Subject: BS: Pol. links & info for off-line friends
From: katlaughing
Date: 19 May 03 - 01:55 AM

Please post your favourite political links to this thread. I thought it could serve as a one-stop-shop repository for them. With Joe's permission, it will be an edited thread.

I will also use them to gather info for a newsletter/synopsis for friends and family who don't have internet access for whatever reason.

Thanks!

kat

Hi katlaughing:

Sorry to be dumb, but I'm not sure what you mean by political links. Do you mean political articles from (e.g.) the New York Times, or other periodicals? Other forums?

Here are a few political links. I'll try to dig up more later.

News Sources

  • Reuters, commercial wire service.
  • The Nation. Established in 1865, a widely respected source of news and opinion.
  • The National Security Archive, an official site of George Washington University.
  • The Progressive, news and opinion since 1909.
  • The Straits Times Intereactive, covering Asia and the Pacific.
  • Consortiumnews.com, from the nonprofit Consortium for Independent Journalism, Inc.
  • Independent Media Center, a collective of independent media organizations and journalists. “Radical, accurate, and passionate.”
  • ONLINE Journal, building a new news media of, by and for the people.
  • Left Business Observer, highly regarded, most content by subscription.
  • NewScientist.com. Where science and politics cross paths, this is a good source of actual information.
  • NewsDirectory.com. Links to many of the world's newspapers.
  • Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, published by the Educational Foundation for Nuclear Science (EFNS). The mission of the EFNS is to educate citizens about global security issues, especially the continuing dangers posed by nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction, and about the appropriate roles of nuclear technology.
  • CorpWatch, Holding Corporations Accountable.
  • Federation of American Scientists, an excellent background resource to help frame the reality of other news sources.
  • MotherJones.com, “A legacy of raising hell, a commitment to JOURNALISM.”
  • openDemocracy. “Committed to originality and truthfulness, openDemocracy will help people come to their own views, rather than selling a specific perspective. It is an independent space for the diversity of ideas and experience, attracting a worldwide network of people.”

Wow! Thank you!

What I really meant and should have said, were specific articles, info sites, etc. on current events BUT, what you both have listed is great for general purposes!

Sorry, pdc, that I wasn't more clear. I kind of changed horses midstream. Originally I was thinking of only articles, etc. which had to do with what is happening to our country right now and how to educate off-line people about it, esp. from my viewpoint, i.e. liberal. But, when I decided that would be too narrow, so...we'll see where it goes, but I think we have a good start, eh?

Thanks a bunch!

Kat, Don't you think links to current event stories get stale too fast to be worth keeping? The links I posted and the ones Piers posted will serve to keep anyone up to speed who wants to know what's happening and how it's viewed by diverse sources. It's more economical than posting a separate link to each article.

Yes, you are probably right, Mark. I think, as I try to clarify in my mind what I WAS thinking (**BG**), I had in mind those specific sites/articles which stand as ongoing info, so maybe not so current. Geez, I don't think I've ever had such a time speaking my mind.:-)

Try again...the specifics I had in mind were those such as the Impeach Bush site has which delineates his past actions, etc. and why there is a movement to impeach. That's one example. Not really a current event article, per se, but I still think of it as current.:-)

Sorry this is so muddled. The links you both have provided are excellent and will serve us well.

Thanks,

kat

Hi Kat:

Below is a site I just came across today. Normally I'm the most cynical of people -- "what's your evidence?" is my favourite line. But this website provides documented evidence for two timelines regarding 9/11. One is in PowerPoint, with a different option for Netscape users; the other is a Macromedia Flash presentation (to Mozart's Requiem).

I didn't know where else to post this, as Mudcat is not a specifically political forum, so I've chosen your thread. Hope it's appropriate. If it isn't, just delete it.

Scary, sad stuff.

Two 9/11 timelines

Thanks, pdc. I will leave it, though I was unable to read the slides. The text was all over itself. I am leary of running the .exe of the Requiem, also. I'll try it again, later.
