My son has grown up. After strumming an acoustic guitar for four years he has persuaded me to part with £250 for an electric guitar,(yamaha pacific) + amp. He is in his bedroom now, twanging away. He is going through his familiar routine of Greensleeves etc, in a droning/rebellious type of way. Does it get any better??

I'm surprised his move from acoustic to electric guitar wasn't preceded by a shift in musical interest to a different repertoire, more rock or pop oriented.

Don't be surprised if he soon quits playing "Greensleeves" and moves on to selections that might sound more alien and less musical to your ears. You may find yourself looking back at *this* phase with nostalgia!

Maybe I'm wrong; in fact, I hope I am! Moving from acoustic to electric doesn't necessarily mean *anything.* He could be on his way to true virtuosity, exploring all aspects of his intrument. Or, maybe he just wants to be as loud and punkish as possible -- remains to be seen.

For real. I was playing rock for 7 years before I bought an electric guitar. Also, an electric guitar is not always synonymous with a heavy distortion sound.

It gets worse...bigger amps, PA of course, and effects--pedals first, then a rack mounted multiprocessor, and a compressor, too--somewhere in there a new guitar, and, most likely, rewiring that--You may be able to save your ears if you get one of those mini effects devices that you can listen to with headsets, but you'll never save any money.

Yeah, get him to listen to Hendrix,Clapton, May and Knopler. Then BB King. A hundred brilliant guitarists to listen to. But then Richard Thompson, Fairport, and thence back along the folk road.

there are a quite a few punk groups that have a large selection of traditional songs in their repertoire....i find it fascinating...and soemtimes the fusion works wonders...

Get his some Steeleye Span CDs... lots of trad stuff with way cool electric guitar there!
