Subject: BS: Huurrryyyyy Harrrrrrrd : World C'ship From: gnu Date: 12 Apr 03 - 08:32 AM Could this be a dramatic year for Canada ? All four titles ? The Junior's were a treat to watch because of the high calibre of the matches. The curling at the Ford World Championsip in Winnepeg this past week has been nothing short of amazing. Men's semi's are on in 30 minutes and the women's final is on at 1430h ADST. The women's should be a barn burner. Canada (Jones) vs USA (McCormick). Colleen was on fire last night with some awesome curling, making "no way" points when it was do or die. If anyone can beat Jones, it's McCormick. USA has been curling well consistantly and no matter who wins, it should be a hell of a game... but my money is on Jones. http://www.wcc2003.ca |

Subject: RE: BS: Huurrryyyyy Harrrrrrrd : World C'ship From: Giac Date: 12 Apr 03 - 10:06 AM Interesting link, gnu. Being from the southern USA, Curling is not a sport that comes immediately to mind. All I knew about it before was that it involves flinging a large smooth rock down the ice. Must take a tremendous amount of skill to control the stone. I admire all the practice that must be required. So, here's a blicky for gnu's link: Curling Championships |

Subject: RE: BS: Huurrryyyyy Harrrrrrrd : World C'ship From: Rapparee Date: 12 Apr 03 - 10:30 AM First time we ever saw curling we thought it was cool. So my brothers and the neighbors kids and I went out to try it. It was January and the streets were all icy after an ice storm. Problem was, we couldn't lift anything over about 15 pounds or so (6.5 kg) since none of us was older than 8 years. And none of our mothers would let us use their brooms ("You want to borrow the broom? How sweet, you're going to clean your room! You want it to sweep the ice??? NO!!") Anyway, we chose teams and decided to use our breath to blow the ice clear in front of the stone, which of course we didn't have. Not to worry, though. We decided to simply run like hell and slide on the ice, with the other team members blowing in front of the slider. We drew straws and the other side went first. The team took their positions along the street and Billy went first. He got a good run, or at least as good a run as someone can who's running on an inch of ice. At the mark he started to slide, and his team mates started blowin like mad. Billy was rocketing along the ice-covered street, buffeted this way and that by his friends' breath, when he slid right over a downed power line. A live one. Worse, he apparently saw it coming and was quite frightened. So much so that he must have "broken wind" just as he crossed it. Atlease, we surmised as much. Anyway, an explosion sent him up instead of straight. He was passing five thousand feet (a whole bunch of centimeters) when he managed to grab the wing of a passing Cessna, which landed at the airport. His parents had to go get him. We weren't allowed to do curling anymore, either, even though every kid in the neighborhood thought it looked like a really great sport. |

Subject: RE: BS: Huurrryyyyy Harrrrrrrd : World C'ship From: gnu Date: 12 Apr 03 - 10:41 AM Well, Norway is playing steady and Canada is not. Pressure may determine the outcome. You can see two of the Canucks actually shaking while releasing. It's not pretty. They are going to have to settle down. Especially with regard to challenging the skip's decisions (on one stone, right up until crouching) because it's distracting their concentration. I'd put money on Norway right now. Randy is only one for four when down at half. |

Subject: RE: BS: Huurrryyyyy Harrrrrrrd : World C'ship From: gnu Date: 12 Apr 03 - 12:19 PM Wow. Right down to the wire; a real nail biter. And what a shot to win ! On to the finals for Ferbie. And Colleen will be on in just over an hour in the women's final. It should be interesting with both skips and both mates being Canucks. Must run to the powerhouse and get some Canehdian Bud... seems only appropriate. |

Subject: RE: BS: Huurrryyyyy Harrrrrrrd : World C'ship From: gnu Date: 14 Apr 03 - 07:45 AM Not that anyone cares, but... What a game ! What a season ! Ferbie's rink dominated everywhere they went this year. Now the Ford World Championship gold medal (a repeat of last year). And the Winnepeg fans were awesome. They really went out of their way to be supportive of all the nations' teams and deserve a thank you from every Canuck curling fan. |
