Subject: Spinning Wheel in the Parlor - More?
From: Philip Hudson
Date: 08 Aug 98 - 10:40 AM

There is a verse of this song in the data base:

OLD SPINNING WHEEL

There's an old spinning wheel in the parlor
Spinning dreams of the long, long ago,
Spinning dreams of an old fashioned garden
And a maid with her old fashioned beau.
Sometimes it seems that I can hear her in the twilight
At the organ softly singing "Sweet and Low",
There's an old spinning wheel in the parlor,
Spinning dreams of the long, long ago,

this is 2nd verse, according to a man here .

There's a quaint little maid in a garden
Spinning dreams of the long long ago.
Spinning dreams of an old fashiioned garden
With a maid and her old fashioned beau.

This is what I have it was written and recorded in 1933 by Billy Hill and it goes like this:

VERSE 1: Covered with dust and forgotten
Like the face upon the wall
The one souvenir of days gone by
I treasure most of all

CHORUS: There's an old spinning wheel in the parlor
Spinning dreams of long, long ago
Spinning dreams of an old fashioned garden
And a maid with an old fashioned beau
Sometimes it seems that I can hear her in the twilight
At the organ softly singing Old Black Joe
There's an old spinning wheel in the parlor
Spinning dreams of the long, long ago

This is what I remember as a small child hearing my mom and dad sing this song.

There's an old spinning wheel in the parlor,
Spinning dreams of a long, long ago
Spinning dreams of an old fashioned garden,
And a maid with an old fashioned beau.

Chorus:

Sometimes it seems that I can hear her in the twilight,
At the organ softly playing Old Black Joe
There's an old spinning wheel in the parlor,
Spinning dreams of a long, long ago.

What Louie Roy posted is correct, almost. There's a second verse, and I'll look through my sheet music collection later for the rest.

My mom used to sing this song to me when I was little-and I have always just parts of it to my kids. So today I am sitting here thinking "what if I google "There's an old Spinning wheel in the parlor" wondering if anything would come up. SO I am totally shocked that I found the verses!!!

My mom (73) told me her dad, who is past used to sing this song to her when she was little. Does any know when the original was written.
Did anyone find the 2nd verse??

Curiously enough, the current upload of Worlds of Trad Internet radio has two versions of The Old Spinning Wheel. The first is an instrumental played by Percy Humphrey's Cresecnt City Joymakers, for the song was popular among New Orleans jazz bands. The second is an old time country music version from Riley puckett, late of the Skillet Lickers. http://www.live365.com/stations/oneworldmusic
