Second attempt - after more info kindly provided by Davebhoy on the first thread showed that I was barking slightly up the wrong tree....

My dad is looking for the words to a song that the thought went
"it wasn't the yanks that won the war it was my boy Willie".

However - Davebhoy found a link that indicated that the correct words were "it wasn't the TANKS that won the war it was my boy Willie". The Willie being a prior variant of armoured car it seems.

If anyone could tell me the words to the song then I'd be very grateful!

"My Boy Willie" is the regimental march of the Royal Tank Regiment, so if no one here can help then I will try writing to them.

Cheers all

k

I posted a reply in your original thread, before I saw this one.

It's generally not a good idea to start multiple threads on the same song. It's better to find your original thread and add a message to it; that brings it to the top of the list. If your thread has disappeared because it's more than 24 hours since the last post, you can find it by using the filter boxes on the main forum page.

Yes - I started the 2nd because the first had thrown up a change in the lyric anyway & I think the "first line" approach rings bells quicker. I didn't go for the first line approach originally because I didn't want anyone to misunderstand my intentions ("It wasn't the Yanks that won the war" might have caused confusion right now).
Anyway - here's a link back to the other thread, so this one can just be a pointer.

Hmm ! My late father, who spent some time in 1944/45 commanding SP' Antitank Guns (M10's with the 17 pndr), and had previously trained and commanded a troop of Airborne 6 pndrs, used to sing a version of
this.

I regret that the only stanza I can recall was :-

It wasn't the Tanks that won the War,
The Anti Tank guns were there before,
With my boy Willie"

I think we could accept that unit rivalry between the Royal Tank Regiment and the Royal Artillery (Anti Tank) gave rise to this parody, but does anyone know either version ?

Gareth
