Subject: Heading to Toronto - Any 'Catters or music there?
From: Freso
Date: 26 May 03 - 06:39 PM

Hey all :)

Y'all's favorite MudCat Dane (unless you favour The Dane (but we all know you don't ;D)) is going on a trip to Toronto, Ontario for two weeks in a week and was wondering what kind of 'Catters he'd be able to meet, as well as if there would be any sessions or sing-alongs for him to attend and/or listen to in that while :)

I haven't gotten the address to where I will be staying, but I should be able to go in at least some hours distance from Toronto itself with my uncle, so really, any suggestions are welcome :D

The dates and times are as follows:
Arrival at Toronto (Pearson Intl.) by LH 470: 2/6 19:30 (local time)
Departure from Toronto (Pearson Intl.) by LH 471: 16/6 21:30 (local time)

Hm... can't think of anything more to add right now, but please, either reply here, send me a PM or e-mail me if you live in or 'near' Toronto and dare want to meet me, or know of sessions/sing-alongs/song-circles/etc. in or 'near' there...

Arigato in advance :D

- Freso, the (other) Dane

It took me a while to wade through the numbers and letters, but I think you're coming to Toronto in June. Welcome. There's a lot of folk stuff happening here, although some of the venues are over for the season by then, and the outdoor folk festivals mostly don't start until July. Will you be downtown or in the burbs?

Residing in the burbs but being all over the place ;)

However, festivals and concerts generally cost money (afaik :P), and I just wasted quite a bit on the trip, so... more music for less money would be great :)

Freso, maybe we could hook up at the Corner Coffeehouse in Newmarket, not far north of Toronto. They have events on a weekly basis. PM me after you arrive, and we'll see what can be arranged.

Jimmy: Hm... perhaps I should contact Rick Fielding by PM and ask him?

Little Hawk: I'll do that :)

Well, you will be here from June 2 until the 16th. Let's see.

June 7-8, Muhtadi International Drum Festival in Queen's Park. Not exactly folkie but definately 'world music'. See here for more information. It's a free event.

June 14th, There's a free folk festival in Brampton which is less than an hour's drive from just about anywhere in Toronto. Here's a link.

There will be Toronto Song Circle evenings on the 6th and 13th. email me at ynot@globalserve.net and I'll give you details.

There's the usual good line up at Hugh's Room and John Renbourn will be at The Flying Cloud Folk Club on the 8th.

Alan Rhody is appearing at the Acoustic Harvest stage on June 7th.

I'm sure there's more and the other Toronto 'catters will fill you in.

Oh right. I forgot about the Renbourn! It's after the regular Flying Cloud season is over.

I haven't been in Toronto in years but there is a pub called the Bow & Arrow that you may want to check out. I don't have the address.

If you 're going to be around on the week-end June 14 & 15 th. there's a small Festival just outside Paris,Ontario.
It's part of the Paris Plains Concert series.Last year they had Finest Kind (Ian Robb) Nancy Kerr/james Fagan,Guy Davis. So far this year Tracy Swartz/Ginny Hawker,Jim Payne/Fergus O'byrne to come.
The week end is very small (less than 100 people ) and VERY lovely.Always some singing

Paris is about an hour from Toronto.

Hi Freso, sorry I didn't see this before. I live in Toronto. As for free music events, the best place is probably Tranzac, which has different participatory events on various days. The Flying Cloud series mentioned above takes place at the Tranzac. It's downtown; the closest major intersection is Bloor and Spadina.

What do you play, and what do you like to listen to?

I often go to a country/old-time jam Saturday afternoons (in the east end), and sometimes to Monday evening Celtic session at the Tranzac. I live in eastern Toronto, in the neighbourhood called "the Danforth".

I will PM you my number. I'd be happy to meet you.

Marion

Wow... alot of posts to this thread suddenly! Can't say I complay though ;)

Marion: I sing (and try to play the bones, but, eh :P), and primarily Irish and Scottish folk/traditional music, however English and Danish folk/traditional isn't completely out of the mix ;)

Hm... I'll look at the various sites and such that have been posted and returns with a more complete reply... nice to see so many quick replies :D
