Subject: Is this a record? From: alanww Date: 23 Apr 03 - 10:04 PM Last (Easter) weekend at the Miskin Folk Festival, near Cardiff in Wales, my dear friend Snuffy created what I think may be a record ... In the time between Friday lunchtime to Monday lunchtime (ie 3 and a bit days) at singarounds he sang no less than 54 different songs. [I only managed 33 myself ...] Is this a record? "Sing John Ball and tell it to them all ...!" Alan |
Subject: RE: Is this a record? From: GUEST,Russ Date: 23 Apr 03 - 11:56 PM Sorry, no record. During a 14 hour singing marathon at my house, 9 of us sang 103 songs. All of us sang all the songs together, so that's 103 per participant. |
Subject: RE: Is this a record? From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 23 Apr 03 - 11:59 PM What was the average size of these singarounds? Were there, say, a dozen singers in each? If that's the case, then 54 songs is a very impressive number. With a group of 12 singers, it would take almost an hour for one's turn to come back around. So, that's 54 hours of singing or waiting to sing out of a 72 hour long weekend. Only leaves 18 hours for sleeping, eating and other bodily functions. But, if the average group size was smaller, sorry, not so impressive. After all, lots of giggers will do 50+ songs during a four-hour bar gig and that's just par for the course. Bruce |
Subject: RE: Is this a record? From: GUEST,banjoman Date: 24 Apr 03 - 06:23 AM Good try - but some years ago a few friends and I (varying from about 12 to 25 in number at various parts of the day) did a marathon 12 hour sponsored singaround for a local charity. We managed to complete 380 songs without any repeats, and half a dozen of us kept the thing going during the slack times for about two hours. I couldn' speak for a week afterwards and my fingers were numb. Well worth it though as we managed to send a few handicapped children on a decent holiday. |
Subject: RE: Is this a record? From: alanww Date: 24 Apr 03 - 06:51 AM Perhaps it would be helpful if I described the circumstances ... The first point to make is that none of the 54 songs he sang required him to have recourse to looking at the words! Most of them were sung at standard singarounds, with each singer taking turns round the room. But there were also some sung at mixed music and song sessions in a crowded bar, with everyone jumping in as they desired. The usual size of the singarounds in the song loft at Miskin was between about 15 and 30 people, with the numbers changing all the time (there were other music and concert sessions going on at the same time). In the afternoon there was usually a lull and when the number in the room got down to 6 or so it tended to stop and reconvene later after a break. On some occasions we sang in the bar area, which was a mixed session with musicians aswell. (In that room we were in sight of the 12 barrels of beer racked neatly behind the bar ... magnificent!) The singing probably started at around 1 pm each day (but I wasn't there myself to confirm that!) However I do know that it ended at about 5am on each of the three nights. We kept going late! Well done Snuffy! "Dancing and singing, bell ringing ...!" Alan |
