Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Two Adge Cutler songs From: GUEST,Musket sans Ian Date: 01 Jun 13 - 07:21 AM He was one of my heros. My brother partnered him at dominoes a few times when he worked in a pub Adge used to use when not touring. I sing a couple of his wonderful songs. Ferry to Glastonbury and Twice Daily. I am giggling now recalling the middle 8 on Up the Clump when he shouted "Thissen nothing but hedgehog! Get off moy brown suede gaitors!" |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Two Adge Cutler songs From: Crane Driver Date: 23 Apr 03 - 03:16 PM The "Virtute et Industrial" of the title is down to the old Bristolian dialect, that added "L" to the end of words finishing in a vowel, thus "Industria" of the town motto became "Industrial" locally. (The "E" on the end of "Virtute" wasn't pronounced, so didn't attract the superfluous "L"). Some say the town name was originally "Bristow", becoming "Bristol" under the influence of the local cider. "Stow" is a common Saxon place-name element, I believe it signifies a village. Andrew |

Click for Wurzels I hope the Blicky works, it's been a while and I've not had chance to double check the site recently. LTS |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Two Adge Cutler songs From: CRANKY YANKEE Date: 22 Apr 03 - 08:12 PM Many thanks. Jim. I had Adge Cutler's album but lost it somewhere. We, my wife and I, had most of it figured out. However the last line, "Till weem all out Arno's Vale. Had us completely snowed, as did, "Nostra Yakki Da". Virtute et industria is also the motto of Bristol, Rhode Island, USA I occasionally sing, "When the Common Market Comes to Stanton Drew" I spent four years at RAF Lakenheath (and Soho) so most of the "Britt" terms were familiar. You cleared up the ones that I couldn't figure out. Adge's Bristol slang and terminology runs a close second to "Uncle Dave Macon"'s Tennessee accent which is almost uninteligable to us real Yankees (Yankees live only in the five New England States) Thanks again. |
Subject: Lyr Add: VIRTUTE ET INDUSTRIAL (Adge Cutler) From: Jim Dixon Date: 22 Apr 03 - 07:12 PM I was able to confirm that "Tanglefoot Twitch" appears on the album "Adge Cutler & The Wurzels (Recorded Live at the Royal Oak, Nailsea, Zummerzet)," Columbia SX6126 (mono) / SCX6126 (stereo), 1967. But I couldn't find lyrics. For the other song, Google was smart enough to suggest the spelling "Virtute et Industria" (virtuosity and industry) which I found is the motto of Bristol. But the title of the song is "Virtute et Industrial." Lyrics and notes copied from http://www.brisray.co.uk/bristol/bvirtute.htm: VIRTUTE ET INDUSTRIAL Oh, we be Bristol kiddies. We comes from Bristol City, Where all the blokes is handsome And all the birds is pretty. Weem proud of our 'ome town. It never gets we down, And we got a little motto What we sing up Bedminster Down: Virtute et Industrial! Three cheers for Novers Hill! If the City don't win Saturday, P'raps the Rovers will. Virtute et Industrial! Shout it to thee neighbour. Virtute et Industrial! An' see thee down the Labour. Praise the City Fathers 'Cos they know what they'n doin'. Don't listen to they moaners Who says weem going' to ruin. They talks of Portbury, But I ain't kiddin' thee, Who wants docks When all the locks On the lavatories be free? Virtute et Industrial! Long live all the brewers! Build more pubs and bettin' shops. Don't waste the cash on sewers. Virtute et Industrial! Let's have another drink. Virtute et Industrial! An' never mind the stink. Oh, we be livin' well. Bad times is in the distance. We lives it up like hell On National Assistance. It ain't that we do shirk To do a bit of work, But if you coulst live without it, Well, who'd be such a berk? Virtute et Industrial! We be such sober people. Bristol's like a gert big church With a thousand-foot glass steeple. Virtute et Industrial! No drunks is ever seen (hic). Virtute et Industrial! Well, thees know what I mean. Let progress be our watchword. Hooray for all the planners! They keeps the traffic flowing And never minds the tanners. From Lulsgate thees could tear To Paris, now by air, But the buses down Old Market Is enough to make thee swear. Virtute et Industrial! Cardiff's now much nearer. They'n gonna print the Evening Post In Welsh to make things queerer. Virtute et Industrial! Sing "Nostra Yakki Da." Virtute et Industrial! What fink of 'ee? Oh, ah. With one-way streets and flyovers We knows which way ween facing. Has you seen our brand new bridge Down at Cumberland Basin? The cars go by like thunder Up and round and under. Just where they goes No bugger knows And 'tain't no bleedin' wonder! Virtute et Industrial! Our town will last for ever. If we can't build the Concorde, We'll buy 'n on the never. Virtute et Industrial! Who got ten million quid? Virtute et Industrial! Well, ther thee bist then, kid. The best of British luck To the Mayor and Corporation! They just come back from France, A credit to the Nation. Now, mind you, keep it dark, But they reckon the old Town Clerk Bought back they Follies Bergères In exchange for Ashton Park. Virtute et Industrial! Up the Downs on Sundays. We spent the rent on Saturdays Down Nelson Street on Mondays. Virtute et Industrial! May Bristol never fail. Virtute et Industrial, Till weem all out Arno's Vale. NOTES:
Blokes = men
Cumberland Basin = the site of the entrance to the floating harbour. A huge new road complex was built here in the 1960's. The road bridge here is a swing bridge that allows shipping entrance to the floating harbour. |
