Could anyone suggest some good (hopefully cheap) cd's of folk music... maybe a sampler, or someone who plays a a lot of traditionals (not contemporary folk). I'm looking to expand what I can play live.

I posted a bit earlier but didn't explain myself well. The midi files that come through this site aren't easy for me to interpret, I need to be able to hear at least a sung verse and chorus. Maybe there's some folk history book that comes with a couple cd samplers or something? (i'm hoping).

Does this sort of thing exist? do you know of anything like it?

thanks for your time

Drew

I would suggest AMERICA'S FAVORITE BALLADS (Pete Seeger) if you are new to traditional folk music. These albums were originally on Folkways but now could be found as CDs at Smithsonian Folkways. There were several of these LPs in the old days.

Also from Smithsonian Folkways is the "Anthology of American Folk Music" which draws from records from the mid-20s through the 30s. There is also a book out with the same name that gives the sheet music, chords and lyrics for a number of the pieces.

The URL for smithsonian folkways is

http://www.si.edu/folkways

I would suggest the Nitty-Gritty Dirt Band's "Will the Circle Be Unbroken." It's two cds, more than two hours worth of great music by the Dirt Band with such as Doc Watson, Earl Scruggs, Roy Acuff, Mother Maybelle Carter, Vassar Clements, Merle Travis, Jimmy Martin: some of the real greats of traditional and bluegrass music. Lots of great songs and great instrumentals. An absolutely indispensable album, and though it's not cheap, for the sheer volume, the quality of the songs and of the performances, it can't be beat. ---seed

Drew,
You need to be a bit more expansive in your description of "folk", i.e. what continent/country are you talking about.
Cheers
Mick.
