Subject: Irish Music Midi Archive From: katlaughing Date: 22 Apr 03 - 03:45 PM Have just submitted this site for inclusion in the Links and thought some of you might like to take a look. They also have a lyrics archive. Here's the link and their blurb: click A collection of Irish themed midi songs ranging from political to humourous, some sad, some happy, all good! Subject: RE: Irish Music Midi Archive From: Mary in Kentucky Date: 23 Apr 03 - 12:55 PM I don't mean to be a "pooper," well not much anyway, but a quick listen indicated that many of these are Barry Taylor's midis. (One even sounded like his arrangement with different instrumentation.) That's OK because Barry has been very generous to make them available on the WWW, but there really should be an acknowledgement. I think it's great that we can hear these arrangements and common folk like me can be creative and use all this music on a web page, but a little recognition is in order. |
Subject: RE: Irish Music Midi Archive From: Barry T Date: 23 Apr 03 - 08:52 PM Thanks, Mary. I wasn't intending to react, but you did it for me. This is a good example of why I don't upload midi sequences any more. 'Just not worth it. :-( |

Subject: RE: Irish Music Midi Archive From: ard mhacha Date: 24 Apr 03 - 03:01 AM Well spotted Mary, this Site should be told, fair play to you Barry, but these con-men on Ireland First should get a rollicking from all of us. Ard Mhacha. |
Subject: RE: Irish Music Midi Archive From: katlaughing Date: 24 Apr 03 - 10:03 AM Right you are, Ard. I've just sent them an email about this thread, the fact that I submitted the site for inclusion in the Mudcat links, and told them many of us want them to give him credit asap. I've also sent Joe a PM asking him to make note of the *piracy* in the actual link on the links page when it gets added. Thanks, kat |
Subject: RE: Irish Music Midi Archive From: ard mhacha Date: 24 Apr 03 - 01:39 PM Kats I sent them a wee reminder that we are not pleased. Ard Mhacha. |

Subject: RE: Irish Music Midi Archive From: GUEST,Barry T, at work Date: 24 Apr 03 - 04:45 PM Actually one should count to ten before firing rockets. Quite often a midi collection gets separated from the readme file originally embedded within the collection. Then users re-publish part or all of the collection, and any trail to the originator is both lost. SOmeone else downloads that collection and the cycle repeats. Welcome to the web! Another aspect is that most folks I've ever bothered to contact were unaware that midi file arrangements are protected by copyright, even if the tune itself is in the public domain. To their credit they have also been quite apologetic when informed of the principles that apply. There have been a few sites that indeed sent me on a cyber-rant. They either refused to include an acknowledgement of authorship, or tweaked something (e.g., changed an instrument voice or two) in my midi sequences and then claimed authorship themselves. One even charged money to allow access. As is all too common on the web, the behaviour of a few hurts many. Thankfully, most infringement is done out of simple ignorance. But I must confess that it hurts to see someone else getting cyber-applause for hundreds of hours of my work! No loss of revenue, to be sure, just a little damaged pride. - - - |
Subject: RE: Irish Music Midi Archive From: Joe Offer Date: 24 Apr 03 - 05:10 PM Hi, Barry - haven't seen you around for a while. Much of "Taylor's Traditional Tunebook" is available at Lesley's Contemplator site. Barry also has a site of his own for Canadian tunes at http://members.shaw.ca/tunebook/. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Irish Music Midi Archive From: katlaughing Date: 24 Apr 03 - 06:01 PM Thanks for the further info, Barry. It won't hurt those folks to know that they may have done a disservice. Hopefully they are unaware and will be apologetic.:-) You deserve the credit no matter how they came by them. thanks, Joe, kat |
Subject: RE: Irish Music Midi Archive (BT) From: GUEST, GEST Date: 24 Apr 03 - 06:14 PM No matter what, Barry, you have created an invaluable legacy. Your work will be long remembered by us all. Thank you. :-) GEST Songs Of Newfoundland And Labrador |
Subject: RE: Irish Music Midi Archive From: Mary in Kentucky Date: 24 Apr 03 - 08:12 PM I suspected this page when I saw "An immigrant's daughter" listed. (Even though Barry titled it "An Emigrant's Daughter," his words to the tune "The Grenadier and the Lady." I always forget which is which, emigrant and immigrant...) But it really is a lovely story, one I suggest y'all check out. I looked for it at the Contemplator site, but the link to the lyrics didn't work. Since so many people link directly to Lesley's site, and she has to spend a lot of time renaming files, I figured the name just got lost in the shuffle. Sure 'nuf, I found it...http://www.contemplator.com/tunebook/irelandmidi/emigdau.htm In case someone doesn't know how to check authorship of midi files...If you have sequencing software such as Cakewalk, open the file in that program and there is often text describing the name, author, date, etc. Like Barry said, many people just grab a midi from another page, but the author is often still attached, (author's name, that is) as in the case of "An Emigrant's Daughter." |
Subject: RE: Irish Music Midi Archive From: Sorcha Date: 24 Apr 03 - 09:05 PM I put a note to credit Barry on their guest page... and an Immigrant comes In.........does that help? |
