I know that many of you have met Allan C. as he and Bill Sables are our most travelled 'Catters. We all remember the Great Mudcat Adventure quite well. Allan has also been a regular Getaway attendee as well.

In the 5 years I have known Allan on the 'Cat and from what everyone else has often said of him, I felt I knew him pretty well.....and I was right. A kind and wonderful gentle soul and a true gentleman. Intelligent, articulate, humorous, thoughtful.......all the things I assumed he would be, he was when he stopped by my home for an all too brief visit last week. There is always the feeling of friends unmet when I have met other 'Catters and it was the same with Allan. Although I was unable to make contact during Allan and Bill's Adventure, it remains one of my high points on the 'Cat as I rode along vicariously. That feeling has been refreshed as I have now met both Allan and Bill in 3D and also Allan was thoughtful enough to bring along the infamous "Mudcat Guitar" that was signed by so many during their trip. Happily my name is now on it as well.

I figured Allan to arrive around noon but he was early and I hadn't even had time for a shower....actually I had time, but I'm just lazy. So if my initial hug was a little tentative, I figured who the hell would want to get close to someone who looked and smelled like I did!!! Anyway, he was a blg hit with Michael and Tristan and also a huge hit with Sissy and Jaeger, both dogs greeting him for a long time with their worst manners, generally reserved for folks they really like. I was so happy it was a time when Karen was home and awake (working nights means a weird schedule at times) and also that Wayne was able to come down for the day as well. Wayne and Connie hosted Bill, Sam, and Ian for us as I had to go into the hospital the next day for surgery, so Wayne too has gotten to meet both Bill and Allan. Connie had to stay home and hold their eldest son's nose to the grindstone to finish his end of year schoolwork. In any case, Wayne came away with the same great feelings as Karen and I.

Allan my friend, you are a gem and a treasure and we all thank you!!! Sissy sends additional tongue lappings and leaps and bounces as well. It was great having you here!

Spaw

Allan stopped by NC on his way (?) and I saw the guitar. I got to touch your signature on the guitar, 'Spaw! It was ALMOST like meeting you in person.

You are right. He is a sweet gem of a guy, and a real treasure to this community.

Allan was the first Mudcatter I ever met in 3D. He and his friend David met me at the Waffle House in Winchester Virginia for lunch back in Nov of 2000. I was so inspired by the experience, I wrote my first ever song about it. He sure does get around ;-)

Well, this thread goes into the TRACE file for sure! Anytime I get to feeling low, I will come back and read the lovely things that have been said here and will most certainly be uplifted.

It has always been a privilege and a pleasure to meet every one of the somewhere-near-two-hundred 'Catters I have encountered. Those I have met or revisited in the past month or so were such a treat. For those of you who don't know, I have traveled some 10,000 miles in recent weeks, driving more than 3,000 of it myself and meeting 'Catters all along the way. I was fortunate enough to be able to visit England in time to attend the Yorkshire gathering. I was also blessed with an opportunity to visit Ireland. In both cases, I was blessed with the presence of our own dear Morticia who was only too happy to serve as guide.

Meeting the bunch at Yorkshire was a thrill I am sure to never forget. And after a few pints, I was singing along with songs I had never ever heard before! As always, it was a joy to finally put faces with the many names I had come to know on the Mudcat. I won't even try to list the names of the many I met and spoke with. However, I must tell you all that it was a distinct pleasure to be invited to tea at Selby's home and to meet his wife and family. It was also a special treat to have the chance to spend a couple of nights under the roof of Bill Sables and his lovely Lorna. I have wanted to do that for a long, long time.

I was only able to visit Ireland for three days and although I didn't encounter any 'Catters there, I had the time of my life! Due to a small mix-up at the car hire, Morticia was unable to be authorized to drive the car. This left me behind the wheel on the "wrong" side of the car and on the "wrong" side of the road, driving in downtown Dublin (and later on the roadways of southeast Ireland.) There is more to this tale, but suffice it to say that I hope that guy on the motorcycle wasn't as frightened as Morty was. I should tell you that Morty and I spent an evening at the Brazen Head where Morticia received a standing ovation for having sung a couple of songs so beautifully. The rest of the visit was spent motoring down to Wexford and back to Dublin by way of Kilkenny. We had many fabulous adventures along the way and ate like royalty!

There is no way to convey how much I enjoyed my two week visit to England and Ireland except to say that all there should be forewarned that I will return as soon as it is at all possible and next time you won't get rid of me so quickly!

Almost as soon as I got off the plane back in the States, I left for the West, stopping in Montana to say a "howdy" to Mudcatter, Alice. It was on the way back from there that I zipped past Sorcha's bailiwick and phoned her. I also kept in contact with kat who was nice enough to keep track of my whereabouts during my trek so that someone might know where to look for the body should something go amiss. (Nothing did, I am happy to say!) Thank you kat! SINSULL was along for a portion of the ride by phone as well.

2,430 miles after I left Alice's home in Montana, I arrived at my own in Virginia. However, the last leg of the journey led me to 'Spaw's door. I have been wanting to meet this man since his first posts on the 'Cat. I was quite nearly heartbroken that the route Bill and I needed to take during the Adventure was too distant from Ohio to include seeing 'Spaw. But now, as he says, both Bill and I have finally met him.

I suppose I could say that 'Spaw was no surprise as well and in many ways that is quite true. Some of the few other 'Catters who have met him and others who have come to know him by way of regular phone calls, etc., had let me know a bit more about him than can be found in his posts. It was a pleasure to meet Karen and Michael and Tristan as well as the increasingly famous Wayne. Let me summarize my feeling about the visit by saying that he and I talked with one another, almost non-stop, for almost six hours and probably could have gone on for quite a few more except that I had to leave. There aren't many people I would find that interesting.

I spent a night or two at home in Virginia before hitting the road again to travel to North Carolina. I was on a mission. It seems that sometime after I headed for England my good friend and 'Catter, BarbaraLynn had sent word to Bill Sables that she wanted me to bring back a stone or two from a small town near Selby where her family roots had once been. Bill immediately contacted Raggytash who lives in the town in question. Raggytash not only gathered a few stones but also assembled a variety of informative publishings about the place which he included in a bag which eventually got to me at the Yorkshire gathering. My mission now was to deliver this bag of goodies to BarbaraLynn. I am happy to report that the goods have been delivered and BarbaraLynn was totally thrilled to receive the bounty.

Because BarbaraLynn lives not very far from where the 'Cat's own Dani has her restaurant and where 'Catter, Janie lives, it only seemed right that I should drop by to see them as well. It was fabulous to see them both again and especially nice to discover that Dani's restaurant was doing so very well. Dani was pleased to tell me that Judy Cook has been booked to perform there in August. I very much hope to be able to attend.

I am now finally back at home and have had to put an end to my wandering for a while so I can earn enough money for the next time. Once again, it was a tremendous pleasure to visit with so many of the wonderful 'Catters who make up this great community of ours. I sincerely hope more of you will make the effort to get to do something of the sort someday soon. It is such fun!!

Oh Allan, we all love you so much. Next spring, drive out and pick me up so we can go to the East Coast to catch the plane for Yorkshire/Beltain. I want to stay at least 3 weeks. If I can get to the East Coast it will only be about $$250 round trip. If I have to fly from Denver it will be over $2,000.

Allan it was a pleasure to see you in Yorkshire - maybe you'll visit again soon? *BG*

Rest assured, when you do return to England, you have a little (harem? Posse?) group of female followers who will give you a warm, soft place to sleep any time you want!

I must admit, I WAS surprised - I wasn't expecting him to be half so cute, nor so funny. Talented I knew about.

When next you visit these shores.....

So Sins, what are you anyway? Some sort of Munchhausen matchmaker? Anyway, I'm glad this one is out now and I'd add that I can't think of two better people for something good to happen for!!! And Morti........Perhaps there are a few things you need to know so come over here and sit on Uncle Spaw's lap.......Uncle Spaw show you a trick.

I meant to add this before. When Allan was here he said his favorite story I ever told on the 'Cat was this true one that follows. To make it easier for him to find, here it is again:

We stop at Ponderosa for supper. I asked the teenage girl behind the counter for some cream for my coffee. This turned out to be a stupid question. I had looked in the stainless bin thingy and all there was left was the ice to cool the little creamer containers. She stared down at the empty bin like it had just been deposited there by aliens. Since she wasn't moving, I thought I should elaborate.....a real mistake.

I said, "You know, that bin there with the ice.....It holds the milk.......The ice keeps it cool.........It's empty....." She stares at me as though I am the alien and still doesn't move. Okay, I keep trying. "You know, cream? Milk? To put in my coffee. The milk goes in the bin there and I get some to put into my coffee???" Suddenly it seems to dawn on her and she says she'll be right back. I turned to Karen, who's a bit incredulous herself, and I make disparaging comments about the girl.

Karen is chastising me for being a curmudgeon when Miss Ditz returns with an open pint of milk. I'm thinking, "Okay, so they're out of creamer," and reach to take it from her when...........have you got it figured out?................yeah, that's right,....she pours the carton of milk into the bin with the half-melted ice! There is a 2 second pause before Karen and I look at each other and then are convulsed in laughter. It's so bad that it takes a minute or so for me to say, "Can I see the manager for a minute?" Manager arrives and I, choking with laughter, try my best to tell the tale. He finally looks down and sees the bin, full of watery, icey, milk and stares at Miss Ditz..........Then back at the bin........Then again at Miss Ditz.........Then back at the bin.........And after his own "pregnant pause," starts laughing himself. Nice fella'.......gave us a 25% discount saying the laugh was worth it.

Spaw

Have had a few days to recover from the shock and now a few questions. Does this mean that Terri will be at the Getaway every year or that Allan will not? If Kendall is invited, will there be a military wedding this time? Or just a brawl? Where do we meet to practice "I Love You Truly" with our best vibratto? Will there be a Jell-o Pit at the reception? Will Micca officiate? He has a license, right? And if he does, who will give the bride away? Doesn't sound like Kendall can be trusted to hand over the goods. Will Liz fight Phoebe for the role of Flower Girl? Can Dick Greenhouse sing "Another Unfortunate Wedding" while I croon "Those Wedding Bells Must Not Ring Out"? Have you recognized the folly of your announcement and decided on an elopement? In which case "James, Hold The Ladder Steady" is in order.

aND i AM JUST GETTING STARTED!!!! dAMN cAPSLOCK!

Just for you, Tinker:

James, Hold the Ladder Steady
Words and Music by John D. Loudermilk

James, James hold the ladder steady
James, James I'm packed tonight I'm ready
James, James hold the ladder steady
I'm a'comin' down to your ar-ar-ar-rms
I'm a'comin' down to your arms.
Now James and I we went to mama and showed her my diamond ring
She said "my poor little baby, you must be crazy, to think of such a
thing"
So James, James hold the ladder steady
James, James I'm packed tonight I'm ready
James, James hold the ladder steady
I'm a'comin' down to your ar-ar-ar-rms
I'm a'comin' down to your arms.
Now James and I we went to daddy and said that we want to be wed
Daddy said "nope, you'll just have to elope" and laughed as he went to
bed
But James, James hold the ladder steady
James, James I'm packed tonight I'm ready
James, James hold the ladder steady
I'm a'comin' down to your ar-ar-ar-rms
I'm a'comin' down to your arms.
I'd hate to see 'em in the morning when they both completely flip
He'll be sayin' "they cain't", she'll be feeling faint
And I'll be kissing my husband's lips
So James, James hold the ladder steady
James, James I'm packed tonight I'm ready
James, James hold the ladder steady
I'm a'comin' down to your ar-ar-ar-rms
I'm a'comin' down to your arms.
FADE
James, James hold the ladder steady
James, James I'm packed tonight I'm ready
James, James hold the ladder steady

Allan, it's perfect for the repetiore of the "Choco Woman's Choir" picture them performing in matching eclessiastical purple. The Chocolate song, 16 Stone.... Truely a memorable event...For a formal occaision such as this do the jeans need to be replaced with purple leggings???

Ahem...I've said, privately, that I think they need to do this mid-pond on a ship of some sort, to be fair to both sides. I mean it would seem natural to do it at the Getaway or up in Yorkshire or something like that, BUT the middle of the pond, like they did when connecting the telegraph lines under water seems more fair to all who would want to attend.

We could have a fiesta with synchronised swimmers, as well as some of the Lord of the Dance performers, I see Shatner is doing that is some ad, now, maybe Little Hawk could get him, and let's see we'll get kilts for all of the gents and some pipes and swords so we can have a sword dance and get a morris side, too, plus Micca can bring a giant, then from across here, we'll have Kendall, Charley and others doing s/chanteys, as well as some blues by Max, DW, bet and I will do some cowboy and Sorcha can fiddle up a storm, Big Mick can play his low D, everyone one else can join in or take a turn...it'll be a giant extravaganza and we'll get BBC/PBS to follow around and do a documentary and Mudcat will go on and on, forever and ever with nary a care for funding, in fact there will be an endowment for a small Mudcat University and Retirement Community and it will say over the doorway, "Brought to you by Terri and Allan's wedding extravaganza - get your copy on dvd, today!"

Jeez! No need to feed these imaginations. They are so full, they fairly spew!

Terri and I are discussing the possible launch of a hot-air balloon so that we can put all of this into some sort of perspective. Perhaps we would be well advised to stay up there until the dust clears or until we run out of proper ale - whichever comes first.

(in a very small, meek voice).....Erm, do we get any say in this wedding or shall we just turn up when we are told to?

You can only fit so much proper ale into a hot air balloon....

Terri and Allan, my dad had four daughters. He always said he couldn't afford four weddings; when we got ready to tie the knot, he would give us each $100 and a ladder to elope. I am sure if I told him of your plight, he'd do the same for you now.**bg**
