Sad to hear that Edwin Starr has died at 61 of a heart attack. Here's a small bit about him:

The man who penned the 1970 hit song War, Edwin Starr, has died of a heart attack at the age of 61.

Born in Nashville as Charles Hatcher, Starr became famous in the mid 1960s with a series of soul hits, including Agent Double-O-Soul, which he promoted by appearing in a short film with original James Bond actor Sean Connery.

Among hit best known songs were 25 Miles and War, a thundering indictment against war that earned him a Grammy award.

The singer himself served in the US Army for three years before embarking on a musical career.

RIP and thanks for the great songs.

I saw Edwin Starr last year at a concert in a local park. He was still a great presence on stage even though his voice wasn't as good as it had been and delighted the crowd of several thousand happy souls by belting out some old favourites in the sunshine.
He seemed to be enjoying himself, working the crowd and doing his thing!
I'll remember him like that!

Yeah, it's still good for "absolutely nothin'..." maybe Edwin just didn't wanna hang around for another one. Any of us giggin' soon, maybe we oughta play it in his honor/memory..."good" "new" anti-war songs are hard to come by these days, but as war is an ever-present reality , the old tunes unfortunately (or not) still fit. Peace   pbb

Back in the days of my having a band, "War" was very popular. As lead singer, I had the unfortunate task of trying to do this song. My attempts at immitating Mr. Starr's "soul grunt," as it was labeled by one of the band members, was found to be sorely lacking. I did it so poorly that the song was scrapped from the list. Still, it was and is a great song and he did a wonderful job of making it available to the world's ears.
