Subject: BS: Help, work with Deaf in North UK From: rock chick Date: 30 May 03 - 07:00 AM As some of you may know, I am looking to move to the North of England, Yorkshire if possible,to be with my new partner and need to find myself a half decent job up there. I love my current work making assesments of the needs of deaf people in their place of employment, extra equipement, translation services etc,(Access to Work) but the company that I freelance for only work from Oxfordshire down to the South coast. I know this is not a usual Mudcat request but I know there are Catters who work in simmilar and related fields so if anyone has a contact or suggestion I could follow up then please PM me. I am a competent BSL signer, have done some interpreting work and organised support work with deaf students in Higher Education. If anyone has any (polite *grin*) suggestions they would be greatfully recieved. |

Subject: RE: BS: Help, work with Deaf in North UK From: GUEST,Lidy Date: 30 May 03 - 08:00 AM Rock Chick, You probably know about this already, but the RAD have a jobs page (see link). It may also be worth looking into universities and colleges- particularly at the moment, they're trying really hard to boost their inclusive capacities and may well be interested in a BSL interpreter; you may even be able to do a bit of job creation and could get yourself into an assessment position with regards to learning needs/classroom equipment which would help deaf students? Subject: RE: BS: Help, work with Deaf in North UK From: Red and White Rabbit Date: 30 May 03 - 10:17 AM rock chick I agree with the other two - once you know your area get in touch with social services and the uni's there was a big thing in the Teimes ed last week about unis and colleges struggling to meet the needs of the deaf - also if you are ever in W. Yorks I am always looking for someone to interpret for me and can never get anyone - usual thing people organise things and forget that we have to book interpreters three months in advance! good luck sue |

Subject: RE: BS: Help, work with Deaf in North UK From: rock chick Date: 30 May 03 - 01:28 PM Thanks for help and advice everyone. Morticia anywhere within a reasonable distance of Hull, say 100 miles any direction one way. Happy to sign for anyone within same distance, thought I may start my own Interpreting/ Assessment company, I freelance now for the Employment Services, unfortunately from midlands upwards they use their Disabilities Employment Officers (DEA) to do assessment work, which puts me out of the frame so to speak, although it could well change in the future (hope so) The distance between my partner and I (248)miles each way, makes it expensive for both of us (though we both know its worth it) |

Subject: RE: BS: Help, work with Deaf in North UK From: Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull Date: 31 May 03 - 11:48 AM The code for Hull is 01482, the other number is the council main switchboard. My cousin is a manager at social sercices, i will ask him for numbers next time I see him. Also try East Riding Social Services, they cover the towns and villages around Hul, including Hessle, Cottingham etc. Humberside Police have a register of translators, that they use for translating for deaf suspects, and victims of crime. Hull Deaf Club is also a good contact, I am going to work in 5 minutes, but will tryto post a few numbers when i get home.john |

Subject: RE: BS: Help, work with Deaf in North UK From: rock chick Date: 31 May 03 - 01:04 PM I interpret for the deaf, but I only have the level two, although I have been signing for around 7 years and have a great deal of experience, only reason didn't take next level was that they require you to be working at least 21 hours per week with the deaf and I was doing my teaching course at the time to enable me to teach deaf students, post 16. The law requires a much higher level, but look forward to receiving any helpful info Thanks girls and guys |

Subject: RE: BS: Help, work with Deaf in North UK From: Gillie Date: 11 Jun 03 - 07:59 PM Hi Rock Chick, It's a difficult and complex area to get into. Suggestions might be to as said already, to get in touch with social service. Failing that get a teaching diploma as a registered classroom assistant for learning disabilities. I'm sure that there would be a few placements, as there is not that much calling for signers. Something else to consider would be working in the media i.e television as a newscast signer. Now there would be an accomplishment!!! Gille |
