Subject: RE: BS: Hey Americans! Can Marion visit you? From: Amos Date: 05 Aug 03 - 01:40 PM Marion: I think we can arrange something!! Bring 'em on!! LOL! Seriously, there a number of places around here where learning to surf is the happening thing. The water temp is a little low in November-- around 65F--but you can get by with a spring suit or a farmer john. Just PM me when you know what your plans are! I've got some floor space if you need it! A |

Subject: RE: BS: Hey Americans! Can Marion visit you? From: Marion Date: 05 Aug 03 - 12:47 AM Cool, Amergin, I didn't realize that you're in Portland too. Jbailes, thanks for the invite. I would be getting to DC in the springtime; maybe I can lure you back to the streets to play with me. Gargoyle, I'd be delighted to take you out for a coffee when I'm in Phoenix, but how can I contact you? If you don't want to post a phone number or email adress on the forum, perhaps you could take out a membership just to PM me... Cheers, Marion |

Subject: RE: BS: Hey Americans! Can Marion visit you? From: jbailes Date: 29 Jul 03 - 03:52 PM we can put you up on capitol hill washington dc. as "guest" mentioned, georgetown is a desirable place to busk. i did it a fair amount with a fiddle in the early 1970s. a few years ago i busked with a russian banjoist across from union station in washington dc, a few blocks from our townhouse. we can supply a bicycle; a very good way to get around dc. bill day, responding to you, mentioned the fsgw getaway. i'll likely be there, too, october 17. good luck with your travels. jbai@loc.gov |

Subject: RE: BS: Hey Americans! Can Marion visit you? From: Marion Date: 26 Jul 03 - 09:45 PM Sounds great, Genie. I would be in Portland at the end of October or beginning of November, and I was thinking that we should have a "Take Your Protegee to Work Day". Do you think you'd go to San Diego for American Thanksgiving? I do have a RL friend in San Diego to stay with, and Amos has offered as well. But we always need more surfer chicks... Marion |
Subject: RE: BS: Hey Americans! Can Marion visit you? From: Genie Date: 26 Jul 03 - 08:01 PM Hey, great idea, Marion! Come visit me in Portland and I can prob'ly get you a couple of nursing home gigs (or we could do some together). In case you haven't heard of Portland, it's in that state that's right under Washington, BTW. PM me for details. Lots of good music stuff going on out here. I even have a place you might like to stay in Seattle, too. (You MIGHT conceivably even be in San Diego while I'm down there, in which case you could stay at my folks' house if you're not staying with other SD Mudcatters. Come on out! Genie |
Subject: RE: BS: Hey Americans! Can Marion visit you? From: Marion Date: 26 Jul 03 - 01:42 AM Michigan, Maine, and New Hampshire... right now, I want to go to all of them. However, as I've decided to start in the west, I wouldn't be in that part of the country till next spring, so I'm reluctant to make predictions. I'll have to see how long I feel like staying on the road, and what kind of ground-covering pace seems to work best for me. Hey Amos, if I can't bring you Peter T., will you settle for a couple of surfer chicks? Two of my girlfriends are considering meeting up with me in San Diego in November, and if that works out, we want to learn to surf. Marion |

Subject: RE: BS: Hey Americans! Can Marion visit you? From: kendall Date: 22 Jul 03 - 09:18 PM HEY Tom, you never heard of the Longfellow range? I'm sure you know the Appalachian trail starts (or ends) on top of Mt. Kathadin well into Maine. |
Subject: RE: BS: Hey Americans! Can Marion visit you? From: curmudgeon Date: 22 Jul 03 - 08:30 PM Kendall's almost right. Maine is the most beautiful state when in combination with New Hampshire. Maine certainly has the rock bound coast, but NH has the mountains with or without the Old Man. Seriously, Marion, you should try to get up here to the true Northeast. Let us know your itinerary and you'll be well cared for. Just ask Giok, Micca, Cet and others -- Tom |
Subject: RE: BS: Hey Americans! Can Marion visit you? From: Amos Date: 22 Jul 03 - 07:37 PM Marion: "Pokey" is old American slang (not Valley, more like the 40's I would guess) for the lockup, hoosegow, slammer, tank, pen or community jail. A |

Subject: RE: BS: Hey Americans! Can Marion visit you? From: kendall Date: 22 Jul 03 - 07:19 PM When the TODAY show came here in 1976, Jim Hart told me that Maine is the second most beautiful state, and that Montana was number one. Hell, they don't even have an ocean! By the way, we do have a town called Springfield, but, we don't allow people as stupis as Homer Simpson to breed. |

Subject: RE: BS: Hey Americans! Can Marion visit you? From: Marion Date: 17 Jul 03 - 02:20 AM What's the pokey? Is that valley girl slang? Visiting all the Springfields is an awesome task and one that I fear to be out of my reach this time. And since my only reason to want to was so that I could confidently brag to my friends that I had visited the Simpsons' town, there's no point in going to any of them if I don't go to all of them. I guess I'll save that pilgrimage for my next mid-life crisis. Marion |

Subject: RE: BS: Hey Americans! Can Marion visit you? From: Marion Date: 17 Jul 03 - 01:41 AM Open Mike and Amos, I do intend to go to California, most likely late November or early December. I have a real life friend in LA, and I'd like to spend some time in SF. What's the Balboa Park crew? Thanks, Guest, I'll keep that in mind if I get to DC. BlueJay, I would really like to meet you (and Katlaughing). I'm just trying to figure out when would be a good time to venture into the middle of the country. Bert, I'll probably go to PA. Can I take you out for a coffee or a shoe shine? Hi Kendall. I doubt that I'll go to Maine, but you never know. Cheers, Marion |

Subject: RE: BS: Hey Americans! Can Marion visit you? From: GUEST Date: 16 Jul 03 - 05:29 AM Marion- You mentioned visiting all the Springfields. There is a Springfield about 150 miles southeast of us here in Colorado, so if you intend to visit them all, (what a task), you will be in our part of the state. We would love to have you stop by. Allan C and Bill Sables visited during their "Great Mudcat Adventure", and I'd like to continue the tradition. In reply to your questions: there may be more than one "Jay" in our town of <1000 folks, but I haven't met any. If you mentioned playing music, the folks at Charlie's would be able to differentiate. And yes, a visit with Pick-up the World is inherent in a visit to me, since PUTW is controlled by my daughter and son-in-law. Both excellent musicians, and we're always looking for someone new to play with. It's pretty low key here, and I think you will be very satisfied if you decide to come. Thanks, BlueJay |
Subject: RE: BS: Hey Americans! Can Marion visit you? From: kendall Date: 15 Jul 03 - 05:38 PM Now that they have mentioned it, I can highly recommend Sinsull as a place to stop over, and, Dani's place. I stayed there last spring on the way to and from Florida. We had a nice music session at Janies too. |

Subject: RE: BS: Hey Americans! Can Marion visit you? From: Marion Date: 14 Jul 03 - 12:01 AM Hello gang. My plans are coming along swimmingly. I will be PMing y'all individually to ask for phone numbers - then I will call you on the road a few weeks before I come by your towns. Fielding just gave me a little tape recorder to collect folksongs with, so can you all try to be authentic source folksingers by the time I get there? In return, I intend to leave copies of my original songs and flowcharts along the way. I've decided to start by crossing Canada then entering the states at Seattle - so my original route for crossing the states will be reverse. I'll go down to CA, go east across the south through the winter, then up the east half. Cheers, Marion |
Subject: RE: BS: Hey Americans! Can Marion visit you? From: Marion Date: 17 Jun 03 - 01:17 PM Hi JazzyJack. I will try to get to Vancouver (city), as my favourite brother is there; and a side trip to Victoria would be great too. Are you anywhere near Victoria? I like Stephen Fearing, but I don't know the other two. Marion |
Subject: RE: BS: Hey Americans! Can Marion visit you? From: Jazzyjack Date: 14 Jun 03 - 01:08 PM Dear Marion; I see that you have been a Mudcat member for some time. This is some jaunt you are planning. What guts you have. Maybe you could wind up here on Vancouver Island, a folkies's paradise. I have an apple orchard but there won't be any to pick in springtime ( and it isn't organic ). I was born in Toronto and lived there until 1978. How do you like fellow Canucks Stephen Fearing, Eileen Laverty and Todd Butler ? |
Subject: RE: BS: Hey Americans! Can Marion visit you? From: Marion Date: 12 Jun 03 - 11:51 PM Thanks BlueJay. Are you really the only Jay in town? And can I get a tour of the Pick-Up-The-World factory? Jed, you sing it, then I can segue into my new lesbian blues song. Marion |

Subject: RE: BS: Hey Americans! Can Marion visit you? From: BlueJay Date: 09 Jun 03 - 05:48 AM Wow, what a long strange trip this is looking like. If you find yourself anywhere near southern Colorado, a side trip to La Veta would be most welcome. I guarantee that you would be glad you visited us. No advance notice is needed, here. Ask the folks at the local grocery how to find Jay, and they'll help you. (living in a small town has it's advantages). Thanks, and hope to see you, BlueJay Jenkins |
Subject: RE: BS: Hey Americans! Can Marion visit you? From: open mike Date: 09 Jun 03 - 02:48 AM most rental cars require a major credit card, just so you know..and the "leave the light on for you" is something that one motel chain (motel "6"?) offers to do...they have a character named Bodine no i think it is Tom Bodette, who claims they will leave the light on... |
Subject: RE: BS: Hey Americans! Can Marion visit you? From: Marion Date: 09 Jun 03 - 02:21 AM Lyrical Lady, some friends of mine WWOOFed their way across the Canadian west, but I think they stopped when they reached the coast - I'll have to look into that. Joe, if I make it as far as California you're definitely on my list. I suspect that I may end up just staying in the eastern half of the country. I'll have to get a feel for how quickly the busking income allows me to travel, once I'm on the road. Getting a car is proving to be more complicated and expensive than I thought, so now I'm thinking that instead of driving and camping I will be taking buses and trains and sleeping in hostels (and renting cars at a few key places). I would still make a point of staying in moderate weather for busking purposes - but this would mean more cities and fewer small towns. And I'm beginning to suspect that M.Ted is right about the Springfield thing. Cheers, Marion |
Subject: RE: BS: Hey Americans! Can Marion visit you? From: greg stephens Date: 23 May 03 - 11:04 AM thanks very much, Tinker, just what I was looking for. |
Subject: RE: BS: Hey Americans! Can Marion visit you? From: Tinker Date: 23 May 03 - 09:50 AM The pesky serpent over at Contemplator tells the tale of Springfield Mountain. "The tune is based on the death of Timothy Myrick, of Springfield, Massachusetts. He was engaged to marry Sarah Blake, but was bitten by a rattlesnake on August 7, 1761 and died. The tune was originally Springfield Mountain, a somber tale that urges repentance before it is too late, to "be prepared when God doth call." The words may have first been sung to Psalm 100 (Old Hundredth). Springfield Mountain was redone for the Boston music-hall stage in the 1830's as the tune here. The sheet music was published in 1840." So, it looks like Peg in Boston is the closest to this Springfield. Tinker Whogrewuponetownover |
