Limerock- Do you play it?

Just curious... I'm learning "Limerock" on the guitar, a fiddle tune by Kenny Baker. Do any of you play it? I thought it would be technically very hard, but it isn't that bad. I find "Salty" much more difficult. Do any of you play this kind of stuff? Margo

Hum a few bars... No, actually, I don't know. :o) The Limerock I play is written by Kenny Baker, unless I'm mistaken...

You are mistaken. Limerock is not written by Kenny Baker. It is much older tune than that. It is however closely related in structure to a polka and that is the most effective and common dance done to the tune.

It's a reel, not a polka. Sounds like a distant relative of St Anne's Reel.

It also sounds helluva difficult in the Johnny Gimble version, but I'm not a fiddler.

Looking for the dots with Google, I didn't expect all that motor racing stuff. Is there a connection?

This is heard at quite a few fiddle contests and is attributed to a Texas fiddler. The version heard most frequently these days is related to an arrangement made by Benny Thomasson, a legendary Texas style fiddler who has been an influence on many younger fiddlers. A local Arkansas fiddler, Brandon Apple, does a particularly good version of this tune. Brandon has won several major fiddle contests and played for a time in Clint Black's band.

Jack - Limerock is a race track in NW Connecticut. Dick's son races there, among other sites. There is a camp nearby - Camp Isabella Friedman (no relation) that has been used for music gatherings on occasion.

Thanks for the link, Arkie. I enjoyed Benny Thomasson's version, though I quickly covered my sensitive ears at the first high E.

I agree with Darwin Long - no matter what 'legendary fiddlers' have done to it, it's a polka. I've made a MIDI of it to play on the piano, eliminating the variations I don't care for.
