Subject: Obit: David Brinkley From: kendall Date: 12 Jun 03 - 12:10 PM I'm saddened to learn of the passing of David Brinkley. I started watching TV news in the 50's, and he with his partner, Chet Huntley were my favorites. They gave us the news, not entertainment, but, Brinkley would, sometimes, give us a bit of his dry wit. They don't make them like him anymore. |

Subject: RE: Obit: David Brinkley From: katlaughing Date: 12 Jun 03 - 04:07 PM Terri Gross replayed an 80's interview of him on "Fresh Air" today on NPR. It was wonderful to hear his voice and his take on things, again. He spoke a lot about the very early days of live broadcast news. When he first worked for NBC, no one was actually assigned to the White House because they were used to all of the news going out overnight to the newspapers. None of the live stuff. Then, along came NBC and him and everything they did was live! What a time! Rest well, kind sir, you've earned it. And, thank you, kat |

Subject: RE: Obit: David Brinkley From: Stilly River Sage Date: 13 Jun 03 - 12:52 AM My mother read a biography by Sam Donaldson quite a number of years ago, and I remember her telling me about an incident in there that she particularly liked. If I remember it correctly, when Brinkley had children at home apparently other young reporters would babysit for him. Sam Donaldson and others had a running poker game that would sometimes happen at Brinkley's house as they "watched" the children. I haven't read the book, I'm only dimly recalling Mom's telling of the episode. But Donaldson was apparently quite a fan of Brinkley's. SRS |
