Subject: Lyr Req: Yesterday he loathed me...
From: GUEST,Kathryn

This song has been haunting me and it's especially bad when you cant remember the words.   What I remember is:

He loves me and to my amazement
I love it knowing that he loves me
He loves me, but he doesnt show it
How could he, when he doesnt know it

Yesterday he loathed me
But today he likes me
And tomorrow, tomorrow...

that is as far as I can get

Thanks in advance for the help

Kathryn

I remember this from the 60s(?), and I think the title is "He Loves Me". I also think it came from a musical (maybe West Side Story?).

The only other bits I recall are:
"My teeth ache from the urge to touch him.
I'm trembling. What the heck does that mean?"

I think it's called "She Loves Me" and is from a Broadway musical (of the same name?) that ran in the 60s. The original was not in the "he" gender, though that doesn't really matter. Your version might have come from a female vocalist who changed the pronoun.

If anyone knows of good websites for Broadway show lyrics, it's worth trying there. As I say, it was a hit about 40 years ago (can't believe I can remember back that far!!) in the middle-of-the-road-ballad arena, not as a pop song.

Subject: Lyr Add: SHE LOVES ME (Harnick, Bock)
From: Jim Dixon

SHE LOVES ME
(Words, Sheldon Harnick; Music, Jerry Bock; from the Broadway musical "She Loves Me," 1963.)

She loves me, and to my amazement,
I love it, knowing that she loves me.
She loves me. True, she doesn't show it.
How could she, when she doesn't know it?
Yesterday she loathed me. Bah!
Now today she likes me. Ha!
And tomorrow, tomorrow...ah!

My teeth ache from the urge to kiss her.
I'm speechless, for I mustn't tell her.
It's wrong now, but it won't be long now
Before my love discovers
That she and I are lovers.
Imagine how surprised she's bound to be.
She loves me!

I love her. Isn't that a wonder?
I wonder why I didn't want her.
I want her; that's the thing that matters,
And matters are improving daily.

Yesterday I loathed her. Bah!
Now today I love her. Ha!
And tomorrow, tomorrow...ah!

I'm tingling such delicious tingle.
I'm trembling. What the hell does that mean?
I'm freezing. That's because it's cold out.
But still I'm incandescent,
And like some adolescent,
I'd like to scrawl on ev'ry wall I see:
She loves me!
She loves me!

By the way, the story line of "She Loves Me" has an interesting history. It began as play called "The Shop around the Corner" by Miklós László. That was made into a film in 1940 starring James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan. It was remade as "In the Good Old Summertime" (1949) starring Judy Garland and Van Johnson. That version contained several songs, but not enough to be called a "musical." Then came "She Loves Me," a true musical. Then the plot was updated and used again as "You've Got Mail" (1998) starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.

Needless to say, in the earlier versions, the confused lovers exchanged letters, not e-mail.
