a bit of a bald like it originally was. I'd love to get to that area some day.

ETSU has a NPR station that has a full-time bluegrass format. One of my sons was in school there.

I thought I remembered this from before. Just didn't remember that I was the one who posted it! Actually I posted it twice in 1997, IMPORTANT SONG FINDING LINK!! started by Bill D. and sheet music to these great songs started by ad138

No real point to posting the links to those threads, except that the threads contain a bunch of other worthwhile links, posted by many other people as well. I do suspect that after nearly six years, that some of the links are either dead or have moved. I didn't do any checking

Thanks to Kat for reviving the site. It is deserving of attention.

Something I have found very encouraging over the years and moreso in recent years is the documentation through collections at universities of states and regions and for me, even better is that no area has as extensive an interest as the southern mountains. The 244 counties of what we call Appalachia is now blessed with both private and college collections to fantastic extent.

Thanks kat.......I only wish more of it was online! But one can spend some beautiful times in eastern Tennessee and Kentucky exploring....

I notice that some maps of Appalachia include counties from Mississippi to upstate New York but none in Maine where the ApTrail ends/starts. Can anyone explain that?

Kat's link doesn't seem to work any more. I wonder if it's the site that's now called Digital Library of Appalachia. There are lots of MP3 files in the "Music" section. Google shows this link (click) for the Archives of Appalachia, but it doesn't seem to be working today. This index lists links ot all sorts of Appalachian resources - and lots of music. The Southern Folklife Collection at the University of North Carolina looks very interesting.


In the Basic Folk Library thread, BigJ said he/she had trouble playing the MP3 files wiht RealPlayer. There are fairly big MP3 files. I think I'd recommend downloading them before trying to play them. Go to music and pick out a song by browsing or searching, and then click on the link and a page for the song will appear. Let's take Blessed Quietness as an example, since it's a song recorded by at least two beloved Mudcatters. Toward the top of the page is a link that says Click here to display item. If you click the link, your computer should download the item and play it. However, you may wish to download and save the item, and them play it. In that case, click on the link with your right mouse button, and select to save the "target" as...

Then save it to your computer, and then click on the file icon to play. I hope that's clear enough, BigJ.
